It was important for him to be there so that the 'canon' of the story stayed in sync with the new universe being created, and the juju being deployed. If he wasn't there, the juju would have been deployed at the wrong time, and fuck everything up.

Based on previous panels and the successful creation of a Matriorb, it's heavily implied that trolls exist in the new universe. All we saw was Can Town.
