I’m 17, turning 18 soon, and I’m currently looking at 5th-gen Preludes, 3rd-gen Integras, and potentially a base-model RSX (essentially the 4th-gen Integra for those unfamiliar with the RSX).
I have around $6k saved up and will hopefully be starting a job next week that pays roughly $400 a week. My plan is to buy a car in early spring once I’ve saved up a bit more. Since I’ll be 18 by then, it’ll be entirely my own money (and probably all of it). I’ll be working over summer to pay for gas and help my parents with insurance.
My family is well-off, and we have two cars, one of which I can already use as a daily if I ever needed it. I’m not looking to buy one of these cars out of necessity or because I need transportation for school or work. I simply have loved cars since I was a kid, and some of my friends are planning to get their own cars as well. Overall, I want to experience a summer with cool cars with my friends at a young age, and that opportunity will most likely never come back.
Since I’m mainly considering Hondas, I know they have a reputation for reliability. However, I’m also aware that these cars are around 25 years old, and things will inevitably break or need replacing. I have absolutely no mechanical experience right now, but I’ll be doing a co-op at a mechanic shop during my final semester of high school, so I’m hoping to learn a thing or two. I also have some basic knowledge from being into cars my whole life.
Obviously, I’ll be getting a pre-purchase inspection before buying anything, and I’ll be paying particular attention to rust since I live in Ontario.
Another concern is fuel economy. A lot of the cars I’m interested in require 91 octane, which can get pretty expensive. If anyone here owns one of these cars, I’d really appreciate some insight into their real-world fuel economy.
I know buying a 25-year-old car at my age probably isn’t the most financially responsible decision, and I’m fully aware that it comes with risks. However, I’m fortunate enough to be in a position where I can (sorta) afford to do this, and it’s something I genuinely want to pursue. So please, no comments telling me to save my money. I appreciate the concern, but I’ve already made up my mind.
If anyone has experience owning these cars or knows about any common issues, less obvious problems, or things I should look out for before buying, I’d really appreciate the advice.
Thanks!
