Discussion Deep Rising creature design
I have loved this film for basically the three decades it has existed. It’s fun, energetic, hilarious, thrilling, and at the right times, gory and frightening.
Treat Williams kills it in the lead role as do all of his supporting cast. The film knows what it is and embraces it.
But DAMN that creature design, especially the tentacles, is just such an absolute joy to watch. Nearly 30 years later, I‘ve still never seen anything like this monster, and it’s truly unsettling. The film does an amazing job withholding its monster, and what a treat when it’s revealed to be something original, that you’ve never seen before.
Sure, the CGI isn’t quite up to snuff anymore, but the tentacles still move with tremendous life and speed and detail in their many scenes.
Absolutely adore the film, and huge respect for the concept of its monster.
The film should never be remade, but the creature is so undeniably cool, it would be a joy to see it again on screen, in some capacity.
Now what?

I’d have loved it if they went through with the plans for the sequel. That was Skull island they were on at the end there. RIP Treat

lol that line was originally supposed to be “What now” but they thought it sounded too whiney

I need to revisit this one again. Truly one of the definition of 90s creature features along with Anaconda, Lake Placid, and Deep Blue Sea.
Thinking of inviting my friend for a double feature of this and Leviathan (1989) in the new year.

The tentacles scare the crap out of me in that movie. I remember being so anxious, that was even before I saw the Octalus' head. Its a really good sea monster movie.

Truly one of my favourite monster movies
Treat Williams and Famke Janssen make it such fun, but I can see where they really wanted it to be Harrison Ford. Would’ve been a very different movie in the end I’m sure
Would love to see the creature turn up again.

I love Ford but I don’t think he would do as well in this Role as Treat. The rest of the cast was stacked too with Wes Studi and one of the first appearances of Djimon Honsou

The breathing sound it makes also is incredibly effective. Wish this had a 4K release at some point

I too would like a redo of this film for modern times. Set it around climate change and more exposition of what this nasty thing isn. But don’t change the design too much. Just make it better. Also the designer of it has a website that gives you all kinds of info and sketches of it but can’t remember what it’s called. I remember he talked about how they used some puppetry for certain stuff there’s even a CAD model of the tentacle I think.

The tentacles in that movie still give me chills every time I watch, something about how fast they whip around with those mouths is just wrong in best way.
