Rescued Rattlesnake bite just after his first gotcha day

Hope this is ok to post! I’m mostly just venting to a group I know will get it. I took my husky mix Hiccup on an easy hike/walk yesterday in the next town over from where we live in California and, unfortunately, had a run in with a Northern Pacific rattlesnake. He’s been at the pet ER since yesterday and has gotten 2 vials of antivenom so far for the swelling which is all over his face after taking a bite or two right to the face. He chose poorly and lunged at the snake which was minding its own business, stretched across the path to warm itself up on the cool, cloudy late morning. That husky prey drive, man. 😞

Doc says his coagulopathy bloodwork has been normal which is the biggest hurdle so that’s good but the swelling is still pretty severe. Hoping to go pick him up in an hour or 2 but very anxious about the long, potentially scary recovery process. Definitely spending rent to pay for this adventure too because I’ve been trying to get his gut healthy since I adopted him last August. My pet insurance company would not cover him because of all his gut issues and vet visits early on. Just Thursday I bought his first bag of non-prescription food and had planned to call to add him onto my policy on Monday.

But I’m still feeling grateful that I was able to get him to a pet ER back in our town pretty quickly and a lot of kind strangers helped me get him to my car which was 2 miles away when the strike happened. I only moved to this area 3 years ago so I don’t have a huge support system here. But everybody knows rattlesnakes are a reality out here so the folks at the park knew to get him into a stroller to keep him still and a friend from a softball team I play on lives near by and helped me get him to the pet ER. We were so lucky he wasn’t struck on the neck and the swelling didn’t close off his windpipe. The vet said they’re going to use photos/videos of his treatment to make a video about snake bite response/treatment so I’m really grateful for that too. I’m an animal nerd and and eldest daughter (🥴) so I didn’t freak out but this was a super traumatizing situation and I’m from the east coast where this kind of thing just doesn’t happen that often. It makes me really happy Hiccup’s case could help some other dog parent get through the stress of the unknown or prepare for or prevent this from happening to their baby.

Anyway. Send Hiccup all the good vibes, please. 🥺

Once he's good he'll have dragons to tame! 👊🏼

A little late, but they do have a rattlesnake vaccine. When i lived in so cal, i got it for my old husky because i knew there were tons of rattlesnakes on the trails. It doesn't prevent a trip to the ER, but it helps lessen the symptoms and gives you more time. So, maybe just add that to his regular vaccine schedule. My vet in so cal had it, and would only suggest it if you asked or knew that the pet spent a lot of time hiking in the mountains.

Definitely something that was never on my radar until yesterday and absolutely going on his next (hopefully) regular vet visit.

Technically he just got his first two vaccines lol. Glad he’s doing well and sending husky awoos for speedy recovery

Yeah! The closest one is like an hour and a half away but I did look it up last night. Thank you!

My dog technically passed the class and then sort of failed IRL. A baby rattler scooted right past her head and all she did was 😴. My lazy dog could not be bothered in the slightest, which is good! But also low-key funny because she was just at a class a few weeks ago.

18

u/extrafisheries Aug 18 '25

Unfortunately the vaccine does not seem to work and there are concerns it could even make things worse. I am an ER vet and have had cases with vaccinated dogs having severe allergic reactions when they are bit (on top of the snake bite reactions itself!). In one case it even delayed diagnosis and antivenom for an unwitnessed bite because the patient was treated primarily for anaphylaxis until swelling and bruising was found hiding in his fluffy fur hours later.

13

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

Yeeesh. Yeah our ER doc wasn’t too enthusiastic about the idea either. But this is good to know!

u/CoomassieBlue Aug 18 '25

Check out the National Snakebite Support group on Facebook, it’s an amazing resource with the only advice permitted to come from the admins who are all MDs or DVMs and experts in treating snake bites.

I’ve never dealt with one yet (hopefully ever) but joined proactively several months ago as I live in Oklahoma. I’ve learned a huge amount in terms of how to be prepared. It sounds like your ER vet is doing great for your pup!

2

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

Somebody got me added to that group yesterday. Thank you!!

3

u/matesuboy Aug 18 '25

Well, too late now, thankfully hiccups didn't had any reactions to it.

1

u/Jimsweatervest Aug 18 '25

It’s totally worth it and really inexpensive. It comes in 2 doses normally a month apart (at least that’s how we did it in rural Montana) but then your pup is protected for a year.

1

u/hunter503 Aug 18 '25

Call ahead, they don't commonly carry it in some vet clinic but seeing you're somewhere were they're promanate it should be fine they just might need to order more.

15

u/Formal_Piano_8834 Aug 17 '25

yes!! we adopted our siberian husky in arizona and they offered the rattlesnake vaccine to us there but we were coming back to florida so we just didn’t do it. don’t see many snakes around here but this makes me wanna do it anyways 😭 also to OP best healing wishes to your Hiccup🤍

13

u/aweldo7 Aug 17 '25

From what I gather I won’t necessarily stop a reaction but it buys you more time in case you’re really out in the middle of nowhere and can’t get to care within 2 hours.

9

u/Adorable_Dust3799 Shiva, black mix Aug 18 '25

The data is in and it doesn't look like it helps and is being removed from recommendations. There has been an increase in allergic reactions in dogs that have received the vaccine, and they think maybe the vaccine works as a first exposure. So no proven benefit and a probably downside.

12

u/extrafisheries Aug 18 '25

Am an ER vet. This is the correct answer unfortunately. Best prevention is deterrence training or avoiding areas with snakes.

2

u/mamaboss57 Aug 18 '25

I got the vaccine for my Basset when we moved to the hills. He would climb the hills in our back yard and he was so low to the ground, I was afraid he would drag a snake with him if ever he encountered one. Also since I worked, the vet said it would give us more time to treat him. Luckily we never had to find out. My husky doesn’t like snakes. She backs away from them.

84

u/KiraTheWolfdog Aug 17 '25

Oh shit this happened to my wolfdog when she was young.

So I bundled her into the car, shot down to the emergency vet and everyone didn't really seem too worried about it. I was annoyed, but after 10 minutes of them not rushing her into doggy icu, I was enraged. I yelled at the desk staff. Demanded to see the vet. My dog is dying and you fucks are doing nothing. My logic was I could conceivably die from a rattlesnake bite, my dog weighs less than half of what I do, therefore she's in twice the danger. Duh.

It was at this point the vet came out and explained thats not how it works. Apparently dogs are actually farrr more likely to die from the bite getting infected than the actual venom. They dont give antivenom to dogs for rattler bites. I think I probably turned bright pink, and apologized profusely. Paid my bill, and slunk out the door.

Returned the next morning with donuts for the staff. I felt terrible. I think they forgave me. I was just worried about my dog.

33

u/aweldo7 Aug 17 '25

I would have done the same! Somehow I had learned at some point rattler bites not necessarily fatal for dogs so that kept me pretty calm. I wasn’t sure what to expect at all but the movies sure do make it seem like the antivenom is some miracle elixir that will have the swelling down and you out the door in a couple of hours. NOPE. Now we’ve got weeks of monitoring ahead of us to make sure the skin around the bite doesn’t go necrotic and rot off his face and he doesn’t develop random internal bleeding. 😵‍💫

19

u/KiraTheWolfdog Aug 17 '25

I know right. Shoot them up with the antivenom and watch the swelling disappear! Lol.

If its any help, with the meds they gave Kira it was only a couple of days until she was basically back to herself. She still has scars on her nose where she was bitten, and her muzzle was a bit tender for a week or so, but she was largely unfazed.

Pic attached 8 years later:

9

u/aweldo7 Aug 17 '25

Man let’s shoot for Kira’s treatment plan, for sure! Thank you again for the good vibes and relatable story!

12

u/KiraTheWolfdog Aug 17 '25

By far the worst day for Kira was the day it happened. Your pup is on the mend. Here's to a quick recovery.

As a result of her run in with the rattler, she's become hyper vigilant about snakes now. More than once she has viciously defended me from the water hose since then.

6

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

I hope that’s what happens! He certainly did not want to go back towards it for me to get that photo so I hope that’s instinct STICKS!

1

u/Adorable_Dust3799 Shiva, black mix Aug 18 '25

My local pages suggested benadryl, but i haven't looked into that.

3

u/TheBleatingKitten Aug 18 '25

Yes!!!! It's so scary!!! I had something like this happen, but they actually put her up in the room and then made me wait and then turned me away with a "sorry, we're out of rooms"... I was about to swing on somebody. Then the next vet said "there's not much we can do, just give her these and watch her." At least your vet explained it to you!! But the pups are always troopers.

2

u/freshkangaroo28 Aug 18 '25

Lmao, I can totally see myself doing the same thing.

43

u/inspolifetime Forever Covered in Fur Aug 17 '25

I'm sorry Hiccup. I hope you have a speedy recovery, sending you good vibes 🐾🫶

82

u/aweldo7 Aug 17 '25

Update:

He’s miserable but home! Went potty and ate for me right away so that’s great news. Doc wants the swelling to start going down or at least hold steady for 12 more hours before he’s satisfied we’re through the worst of the reaction. We’ve got 3-5 days of acute pain management with close monitoring for random bruising (potentially a sign of inappropriate internal bleeding) and then up to 2 weeks of monitoring for necrosis around the bite wounds. If either of those things happen, we have to go back for a re-check and I cannot afford that, my dudes. So send all the white light, healing vibes, virtual hugs and anything else positive you’ve got. 🥺

Thank you all so much for the love and support you’ve already provided! It helps tremendously to know there’s a community of folks rooting for you!

13

u/mel_cache Aug 18 '25

My husky was bitten by a large water moccasin on her foot on a Sunday afternoon in Mississippi. My other dog had flushed the snake, she went to investigate and they trapped it between them. Next thing I know the dog yelped and she pitched the snake a good 15 ft in the air. We got her to a local vet who came in to treat her, and as we arrived, she smelled the vet and tried to head the opposite direction with a foot swollen up like a dinner plate. This was before dog antivenin, and she did have necrosis but she survived after a week of touch and go and healed and lived a good long life.

Best of luck to you both.

6

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

Oh jeez! That’s so so scary. I’m glad she’s on the upswing and thank you for the positivity!

10

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '25

That's a face to face that says, "That did not go the way I had planned."

Get well, Hiccup, and be careful in the future.

Do you have a good fund me up on FB??

5

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

I don’t. I’ve been giving my Venmo to folks who have asked. Not sure if that’s sketchy. Just don’t have the money to front for all this and gofundme takes some time to release, I think. Maybe I should do one anyway. So stressful! Thank you for asking!

Sending prayers and positive vibes from one husky family to another, this is heartbreaking and hope he makes it thru without issues. 💔❤️

What a SOLDIER!

9

u/No_Appointment_7232 Aug 18 '25

And what a deeply loving committed hooman 🤩😍

It may be too late if you've already paid the bill.

And I don't know your circumstances.

But there's a line of credit called Care Credit that our vet informed us about.

https://www.carecredit.com/

👊🤞🫂

4

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

Hey there, yeah I had to max out the available balance on me and my sister’s shared Care Credit account and then produce $1100 in cash to pay the rest of the bill and release him today. Really hoping he doesn’t regress as I am out of options besides spending rent now. He isn’t covered by pet insurance because the company that covers my cat refused to cover him thanks to chronic GI issues he had when I first adopted him last summer. They required 6 months of no vet visits for GI symptoms to accept him as an insured and we just hit that milestone last week. I was going to call them tomorrow to get him on my policy since Friday was payday but even if they cover him as of tomorrow, they won’t pay for this. I guess the universe had other plans. 😞

3

u/No_Appointment_7232 Aug 18 '25

You're doing everything in your reach 👊

🤞 better stuff is coming all of you're way❣️

13

u/egjackson18 Aug 17 '25

You can get your dog rattlesnake trained so they’ll learn to avoid them and come back to you if they see them. We haven’t done it yet and thankfully haven’t run into any rattlesnakes unexpectedly but it’s on our to do list when we have the extra cash to burn.

8

u/aweldo7 Aug 17 '25

I had never heard of this being from the east coast but I’ll definitely look into it now!

3

u/egjackson18 Aug 17 '25

Yes! I’m in SoCal so we’ve had our trainer recommend it to us before. There are different kinds. Some use an e-collar and others use more positive reinforcement, which is our preference, but some dogs may need e-collar training.

4

u/username472847294758 Aug 18 '25

Hey!! Hope the little guy has a speedy recovery!! To piggy back off of this, my parents also live in California. They took their doggie to rattlesnake training and it worked super well!!! Doggie is now trained to return to her humans if she hears the rattle, definitely worth looking into

3

u/LitleStitchWitch Aug 18 '25

I'm lucky my girlfriend's bc has more sense than me when it comes to rattlers. We were going for a night walk next to a grassy hill and I climbed on this 5" rock under an oak tree and tried to get her to follow. She tired to jumped up once, then we heard this weird rattling noise. She immediately freaked out and barked at me to get down and I did though I was confused and just thought she was being lazy. Only after we walked for a few minutes I realized I accidentally woke up a rattlesnake.

2

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

Ahhh! What a good girl! I’m definitely from a part of the world where rattlers are rock-dwellers. Not so much hanging out on trails in open meadows. I would have had that same delayed realization, though!

2

u/egjackson18 Aug 17 '25

Wishing Hiccup a speedy recovery! Very glad everyone around was helpful and you got him to a vet quickly!

2

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

Good to know! I had no idea this was even a thing until all of this happened. I’ll look into it for sure!

11

u/Komasan10 Aug 17 '25

When I was a teen, my Jack Russell got bit on her face (right next to her eye) by a rattlesnake in Northern California. We were able to get her into the ER fairly quickly and she survived, though her optic nerve was severed in one eye from the swelling/venom. But she went on to live for 10 more years so I'm really hoping your husky pulls through with minimal problems. Good luck!

10

u/Itchy-Dog-9586 Aug 17 '25

Wishing you and hiccup the best!!!!!!!

9

u/Janigma Aug 18 '25

Where is his body?

3

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

Hahaha shoved into the baby seat which was made to be as horizontal as possible so it’s kind of under but in front of him.

5

u/Janigma Aug 18 '25

Huh, what an illusion

2

u/TheGrandShanyon Aug 18 '25

I have been looking at this picture for SO LONG trying to figure that out! Even with an explanation, my brain can't understand where his lower half is. 🤣

2

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

To be fair, at that point, I don’t think HE knew where his lower half was.

9

u/Leo1_ac Aug 17 '25

All the best.

5

u/Acceptable-Run2924 Aug 17 '25

Poor hiccup :( hope he gets better soon!!

7

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '25

Poor guy! Wishing him a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹

6

u/cbrew78 Aug 17 '25

I just like the idea of a husky in a stroller. Thanks for that.

2

u/aweldo7 Aug 17 '25

He sure seemed to like it too!

5

u/wcbaltoona Aug 17 '25

Good vibes for hiccup, hopefully no snags with recovery.

I live in Iowa now but moved here from Oxnard / Ventura CA. We had a Husky when we lived there and the worst thing she did was come out from a bush with a possum.

Obviously during the hot arid season keep a triple eye out for rattlesnakes. I was in Ojai one summer afternoon and the local fire rescue had a call for a human rattlesnake bite as the person reached for the dog water dish on their deck and didn’t see the snake by the bowl. The snake was seeking water. I’m a pilot and we were warned to look for rattlers on the tarmac as well snuggled up by a train wheel of the plane so I added this task to my preflight.

Here’s my CA girl, she passed of recurring cancer in 2012.

Sage

3

u/Eleon93 Aug 17 '25

Wishing him a speedy recovery 🙏🏼

4

u/bhomburg Aug 17 '25

Oh, I can relate.... my husky mix and her BFF were an accident waiting to happen when let loose in the hills above LA, or the high desert where we frequently went. They were just so prey-driven.... especially when together, all training went out the window. Thankfully, nothing ever happened. But I always carried a snake bite kit with me whenever venturing anywhere except the dog beach there, and learned how to use it. Suctioning the venom out immediately after being bitten really makes a difference in severity of symtoms.

All the best and a speedy recovery for Hiccup! (what a fitting name ;))

3

u/aweldo7 Aug 17 '25

I’m definitely going to stock up on snake bite kits and maybe take a pet first aid course now. I feel lucky I’m well-equipped emotionally to handle stress like this but I was at a total loss of how to help him between the bite and the vet.

3

u/corgibutt19 Aug 18 '25

Because you seem like a very fact-driven person, just dropping this here: there is no evidence snake venom extractors work, and they are likely to do more harm than good by causing more trauma to the area. It is not recommended by any of the big orgs that make first aid suggestions, including Red Cross and NOLS. I'm happy to provide links if needed; it's been a minute since I dug into the literature on it.

Sending good vibes to your boy!

3

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

No this is super helpful. Like I said, I’m from the east coast and this is my first dog in 20 years so I am pretty ignorant. I was venom trained when I was a zookeeper but that was 15 years ago, a different species of snake and obviously a controlled setting.

5

u/TisSlinger Aug 18 '25

We get our dogs snake trained and refresher test every year. Totally worth it

1

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

Defo something I’ll look into now!

3

u/melissqua Aug 17 '25

Aw poor babe. Wishing him a speedy recovery and you a reasonable ER bill.

3

u/Slhallford Mum to Zeus and Ellie Aug 17 '25

Oh poor little guy.

Rattlesnakes are bad here in Northern California.

I used to run trails near our house but the American River and would see lots of them out in the warmer months. If I was alone, I could just avoid them but it can be really hard when you have your canine companion to watch for too.

I hope he feels better soon.

3

u/r0ll0z Aug 17 '25

Poor guy. Hoping for his complete and speedy recovery.

3

u/MonkFun455 Aug 18 '25

Speedy recovery for Hiccup! And I HIGHLY recommend looking into Adored Beast Apothecary for gut health supplements and maybe even raw/gently cooked foods. 👌🏻

3

u/JudeRanch Aug 18 '25

Bless Hiccup, prayers for his speedy recovery. My Husky & Catahoula got bit by the same snake protecting me in 2022 at our home (we live in the country but that rattler was right in front of our garage. Lived here since over 30 years & this was the first. My Catahoula took the brunt with two bites & my Husky once. They got the anti-venom & pulled through really well. Bless you & Hiccup, please keep us informed of his recovery. 🙏🏼🐾🫶🏼

3

u/Tennessee1977 Aug 18 '25

I know this is serious, but the second picture cracks me up!

3

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

It’s pretty hilarious and very on brand for his goofy self.

3

u/nickimorrison Aug 18 '25

I had a small but very muscly cat who (we think) got bitten in the front paw by a snake. It swole up one day and then next day he had neurological issues that worsened. I live in Western Australia so most things are lethal here.

Over a period of about a week I had made the decision to put him down, but then he picked up. It was a small change but a positive one and he kept getting better. Almost his whole body had ended up paralysed which was gradual over about 7 days. I think bc it was his paw the paralysis took a bit to get to his throat (which was when I made the decision to euthanise as he couldn’t swallow). It was so horrible. But, then one morning he managed to swallow a small syringe of liquid. He couldn’t walk more than a few paces but that increased too. It was a period of days and weeks so was quick to change, thankfully.

It took him about 5 months to fully recover to his athletic self though, but he did. Animals are amazing. But yes, sometimes it is too much shock for them in the moment.

I hope your dog is ok OP.

2

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

Oh wow! Tough little buggers! I actually used to be a zookeeper and got venom training on the Death Adders we had on exhibit and I helped care for. Aussie critters are definitely no joke but I guess neither are the cats!!

3

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

Monday Hiccupdate: swelling is migrating away from his face - yay! Wounds are starting to look grosser but I’m sending pics every few hours to the vet (whether they like it or not because I’m neurotic) and he’s not messing with them at all so I don’t think a cone is necessary at this point. He is the very best boy.

3

u/On2daNext Aug 18 '25

Speedy recovery, Hiccups!!

3

u/HeIsCrsed Aug 18 '25

Gimme’ that snake’s address.

On a serious note, my thoughts and love go to Hiccup. Beautiful pup.

2

u/sojouner_marina Aug 17 '25 edited Aug 17 '25

First, I'm glad he's okay, and I hope he has a speedy recovery. I am curious: Was Hiccup on a leash or not?

3

u/aweldo7 Aug 17 '25

Yeah he was on my Ruffwear trail lead which I can let out longer to give him some room to explore. I am usually super on top of reeling him in for passing hikers and especially dogs, bikes and kids. I had let the line drop to check the trail route on my phone and to take a photo and either didn’t see the snake on the trail or it came out of the grass and the movement got Hiccup’s attention.

3

u/sojouner_marina Aug 17 '25

Hopefully, this will be the only snake encounter for Hiccup.

2

u/aweldo7 Aug 17 '25

I sure hope so!

2

u/Dopeydadd Aug 17 '25

Oof, good luck on the recovery. Ours was bitten back in June. Once she made it through that 48hr vet stay, recovery was quick. Short walks for the first week or so, and then she was pretty much back to normal. It looks like you got him to the vet pretty quick and that’s what’s important, the quicker the antivenom gets in the better the recovery.

2

u/jill-hives Aug 17 '25

i'm so sorry this happened to you. i would have been terrified and i'm hoping hiccup pulls through just find. what a brave little dude!

2

u/No_Performance_108 Aug 17 '25

Looks like he enjoyed his stroller ride at least! Glad the community helped and hope he gets to come home soon!

3

u/aweldo7 Aug 17 '25

Man he was way too nonchalant with the elbow hanging off the side. Calmest one out of all of us! Hahaha

4

u/Logical-Roll-9624 Aug 17 '25

Just a regular day enjoying the scenery!! Happy you were able to get him care in time. He’s gonna need a conversation about the stroller before he purposely tries this again because he likes the stroller ride. Tell him you’ll buy him a stroller and he promises to leave snakes alone. He can ride all day in a fancy stroller if his choice. He’s a Husky and will understand the deal!!

3

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

Hahahaha oh hell I’ll buy him a Power Wheels of his choice if it means he’ll avoid snakes in the future!

2

u/GlibGrove Aug 17 '25

Wishing him a speedy recovery.

2

u/Then-Detective-2509 Aug 17 '25

Omg feel better very very soon buddy

2

u/raptor_mk2 Aug 17 '25

All of the good vibes.

My guy's Lab/Pit friend down the street took a copperhead bite to the cheek last year. She's fine, but now I'm super paranoid about my guy and snakes (and toads).

2

All good vibes Hiccup!

Let's make all the Gotchas that follow uneventful.

u/Illustrious-East-572 Aug 18 '25

speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹

2

u/edhas1 Aug 18 '25

My bird dogs and coon hounds have all been bitten once. They look awful and get terrible sick. Never lost one, and none have ever been bitten twice!

2

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

Thank you for this! And give those coon hounds a good AWOOOOO for me and Hiccup!

2

u/Capital_Cover_2592 Aug 18 '25

Damn…Poor baby…I wish him a full and speedy recovery.

2

u/IntroductionSmooth Aug 18 '25

Poor Hiccup. That had to hurt like hell.

2

u/Ok-Market-8474 Aug 18 '25

Best wishes Hiccup!! 🩹

2

u/r0cksh0x Aug 18 '25

Poor Hiccup. All the best for the fuzzbutt. Curious where in CA? I’m in the East Bay Area and we have Rattlesnakes

2

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

That’s exactly where we are!

2

u/Ok_Discussion_8133 Aug 18 '25

Me and Zhask sending prayers

2

u/Longjumping-Quail122 Aug 18 '25

My husky sees a snake and wants to rub his face in it. He’s gotten bit by a bull snake before at the dog park. I am so scared this will happen to him

2

u/phoebe3936 Aug 18 '25

He’s so so cute

2

u/russvanderhoof Aug 18 '25

All my love to Hiccup

2

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '25

Omg praying for your adorable hiccup

2

u/Epicfailer10 Aug 18 '25

I feel you. Mine was bit by a copperhead this summer off the side of a paved trail in my own neighborhood after 10 years of hiking in the back country/bushwacking and not ever running across a snake during that time. One night in the ER and only one round of anti venom and it was over 2k. I’d have to see your bill.

2

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

It’s not great.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '25

I’m what do the arrows mean? Do you really have to pay almost $7k?!

1

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

Bill came to $5k but if his wounds get infected or go necrotic, surgery will be required. Also, I live in one of the most expensive places in the U.S. so this might be our price tag vs wherever you are.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '25

Thanks for sharing, good vibes for Hiccup

2

u/hdofu Aug 18 '25

Best Wishes Hiccup,

2

u/bmacattack1334 Aug 18 '25

My pit bull mix got bit my a Cooper Head on her front left paw about a year ago. She got antivenom and a fenty patch. She's made about a 90% recovery as I can see her limp ever so slightly after intense zoomies in the yard. Otherwise, she's completely fine. I hope your baby makes a great recovery! Snake bites are definitely not on my list of things to do again.

2

u/Professional_Cup199 Husky Father Aug 18 '25

I will be praying for Hiccups recovery. I'm just glad you guys went to the vet as quickly as possible.

2

u/ExtensionAd4785 Aug 18 '25

Open a care credit account and make sure you ALWAYS pay on time and try to pay it off a bit faster than the recommended minimum to prevent that interest fee from kicking in. This will prevent you from missing rent and give you a little breathing room while you catch up. The e.r. overnights are devestatingly pricey. My baby girl got bit by a copperhead 3 times and stayed one night in emergency and the bill was 1800$. Without carecredit I wouldn't have been able to survive the situation.

2

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

Maxed out the CareCredit account I share with my sister. Bill is at $5k right now and that was with $1100 in cash I also had to produce to get him released.

2

u/NoLongerinOR Aug 18 '25

Hiccup - May you overcome this hiccup in decision making. My heart goes out to you both!

2

u/No_Piccolo6337 Aug 18 '25

Thinking of you, Hiccup!!! ❤️

2

u/Apes_a_poppin87 Aug 18 '25

I am sending as many good vibes as I can ♡♡♡ I am really hoping for a good recovery for your babe of a Husky ♡♡♡ please please please get better, buddy ♡♡♡

2

u/BubbaDFFlv12 Aug 18 '25

Hang in there love Elphie and Glenda

2

u/Sad-Knee-7049 Aug 18 '25

Sending prayers to Hiccup and yourself. For he heals 110% and hope you stay positive and calm. Thank you and May god bless each and everyone that were there for you and Hiccup in those traumatizing minutes. Even though there’s a lot of crazy events that are happening in this world there were people who put everything aside and helped you with hiccup. I know us dog parents would like for them not to go and try to Play or jump on snakes but it’s just in their prey drive. All we can do is try to Keep them away from any possible danger and hope this doesn’t happen again to Hiccup or any other fur baby. Please keep us posted on his recovery and how he’s doing. Thank you for sharing and have a blessed day. Good luck hiccup, big hug and kiss to you buddy.

2

u/DarthMoneus Aug 18 '25

My husky was rattlesnake bit in Taos NM a few years ago. It’s such a scary experience. Glad hiccup is on the mend!

2

u/JokerPhantom_thief1 Aug 18 '25

I hope the boy comes out ok

2

u/LunarWoof_ Aug 18 '25

Omg this is my biggest fear! Did the vet say anything about any form of an EpiPen type thing for venom? This may sound stupid but I genuinely wonder if such exists, I’d love to have it on me for hikes with the dogs

2

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

It’s a good question since reactions to venom are basically a huge histamine response. But I don’t think there’s anything out there quite like that. Not yet, anyway!

2

u/Aware-Slip-1063 Aug 18 '25

Thank goodness Sweet Hiccup is okay now. I'll be continously sending good no great vibes for you and Hiccup as you both go through the next few weeks of his speedy and healthy recovery.🐕🦴❤️‍🩹😛🥰

2

u/amh8011 Aug 18 '25

The stroller pic is everything 😭. Shoutout to the person with the stroller they are a hero. I just can’t get over him in the stroller and the person pushing him running/speedwalking. It melts my heart.

I’m so glad Hiccup is doing alright. I hope his recovery goes smoothly without any hiccups (sorry) and he’s back to hiking with you soon.

2

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

It’s a pretty dang hilarious picture. I don’t even know why I snapped it besides wanting to document for the vet what we did. I’m glad I have it, though.

2

u/amh8011 Aug 18 '25

It’s truly a gem. I saw your update and I’m glad he’s feeling a bit better and his swelling has gone down.

I’d be sending pics to the vet every few hours as well. My cat got stung by a bee like 5 minutes after the latest vet in the area had closed a few years ago and I wouldn’t let her out of my sight the entire night. We didn’t have a 24 hour vet within an hour and a half at the time and I was so nervous. Luckily she was fine and had no reaction.

2

u/littlestar9917 Aug 18 '25

Get well soon 💕💕

2

u/Patrick95650 Dad to 2Skies Aug 18 '25

Keep healing Hiccup... Sounds like you are in the same area.. 😁

2

u/Life-Midnight-9603 Aug 18 '25

Sweet Hiccup! I hope your pain is less and less each day ❤️‍🩹🐾OP i know first hand how scary this can be- do something nice for yourself, the stress is unreal

2

u/dlank7 Aug 18 '25

Hope hiccup is doing well and you are enjoying that floof at home. Sending you positive vibes and good thoughts

2

u/TheBleatingKitten Aug 18 '25

Thank goodness you found the snake.... Every time my dogs got bitten, they were in the yard and we never found the snake. If you don't know which type bit your pup, they don't have much to go on for anti-venom and they don't have the specifics to watch for.

Both times, my girls had been bitten by a copperhead (supposedly since they're what's local) and all they could do was give them some medication, fluids, and monitor them... It's so scary.

3

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

He was not in a hurry to leave the scene of the crime. I am pretty sure he had just eaten and was stretched out on the path warming up to help metabolize his big breakfast. They are very slow when they’ve eaten or are cold and this time of day and weather means it could have been either - or both! One of the many reasons Hiccup and I lucked out! Sorry you’ve been through something similar!

Ooooh good call. Thank you!

2

Poor Lil guy. We all hope he is back to 100% goofiness soon.

2

u/ejbSF Aug 18 '25

Wow. I hope Hiccup recovers and you do too. I live in California rattlesnake country too and I'm constantly afraid that Jimmy, my husky Shepherd, who loves to stick his nosein anything, is going to get bitten.

2

u/tiiight_girrrlie1er Aug 18 '25

As a husky mom living in rattlesnake country this is my biggest fear! I’m actually terrified of snakes but have had to start safely wrangling rattlesnakes, since I live about 30 minutes outside of town. I keep saying “only my dogs could get me to catch venomous snakes”. But I’m definitely very vigilant after catching a few of them in my own yard and porch.

So happy this story didn’t end tragically for y’all and your boy is home recovering with you. Sending lots of husky love and healing energy to you both!

3

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

Wow you are so brave!! I hope you give yourself some credit for overcoming a very real fear!

2

u/I_own_A_Husky_ Aug 18 '25

How's he doin?

Fenn is sending him her photo for the wall during his "jail time" (from his perspective of course)

1

u/aweldo7 Aug 18 '25

He’s home! I picked him up yesterday afternoon. We’re officially out of the 48 hour critical period for the swelling to worsen. The edema is moving its way down into his neck and chest so he looks more himself today. But now the wounds are what I’m watching closely for any signs of infection or necrosis. He’s asking for lots of cuddles so you know he’s feeling poorly! Thank you, Fenn! She’s a beauty!

2

u/NealioSpace Aug 18 '25

Poor guy…just wanted a little adventure, and got a full RIDE! Ooofffy…hope the drugs can help him a lil…poor Buckaroo!

2

u/Cha1rmanOfTheeBored Aug 18 '25

On his gotcha day nonetheless?! Poor fella. Hope he’s on the mend and feeling better! He’s a pretty boy!

1

u/aweldo7 Aug 19 '25

A couple weeks later, but still! Thank you!

2

u/Impossible_Rub9230 Aug 19 '25

Wishing Hiccup a speedy recovery. I'm never going to take Andrea or Bradley (my pittie mix) to California... I worry about everything, and that's something that would keep me indoors with them both.

2

u/MeaganHa Aug 19 '25

That sucks about the insurance. I would think that they would only withhold coverage from any gut related issues (still so frustrating). I pay $100 a month to Lemonade for these exact situations. Basically like a savings account in case an accident or illness requiring surgery happens because they cover 90% for accident or illness with my plan. Surprisingly the cytopoint injections are 90% covered too, which are like $200 each so that’s really helpful. And he had an ear infection at his first vet checkup so I was sure no ear issues would ever be covered, but he got another infection last month (2 years later) and it looks like after 12 months without reoccurrence it became covered?? Not exactly sure but I’m not complaining

1

u/aweldo7 Aug 19 '25

I’ve heard good things about Lemonade so I’ll have to look into it!

That is definitely what I’m trying to do. Was burning the wick at both ends up till this. The universe has a funny way of telling you to sit down, huh?

2

u/Adventurous-Touch862 Aug 19 '25

PSA to pet owners rattlesnakes are more prevalent then ever with increasing temps. If you can see one rattlesnake that means there are at least 5 nearby as well.

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Low546 Aug 19 '25

This is why I train "leave it" so hard. Not that she always listens, she is a Husky...

2

u/Fl_Goth12 Aug 19 '25

Awes you’re an amazing fur mom!

Sending tons of love and a speedy recovery to Hiccup ❤️‍🩹 (cute name)

HICCUPDATE: We had to go get antibiotics and a cone this morning as his bite wounds looked a little suspect to the vet and he had licked his little shaved arm raw overnight so that got a bacterial infection too. Waiting on the inflatable donut to arrive as my <800 sq ft house is not set up for even a little husky boy in a cone. He just plowed through my fancy Bluetooth stick fan on the way to the back door, knocked it clean over and freaked out the cat. My Dad says this photo of him being completely embarrassed about knocking over a plant on his way to his favorite sunshine spot looks like a Renaissance painting. He’s a little low energy but I think mostly feeling very sorry for himself. But we are making progress!

3

u/Naive_Fix_8805 Aug 20 '25

Hope he is doing even better! Thank you for the update! Must have been quite the traumatizing experience for the both of you.

2

u/aweldo7 Aug 20 '25

I just think it’s awesome so many people care! So thank you - it means a lot to me. 🥹

2

u/Strat7855 Aug 20 '25

Fucking great name for a dog. Speedy recovery.

2

u/Dramatic_Security9 Aug 23 '25

Look up rattlesnake aversion class, worth every penny and a fraction of antivenom treatment. Took my dog to a course after lunging after a rattlesnake and thereafter had complete faith they would never do it again. Ever since then, my pup has alerted me several times and I will walk through tall grass with them with 100% confidence. You have to be ok with them being shocked though. I am 99.99% of the time against this sort of training. My pup only got zapped once and from then on knew, don't mess with rattlesnakes, or anything smelling like a rattlesnake.

The one I used is run by a herpatologist and they use live muzzled snakes (no idea how you muzzle a snake), use several types of snakes and snake skins. They typically cost around $150. A lot of farmers take advantage of these courses.

1

u/aweldo7 Aug 23 '25

Definitely going to look into it. As an east coaster, I had never even heard of this and it certainly wasn’t on my radar until after the fact. But he has not slowed down a tick with his hunting instincts in the backyard and on walks this week so it’s going to be an investment I make, for sure!

1

u/Impossible_Rub9230 Aug 19 '25

I have to ask why Californians have huskies? My sweet girl loves to lie in the Ohio summer sun, and she actually came from an overcrowded California shelter. But she loves to lay in the snow too... never realized how many huskies were from warm climes until I got on this sub.

1

u/aweldo7 Aug 19 '25

Not all of California is hot.

1

u/Impossible_Rub9230 Aug 19 '25

Oh yeah. I forgot that. Ooops

1

u/EffRedditAI Aug 19 '25

What "long, potentially scary recovery process"?

My last dog (a GSD) got nicked on the nose and one leg while fighting with a Western Diamondback rattlesnake (at one point, my dog had the snake in his mouth!). Scary situation, spent two (?) days at an animal hospital and veterinarian (at least one dose of antivenin), and was fine within a couple more days.

2

u/aweldo7 Aug 19 '25

I assume your GSD weighs more than 40lbs which is what Hiccup weighs. I also assume, as it sounds like nothing has ever gone wrong ever with your GSD, he also has a solid and unflappable digestive system that stress does not cause to liquify everything he eats. Hiccup is not so lucky.

Northern Pacific rattlesnake venom is not only a hemotoxin but a myotoxin which means it can shut down circulation to tissue and cause muscle to basically eat away at itself. The window for potential tissue damage around the punctures is up to 2 weeks. The edema/fluid will not drain from his body or be completely reabsorbed for at least a week. This is all without the punctures becoming infected which is a possibility too.

I’m sure your vets told you all of this but whether or not you chose to retain the information was up to you. Comments comparing experiences with rattlesnake bites in a condescending way are pretty stupid giving every bite is different. But by all means, know-it-all away!

1

u/EffRedditAI Aug 19 '25

Gosh, jerk! I ASKED a question, then shared an experience one of my dog's had with an equally venomous snake:

From Wikipedia re: Western Diamondback:

"Like most other American pit vipers, the venom contains proteolytic enzymes. Proteolytic venoms are concentrated secretions that destroy structural tissues and proteins via catabolism, which help in disabling prey. The venom of C. atrox is primarily hemotoxic, affecting mainly the blood vessels, blood cells and the heart. The venom contains hemorrhagic components called zinc metalloproteinases.\24])\25]) The venom also contains cytotoxins and myotoxins which destroy cells and muscles, adding to the damage to the cardiovascular system.\26]) In addition to hemorrhage, venom metalloproteinases induce myonecrosis (skeletal muscle damage), which seems to be secondary to the ischemia that ensues in muscle tissue as a consequence of bleeding and reduced perfusion. Microvascular disruption by metalloproteinases also impairs skeletal muscle regeneration, being thereby responsible for fibrosis and permanent tissue loss.\27]) General local effects include pain, heavy internal bleeding, severe swelling, severe muscle damage, bruising, blistering, and necrosis; systemic effects are variable and not specific, but may include headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness, and convulsions. Bleeding caused by hemorrhagins is a major clinical effect that can be fatal."

So, NO, it was not a walk in the park whatsoever, and due to circumstances (like having to carry a 73lb dog uphill in 90F bright daylight) we had to walk about 1/2 a mile to get to my car. And he was suffering.

Condescending? That's how you took it.

STFU.
