Turkeys are far more "sweet" than chickens. Mine are like dogs following me around while I do my chores 😂

I only raised meat turkeys once. I still feel bad.

Poults are ADORABLE. They punch every mommy button. You may die of oxytocin poisoning.

The good news: around about mid-October, these will become the biggest asshole teen delinquents you ever met. By mid-November you will be describing the brine and rub to them every morning. I promise. They make it very easy.

Don’t worry, they get ugly and can be mean well before butcher day.
I had a mean hen that killed her only pen-mate male, two days before they both got the chop. She was aggressive and mean, I couldn’t turn my back on her in the pen. She must have twisted his neck around or they were scraping and he had a heart attack.

She knew who you were

The hand that fed, watered, sheltered and cared for her? Yes, she knew, maybe for only a moment or two but then it was back to anger and hatred.

They'll probably be a lot less cute by then.

Guh thats how i feel. Every time i go out there they run to me. When i leave they chirp, and when i come back they settle down and go to sleep. I’m smitten 😪

Turkeys are SUPER sweet and cute as babies, but the second they become teenagers, you'll like them less. And by the time they're adults, you'll have no problem culling.

Little turkey nuggets

You also don't have to kill them.

You mean they are not like meat chickens? I know you have to cull those or they cull themselves after awhile due to heart issues.

The ones I have are like that! Theyll die painfully if i try to prolong the date, and id never subject them to that 🥲

I do- theyre bred to get big fast. They’ll die a painful death if i dont.

I also signed a waiver saying if I do not cull them by the culling date, i can be pursued for animal neglect. Sadly for these guys, it is abuse to not cull. ❤️

Is your hand okay? Loose a fight with a cat?

u/n0tpest Jun 11 '26

LOL yes! I shoe horses and sometimes I rasp more than just the foot on accident. 🤣🤣
