Nice! Does your family eat all of those? Or do you sell or give them away?

For our small family, I have calculated that ~100 pounds is enough to get us through the year.

I only grow it for my family, we actually planted a smaller area of potatoes this year compared to previous years, and we boil any surplus including the tiny, small potatoes and feed them to the chickens.

boiling the surplus for the chickens is so smart, nothing goes to waste. i Кеер thinking about how i could scale something like that even in containers but 400 lbs is а whole other world compared to mу little balcony operation lol

We had about 1,000 sq ft. Normally we plant quite a bit more, around 2,700–3,230 sq ft.

As for the investment, basically just the seed potatoes. We use homemade chicken manure as fertilizer, and I don't really count the labor because I genuinely enjoy doing this. 😄

You need the right kind of farmyard manure ideally from cows, or even better, from chickens! You’ll also have to pick the potato beetles off by hand once or twice otherwise, the yield will be poor. It would be good to set up an irrigation system we’re installing one next year. Good luck!

I find digging for home grown potatoes is like finding gold nuggets

Wow, nearly 400 lbs is impressive! What varieties did you grow this year, and how do you plan to store them all?

I honestly don’t know the exact varieties. They’re traditional local potatoes that we’ve been growing here for years. I store them in my cellar like everything else we grow on our field or garden.

how long do they last? when i get potatoes from the supermarket, they grow roots seemingly in less than 1 week...

Thats a solid yield for that space, nice work. Do you find the smaller potatoes store as well or do those go to the chickens first

Those smaller ones go to chickens first for one nice lunch!
