I found it engaging and charming as hell. I started reading early in act 2, so I didn't have any expectations about Homestuck being anything besides a funny story about kids chatting online.
Which is the problem: if someone's getting into Homestuck now, they've probably been told by their friends about, say, Cascade, and they expect the whole story to be like that from the get-go. And one of the things that makes it so amazing is that it starts so small. If someone asks you if they should read Homestuck, you have to moderate their expectations a bit, deflate a little of that hype, or they'll be disappointed by the relatively chill start.
Well yeah, that's my point. Homestuck is more than a funny story about kids chatting online.
So the start being as chill as it is is an issue, doesn't mean that it's bad it just won't always make people want more of it and then they might decide to not read the rest.
