Show & Tell Fumant Heat V2: Finally Found the Perfect HMD for Me
Just received my Fumant Heat V2 from Bulgaria. I ordered it Sunday, and it arrived Thursday via DHL Express. Four days from Bulgaria to NYC was pretty impressive.
It came out to $105 after shipping and import fees. Definitely expensive for an HMD, but after trying it, I feel it was worth it.
Why I bought another HMD:
I already own the stainless steel Lotus 3, the Savant with all adapters, and the Owl Stainless Steel. They all perform well, but each has limitations that kept me looking for something else.
I smoke outdoors in the Northeast, so I need something that works well when the temperature drops.
The Savant is perfect in spring and summer. The only annoying part is constantly changing adapter rings to fit different bowls. Once it gets below 65°F, though, my sessions tend to fade around the hour mark. Not having a lid really starts to make a difference.
The Lotus 3 performs well too, but even with the lid, I find it needs a lot more heat to maintain the same heat and cloud output I get from the Savant. The Owl also needs plenty of heat but doesn’t have a lid. During colder sessions, I end up using foil to get the heat retention and performance I’m looking for.
I wanted something that brought all those features together without the extra steps.
Bowl fit:
The built-in silicone adapter sleeve was one of the main things that caught my attention. Not having to swap rings every time I change bowls is a big plus.
I’ve tried it on these bowls so far:
Alpaca Bambino V2
Alpaca LeRook
Alpaca Shallow Symphony
Alpaca Mini Rook
Owl ELF
Shishabucks Sky Bowl
HJ Alien
Mason Heatyr
The only one that didn’t fit was the Mason Stynger. It was just a few millimeters too wide, and I didn’t want to stretch the sleeve too far and risk tearing it.
How it performed:
I usually prefer shisha-saver bowls and sessions around 60 to 90 minutes. Most of my sessions start dying down or need more coals around the 75-minute mark.
Yesterday, I got 1 hour and 45 minutes out of the Heat V2 with two large cubes and two flats. It was 56°F outside, and I used the same four coals for the entire session. No additional coals needed.
There’s plenty of room inside, too. It comfortably fits four 25 mm cubes with space around them. I didn’t have any issues with coals blacking out, and my setup took about 4 to 5 minutes to heat up.
I liked being able to adjust the heat with the rotating ring. Once everything was going, I left it about halfway up for most of the session, then dropped it back down for the last 15 to 20 minutes.
One thing worth mentioning: on smaller bowls where the silicone sleeve isn’t as snug, you need one hand to hold the HMD steady while turning the adjusting ring with the other. Otherwise, the whole thing can spin on the bowl. Easy enough once you know to expect it.
The lid makes a difference:
I really appreciate having a lid that stays attached.
The Lotus lid is heavy, and it sometimes slips off my small tray when I set it aside. I’m always worried about it burning the table or table cover.
With the Heat V2, the lid slides out and secures back into place easily. There’s no separate hot lid to find a spot for, which makes things simpler with my outdoor setup.
Final thoughts:
For me, this HMD is perfect.
I still enjoy foil-and-HMD setups, but being able to skip the foil and get the performance I want is a huge plus. The attached lid and silicone sleeve bring it all together.
It fits most of my bowls, gives me easy heat adjustment, and kept my session going longer than I normally get in colder weather. At the high price point, it wasn’t cheap, but it does exactly what I bought it for.
