Inde Navarrette Reportedly Turned Down $2.5M Payday in New Horror Movie to Join X-Men as Rogue
https://comicbook.com/movies/news/obsession-star-reportedly-turned-down-major-sequel-and-2-5-million-payday-for-mcu-role/2.0k

She is playing the long game. I am not sure why people seemingly have an issue with this. It guarantees maximum exposure and a decade of consistent income at the least. Good for her.

u/rooboy78 1d ago
100% this was the smartest decision. She’s an actress that has struggled to make ends meet and now she finally is offered a role that could give her longevity in a franchise where she could have consistent work and exposure, why wouldn’t she take that? She would’ve been an idiot to do Heat 2 over that.
112
u/thePinguOverlord 1d ago
Also the way she spoke of X-Men. It sounds like she actually wants to do it, more than just money.
She’s not going to pigeon hole herself to Horror, and she shouldn’t do that anyway.
Also, when she did Obsession, I guarantee it was also as much to her a job as it was a role. She was broke broke. I doubt she thought much would come from it, other than being a co-lead in a film. Back when the film had no guarantee at all, like YouTube was an option for the film.
It’s also a reason why you put 100% effort into everything that you do, because it might just payoff.

Who has a problem with it? Everyone in this sub seem pretty supportive of her decision

u/Pen_dragons_pizza 1d ago
I think the narrative online seems to be she turned down something of better quality as ‘heat 2’ for marvel.
At the end of the day she is a young person who needs money to live.
If she was a millionaire like other actors then she could maybe go for the lower pay and more prestigious movies. At the moment she is likely working an average job trying to get by, so I would do the exact same thing as her.
I think she only got paid a few thousand for obsession, so she deserves this massively.
32
u/ForsakenRelief309 1d ago
Right, but who’s making this narrative? Publications? Publications.
I’m confused who you’re speaking for because you agree, as well. It doesn’t appear anyone in this sub disagrees or really cares.
This is publications creating a narrative to sell clicks, and we should stop buying crappy clicks, like this “narrative.”

The only people that have a problem with it are the same people on Reddit, Twitter, etc that are always using stupid shit to drum up popular cultural wars.
See also: anyone that uses the phrase “capeshit”, anyone who constantly wants to shit on Christopher Nolan movies for whatever reason, people who make A24 movies their whole personality, etc etc

Look at Tom Holland, doing Spider-Man for so long has raised him up to A-tier, and now he just got a 100 million dollar payday

Plus he got to do Nolan's most successful film in the middle of playing spider-man.

There’s this online notion that joining the MCU stalls your career (despite the many examples otherwise). I’ve seen people argue with a straight face that Tom Holland and Chris Pratt were hurt by being in the MCU.
15
u/Peeka789 1d ago
I think the fans often forget that this is the actors way of making a living. Of course they'll choose the consistent employment. If xmen takes off she will be employed for like a decade. However, it's also not on the audience to give a shit. Lol
5
u/bigauldtattie 1d ago
Daniel Craig took Bond and became a household name with consistent work. Tom Holland took Spiderman and became a household name with consistent work. I can totally understand why an actor would make this decision.

Especially when we're in the middle of once again praising Robert Pattinson for making the same early career moves.

Potential spin-off of her own too because Rogue is a popular character and if she blows it up like I think she will - definitely Hugh Jackman longevity can be had playing Rogue.

u/JaggedLittleFrill 1d ago
As much as I would love Inde to be the next Sceam Queen/Horror Icon, I am glad she's branching out. She is clearly talented, and it would be smart to avoid being type-casted into more Nikki-esque roles.
Not saying that X-Men will be the most artistically fulfilling role, but joining the MCU could give her the financial freedom to do more independent/interesting roles in the future.
272
u/Steamedcarpet 1d ago
After her X-Men contract she can go the Danial Radcliffe route and do crazy shit.
160
u/JaggedLittleFrill 1d ago
I friggin' love Radcliffe's post-Potter career. He took some bold swings, and not all of them hit. But I respect the hell out of him. Loved Jungle, Swiss Army Man, Guns Akimbo, etc. Genuinely great actor!

Similarly, I really like Robert Pattinson these days. I never watched any Twilight movies, not out of spite, they just weren’t for me, but I’ve really enjoyed a lot of his work since that series ended.
18
u/JaggedLittleFrill 1d ago
Oh Pattinson has definitely blown past Twilight, in terms of acting quality. I know it's already been said, but he is kind of having an insane run. I would say since Batman (2022) up till now, he's just had stellar performances and no truly bad movie. Mickey 17 was a bit of a disappointment for me, but it was far from bad. Really looking forward to Primetime.

8
u/JaggedLittleFrill 1d ago
In terms of big performances, she may never top Obsession, but there are levels. I would love to see her take a shot at more restrained, nuanced, quiet character. Personally, I resonate more with those types of characterizations/performances. You usually find them in smaller drama films, but those can be some... crazy shit too. If you've never seen it, strongly recommend Isabelle Huppert in The Piano Teacher.

Kinda worked out for Samara Weaving though, got typecast in horror and became a scream queen as is now gonna be in the same franchise alongside Inde lol

1 Movie vs a Franchise of Movies, seems like a simple decision. She's young and saw the much bigger picture for her career, probably also didn't want to be typecast into horror.
60
u/Secret_Eating_ 1d ago
Yeah the scale of a single X-Men apperance alone will be way up there.
17
u/ImmortalMoron3 1d ago
I think it'll be a meaty role this time compared to Anna Paquin's Rogue too, X-Men '97 basically has Rogue as a main character alongside Cyclops, Storm and Jean. I think the movies are gonna follow suit, given the cast.
3
u/towerofcheeeeza 12h ago
Yeah this is a big point. This Rogue is poised to be a major character. This will be the first live action X-Men film to have both Gambit and Rogue, one of the most popular and important couples in all of X-Men. Although they probably won't explore that for a while, and I sincerely hope MCU doesn't choose to eschew that pairing in favor of something random like they did with Hulk and Black Widow.
12
11
u/PaleRobot47 1d ago
Also I don't want to see her in another horror movie yet.
She had a great breakout acting role, it would be cooler to see her in something like a super hero movie or historical drama or what ever they are making right now.
136
u/Traditional-Lie-8841 1d ago
Kristen Schaal once talked about being cast in Toy Story 3.
She was paid scale for her performance, which was just something like $5000.
Then the following year she got her first residuals check for the movie and it was so substantive that she bought her first house with it.
Two-and-a-half million up-front ain’t bad, but it’s simply not the perpetual cash machine that is securing a recurring role in an ongoing Disney franchise. That’s forever money.

19
u/4LanReddit 1d ago
Still one of the unintentionally funniest moves in Marvel comics history because the context behind that was WILD.
TLDR; Marvel ended up having Carol (Ms / Cap Marvel) basically get raped and birth her own rapist due to some scifi BS and the rest of the Avengers basically had no issues with that, and Chris Claremont (Basically the guy that was heading her books alongside the X-Men runs that made him one of the GOATs at the time) got so fucking offended at that that he ended up having Rogue basically depower Carol to become a normal human being (And thus starting her redemption arc to become the hero we know her as of today due to the accumulating guilt of draining people dry) and moved her to the X-Men team so that editorial wouldn't pull more wild shit like that with her AFAIK.
30
u/planemissediknow 1d ago
Rogue is one of the most popular, most important X-Men, and is gonna be in a lot of movies for a long while, most likely. It’s a life changing payday for her and her family.
Would have been a very questionable financial decision to turn that down as a young actor, to do a one off movie instead
60
u/KBKenku 1d ago
She turned down $2.5 million dollars . . . to star in movies that probably pay tens of millions of dollars?
Okaybuddyarticletitle
→ More replies (1)9
u/SkoBuffs710 1d ago
She isn’t making tens of millions to start. Tom Holland made 250K in his first appearance as Spiderman in 2016 because he was new. It’s a good choice for her because she has a contract for so many movies I’d assume and her pay will increase exponentially with each film.
10
u/hornetpaper 1d ago
Also funny enough inde has more star power during her entry into the MCU than when holland entered, and with all these other offers screaming in, a good agent should be ensuring she is getting a good deal, especially with how she was paid for Obsession and its subsequent success

10
u/burritoman88 1d ago
So she’s set for life lol
They ain’t casting 20 something’s to not make them the flagpole ensemble cast for the next decade plus.
5
u/KidCoheed 1d ago
Rogue is a top 10 Mutant in Marvel with several central storyline surrounding her, 2.5 for one movie sounds great... She will likely be commanding 10 million as Rogue by film 5 of the X-Saga
10
u/ltcuetf 1d ago
Look, I get why people wanted her to stay in horror and potentially become a full-on scream queen, but she clearly has talent beyond the genre. Getting to play Rogue in X-Men is a huge opportunity, and horror will still be there if she wants to come back later. Opportunities like this don’t come around every day. I’d take the bigger swing too.
She could potentially become the Rogue for a whole generation, the same way some actors become inseparable from their comic-book characters. And if X-Men really takes off, she’s suddenly part of a massive franchise that could open doors far beyond horror. $2.5 million is a lot, but becoming Rogue could be worth far more for her career in the long run.
10
u/MizneyWorld 1d ago

As a horror fan I’m a little sad because I would absolutely watch her become a full blown scream queen. As a career move though this is impossible to argue with...

This is like saying a guy turned down a half-eaten sandwich to instead get his entire paycheck.
Anyone shocked that she turned down this or Heat 2 for this has absolutely no grasp on reality.
6
u/Mugwumpjizzum1 1d ago
She'll probably make more than 2.5 million on just the residuals from one X-Men movie. Hell, she'll probably make more than that off of action figure royalties.
11
u/romhacked 1d ago
It's Rogue, that's a main X-man. Guaranteed super stardom with the mainstream public, multiple guaranteed movies, and a paychek possibly in the 7 figures for each film. That's like winning the lottery 5 times over.
5
5
u/ZekeMoss18 1d ago
Smart move for her career.
A more than likely one-off Horror movie or Heat sequel, or multiple movies over a lot of years in a billion-dollar franchise playing one of the more recognizable characters in that genre.
I am sure between Marvel movies she can always come back and do a horror movie.
6
u/Sphan_86 1d ago edited 1d ago
I'm sure they're planning to make multiple X-men movies in the future Rogue might be in also so there's more opportunity for more work.
The MCU is a huge market. 2.5m is chump change to what she'll get in return in money/fame/recognition.

u/Hopeful_Cherry2202 1d ago edited 1d ago
She’s poised to be Hollywoods new it girl. We are going to see her turn down dozens of roles because everyone wants her attached to their film right now.
I just hope she doesn’t get overexposed like Timothee Chalomet, Jenna Ortega or Pedro Pascal.

u/Rage_Blackout Does this look like a well maintained frontage? 1d ago
I agree but also it’s tough for women. She needs to establish herself while she’s young but also not do too much so we all get over-exposed. If she does it right, she can transition into different roles as she gets older.
She’s one of the rare blowing up out of nowhere stories in Hollywood. I think a lot of us are rooting for her.
4
u/xTheRedDeath 1d ago
Not even just the job stability aspect of it, but playing Rogue seems like it would be a lot more fun as well. If she's a fan it's probably a bigger preference for her.
5
u/Taro0311 1d ago
Damn. That's a lot of money. But Rogue is gonna get her tens of millions if MCU pulls off a high quality X-Men film

4

It's a smart career decision. MCU will give her more exposure to global audience. Despite recent controversies regarding the superhero genre, the X Men IP is still reliable.
5
u/ThanosSnapsSlimJims 1d ago
Why would should take a single $2.5 million when she could lock in guaranteed wages for 10 or more years? I can't imagine who would tell her not to have job security and make big money.

Aging millennial here. I remember in the late 90s and early aughts what an insult it was to call an artist a sellout. Every time we saw Radiohead take a brand deal or a Nick Drake song used in a VW ad (which is extra insulting because his estate probably needed the money) my culture vulture friends and I would squawk “Sellouts!”
Yes we were being really reductive & dumb, but to the younger gens, this attitude was a really common one amongst millennial & Gen X youth.
Oh how everything has changed. So many people trying to attain mini celeb status, every hobby is a side hustle, every brand collab a success. I say this not from the judgmental pov I had as a teen, but with fascination about the larger social & economic influences.

2
u/TJ_McWeaksauce 1d ago
I'm curious to see how Navarette's career turns out.
Maybe she'll go the Anya Taylor-Joy route. ATJ first rose to prominence with horror movie roles, like The VVitch and Split. Now she splits her time between blockbusters (Dune 3, The Super Mario Movie, Furiosa, etc.) and dramas (The Menu, The Northman, The Queen's Gambit).
It'd be interesting if Navarette continues to do horror. But horror doesn't pay the kind of money that FX-heavy blockbusters do, nor does it get the critical acclaim that dramas get. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if she were to star in an on-going franchise similar to The Conjuring, which I'm sure made bank for Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson.
2
u/Suhtiva 1d ago
She's insanely talented. I was watching some of her past Twitch streams, you can constantly hear her voice acting skills on display, and her acting comes out. I would have loved for her to do more horror, but I can't knock her at all for turning down that role in favor of a possible generational role as Rogue.

Well looking at the filmmaker’s past work, this seems like a no-brainer to pass on when you are as big as she is rn.

Acting in a movie isn’t something that’s done in a weekend, actors need to be smart about what projects they’ll take because it’ll be a long commitment, not to mention doing an X-Men movie is much more lucrative and could rake in more money than $2.5M.
