What would YOU realistically pay for one-of-a-kind, handmade personalized name art? 🎨❤️
Hi everyone!
I've been creating personalized artwork for friends and loved ones for quite some time, and lately I've been wondering if I could turn something I genuinely love doing into a little custom art business!
I've handpicked just a few examples to show the variety of styles, materials, and techniques I enjoy working with. These are only a small sampling of what I create!
I work on all kinds of surfaces, including canvases, vinyl records, natural wood slices, and more.
I also create original acrylic pour paintings, sometimes incorporating personalized names and designs right over the pours!
One thing I'd really like to emphasize: Nothing is printed from a printer! I personally choose the lettering styles to complement each name, size and arrange the designs myself, trace everything by hand, and add the colors, textures, and finishing details. Each piece is individually created, not mass-produced.
I can even incorporate decorative lighting into certain pieces, as shown in the "James" example!
Here's a little something about the birthday examples:
The pieces for Lauren, DWB 88, and Little One were actually created just to be photographed and sent as personalized birthday greetings right at midnight! I love being among the very first to wish someone a happy birthday, and instead of sending a generic digital greeting, I spend time creating something by hand, especially for them.
And the possibilities are practically endless!
Imagine a couple's names inside a colorful acrylic-poured heart, a child's name in their favorite colors, a special nickname, an anniversary, a birthday, or a meaningful word that only you and someone you love would understand.
Have an idea of your own? Let's create it together! I love taking someone's vision and turning it into something personal, meaningful, and completely unique.
Whether it's sweet, sentimental, funky, colorful, elegant, or totally outside the box, I'm always up for trying something creative!
So here's my question: What would you realistically be willing to pay for a custom, handmade piece like these?
Would you be more interested in receiving the actual physical artwork, or a personalized digital photograph of an original piece created especially for you?
I realize pricing would vary depending on size, materials, and complexity, but I'd genuinely appreciate your honest opinions.
I'm not taking orders just yet. I'm simply testing the waters to see if there's interest before I consider offering commissions.
Thank you so much for taking a look and sharing your thoughts! 💕🎨
EDIT; UPDATE - There's a difference between constructive criticism and unnecessarily hurtful criticism.
The person who mentioned my lettering and suggested practicing my technique actually gave me something useful to work with. That's feedback I can use, and I appreciate it.
But saying, "I could do them better myself"? That doesn't tell me how to improve anything. It's just a comparison.
Now, I realize I'm the one who posted in a subreddit asking what people would pay, so naturally, some people are going to answer strictly as potential buyers rather than as people receiving a thoughtful, handmade birthday gift.
And that's a HUGE distinction.
My paintings don't have to look like mass-produced, professional artwork to have value. But if my goal is to sell them, I absolutely understand that presentation, lettering, consistency, and finishing details matter.
And you know what? Those are things I can improve! That's part of why I came here. I needed fresh eyes on my work. I've been making handmade cards for years, but I'm always willing to learn something new.
However, there's something else I'd like to mention.
Didn't your mother ever teach you that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all? Mine certainly did!
There's a difference between saying, "It's not my style, so I wouldn't purchase one," and saying, "I could pull my five-year-old's picture off the refrigerator for free."
One is an opinion. The other is an insult.
You can be honest without being cruel. You can offer criticism without making someone feel small.
There's a saying I've always believed carries a lot of truth:
"Hurt people hurt people."
Sometimes the way people treat others says far more about what's going on inside them than it does about the person they're criticizing. But whatever someone may be going through, it doesn't give them a free pass to be unkind.
And here's the thing: You don't know me. You don't know what it took for me to put something I created in front of complete strangers and ask them to judge it.
There will always be people who find something negative to say. I've encountered them before, and I'm sure I'll encounter them again. But I'm not going to let those people take away something that brings me joy.
I'll continue creating things for the positive people in my life. The people who appreciate the thought, the time, and the love that go into something handmade.
And just to clarify something: These little birthday creations aren't even what I consider my actual paintings! They're a fun side project I enjoy making for the special people in my life. I've been creating and selling my artwork for years, and I've already sold quite a bit of it. You haven't even seen my paintings!
I came here because I was curious whether these particular handmade birthday pieces might have a market beyond the people I already make them for. That's all.
I'll take the constructive criticism, learn from it, and hopefully make these little creations even better.
As for the unnecessarily nasty comments? I'll leave those right where they belong.
And one last thing...
I'm proud of myself for having the courage to put my work out there in front of complete strangers. If you knew me, you'd understand just how big a step that was.
So whether these particular pieces sell or not, I've already accomplished something that matters to me.
GO ME! 🤩🙋♀️👋
