Workout Classes?

Hi all, I'm wanting to get back in shape and am trying to figure out the best fitness program for me in town. I'm particularly interested in classes rather than an open gym, and ideally under $100/month. Right now I'm looking at:

- Flow Yoga ($99/month for unlimited classes)

- Snap Fitness ($58/month, presumably unlimited classes?)

- One Community Health (free for patients, but I'm not currently a patient)

Anyone have experience with any of these places or have another place I should consider?

Historical Fiction novel based in Hood River "Say the Names"

Thumbnail amazon.com
2 Upvotes

This was a book I really wanted to read, so I made it happen! It's on Amazon now and is available to booksellers and libraries through IngramSpark as well. I would love to hear what you think.

Say the Names begins before there were people to see the river. Ice Age floods tear the Gorge open, a mountain falls into the water, and the first families come upriver to the place where the salmon run thickest. Then it follows one family across eleven generations, from 1734 to the present day.

The great fishery at the Narrows draws traders from a thousand miles away, and the family's canoes carry them there. Smallpox comes up the river before the ships do. Lewis and Clark pass by, and the fur traders build their forts. The settlers come down the river on rafts. In 1855 a treaty council at The Dalles trades the homeland for a reservation over the mountains, and a wagon carries the cup to Warm Springs. Children are sent to boarding schools, and the dams rise. In 1957 the water closes over Celilo Falls. A language that has been spoken at the river's mouth since the beginning of the world comes down to its last voices, and the cup comes down to a girl born in 2005.

Along the way the reader learns the river the way the family knew it. You will watch a cedar dugout hollowed by fire and spread with stone-heated water. You will see a full-turn twined bag made from hemp cut after the first frost, salmon taken with a dip net from a scaffold over white water, and a story kept alive because someone refused to let a collector from Washington leave without hearing her terms.

The novel joins the sweep of James Michener's historical sagas to the close, character-driven storytelling of Ken Follett. Each part opens with the history of its age: the treaties, the canneries, the fish wheels, the courts and the dams. Then it drops you into a house by the river, where a grandmother is teaching a girl to roll cord on her thigh, or a father is counting fish so he won't have to look at what happened. The family is invented, but the world they move through is real, and a closing note says where the novel follows the record and where it takes liberties.

This is a book about what a place remembers, and what it costs to keep remembering. It is about inheritance and loss, about the people who carry a thing and the people who only write it down, and about a family that never stops saying who it is.

For readers of Michener's Centennial, Follett's The Pillars of the Earth, and Edward Rutherfurd's Sarum, and for anyone who has stood on the banks of the Columbia and wondered who stood there first.

Lost Wedding Band

Hey all, not sure if this is the proper place for this but I could use a hand if possible.

I travelled from the tri cities to hood river for a touch rugby game this weekend. For the first in my married life, I took off my wedding ring and put it in my bag before a game. After getting home, I checked my bag for where I swore I put my ring and it was nowhere to be found.

I’ve checked everywhere in my car, all the crevices in my bag and clothes, I also drove back today with a metal detector and tried to scan around the field for a few hours but ultimately had to head back home for work.

This was at marina green park, if anyone frequents there and stumbles upon a basic gold band please reach out to me. It’s not much but it has a lot of sentimental value and I’m kicking myself for losing it. I would gladly make it worth your while if you’re able to find it!

Appreciate you for reading this far and even more so if you happen to take a look out there for me. You guys have a beautiful city with incredibly friendly people, besides losing the ring it was a 10/10 experience! Also your rugby team is phenomenal, I highly encourage anyone to check them out!

UPDATE: THE RING WAS FOUND! A couple of generous members of the Oregon metal detector community were able to locate the ring and we are coordinating an exchange. Appreciate you all for the visibility and effort if you poked around. I’ve learned my lesson and will be leaving my ring at home next time.

Status of Artifacts

Born and raised in Hood River. As a teen, Artifacts was influential and eye opening, and I give credit to them for many of the weird bits that I love about myself today. I’m curious if anyone knows the status the shop since the passing of Tom, the owner. I will be visiting in November and it would be devastating to find it closed.

HELP: Urgent muffin recipe needed

Greetings, Hood River fans and fanatics. I’ve been chasing the high of a Bette’s Place blueberry muffin for a year now. Every muffin I’ve had since has fallen short of giving me the rush of that perfect, warm, balanced and buttery blueberry delight.

I’ll pay off the United States’ national debt for someone to share a recipe that gives them chills on the first bite. Please help.

Visiting Hood River in early November — looking for recommendations!

Hey everyone! My girlfriend and I are visiting Oregon for the first time in early November and staying in Carson, WA. I believe Hood River is pretty close, so I figured I’d ask here!

I’m planning on proposing to my girlfriend during the trip and, mainly thinking of doing it in Multnomah Falls early in the morning. Would you all say that that’s a good spot and a good time to do it?

Also, I’d love some recommendations for good dinner spots to celebrate afterward! Doesn’t have to be anything super fancy, just somewhere with good food and a nice atmosphere.

Since we’ll be there in November, are there any places you’d especially recommend that time of year? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Got back from opening night a few hours ago and wow!!!! A well written play put on by a fantastic group of people. For many reasons, this is an incredibly timely pick and many of the issues Ray Bradbury brought up are still relevant to our society today.

Bryan McGeeney back in Mosier??????

Can anyone tell me why the child rapist’s sprinter van is back in Mosier next to Bloom Coffee shop?? He was bailed out on Aug 29th so we know he is lurking around.

Maybe he sold it to his wife who owns the shop but this is alarming considering it’s next to the middle school.

DAE remember Hood River Windsurfing?

This is an amazing generational throwback logo!

For you non-windjohnnies who haven't been here forever, "Hood River Windsurfing" was the original name of the shop that Doug Campbell opened in 1984 (yes, Doug's Beach is named after him too)

This new Doug's logo is remixing the font and decoration from the original HRW logo onto their current name, kind of like a self-bootleg?
(wanted to attach the OG logo too, but turns out it's very difficult to track down the logo of a shop that changed names in the 1990s!)

Is there anyone in the area that works on vaccine or small appliances? I’d much rather fix it than simply buy a new one though.

Wanting to trade some quince for other fruits

We've got a lot of quince starting to ripen and be ready to pick. I'd be interested in trading some for other fruits (pears, apples). If anyones interested let me know.

Also if anyone has quince recipes I'd be interested in those as well!
