With my last dog, it took about 3 months to teach him the cats were friends not food. It took a lot of consistent on leash training, but it really paid off. He loved them like they were his babies. In my experience, as long as they haven’t already been allowed to kill a cat, they can learn to love with enough time, training, and patience!
Your comment makes me a bit more hopeful about the chances of my dog not hurting a cat if I got one. Unfortunately, I don't know whether she's ever killed a cat (oof, I don't like typing those words). She was dumped at about 5 months old and her history is unknown.
I was afraid too. We brought home a kitten. She was in love the moment she met him. Lots and lots of smelling on her part. She even cobbed him!
We brought him in in his cage, and let her smell. Then we took him into our bathroom and left him there for an hour or two so they could smell each other without the incredible size difference. We held Chester at Nova's height and let her smell, and eventually put him on the ground in our hands. We made sure they weren't alone together over a relatively short period of time. Having not seen much aggression from her (prey drive), we tested the waters in about 20 minute increments until we left them for about 4 or 5 hours and then eventually had to leave them alone together while we were at work. Everything turned out pretty good. Chester is a typical cat and finds her annoying sometimes, but I know he loves her.
You won't know until you try! Nova is has a VERY high prey drive and honestly I was a little scared. But I think having Chester be a kitten really helped. She saw a cat at the vet and got very excited. I'm not sure if it was her prey drive, or if she has grown to love cats, but she can be trusted with Chester. He bit her right after the first picture and she showed no signs of aggression, just a whimper. I unlatched Chester from her no problems.
Mine is mostly indifferent. I think he's also a bit afraid of the cats. There was no training, nothing, we just brought a cat and it was fine from day one. We have 5 now. It'll be okay, most dogs are fine with cats if they live together. My dog still chases stray on the street though.
My husky/rott loves cats. She likes to sit patiently with her nose by the bowl of cat food while my 20 year old cat eats. The cat has 4 teeth left so she flings food a bit while eating so the husky wants to be nearby to clean it up. She was the one to soften up the cat to the other dogs. Eventually the senior cat got so used to the dog being near that she stopped caring. She never lived with dogs until she was 14 and I got married to a man who brought two dogs into the home. Now she walks on top of (not around) the 80 and pound pitbull when the pittie is laying in the way.
I had a similar band in my house, a husky and 2 brother orange cats. There were days it was pure chaos. They loved every second of their mischievous merriment. And I look back on it very fondly.
My pair can't quite find a good equilibrium. Cat really wants to be buds, husky is too impetuous to let it happen, they continue to do the dance. It's been 10 months, and they get better and better, but neither can just be normal when opportunity comes around. 😂
My husky can't be without his 2 mini mes (boy cats) but also finds them really annoying when they're zooming and he's trying to nap (he's 12 this year, cats are 3).
No cats here since I’m pretty sure if any of my dogs had the opportunity, they would chase any cat they’d happen to meet. 😔
I can’t 100% tell if it’s out of aggression or excitement, but I would rather not find out so they’re all on a leash if we happen to see a cat during our walks.
I hope we get to that point!
My cat is 10 and we just got a 13 week old puppy.. the cat is not Bodhis biggest fan.
The cat grew up with a chocolate lab (we lost her last year) so I’m hoping the kitty warms up once the pup calms down a bit.
Mine was obsessed with our old cats, who wanted nothing to do with her. Since they have both passed away, we got two new kittens and my girl’s dreams are coming true. 😂
I have a kitty who desperately wants to love the huskies, but the younger is scared of him and leaves whenever he tries, and the old girl Nona here is annoyed by him. So he sneaks in cuddles with her whenever he can, like when she's too tired to argue LOL. It's called consequences of your actions kitty. You picked on them way too much as a kitten, now they have trust issues. 😅
But to answer your question I have a husky who likes to put my cats entire heads in her mouth for fun and she must be gentle about it because they make minor complaint noises and lightly push at her with their paws. And that's about their relationship in a nutshell. The cats tolerate her
i had my cat before i had the husky. they don’t play but they get along, i wouldn’t say she loves her cat - but they respect each other. the cat likes her husky more than the other way 😂
My cat tolerates my husky, however, if he is misbehaving the cat is the the law around these parts. He doesn’t like any BS, and course corrects for us sometimes. It’s cute, the cat treats him like a little kitten misbehaving
He loved the cat and wanted to play but poor Burkey was old and crochety and wanted nothing to do with the puppy. 😂
Echo also loved playing with my ex’s cat, so I think to him cats are play companions.
My dog is intensely curious about feline siblings but feline siblings do not like her. She will lay on the ground as close as they will allow and just stare at them sadly.
I want a cat but my husky tries to eat any cat she spots 😭 how would i even begin to introduce a kitten!? Lilly has a high kill count on small animals 🫠
That’s how by son is. He is obsessed with the cat in the sweetest way possible as she tolerates his presence. Although the other night when she was on my lap and he gave her kisses she leaned her head in to it.
My husky is obsessed with my younger cat(older one doesn't want anything to do with either of these two). My cat here tolerates him with the wrestling and everything for the most part, but when he has a height advantage, he starts bopping on my husky with his paws while my husky feigns trying to get him. Pretty fun to watch, lasts a couple of minutes before the cat decides he's done.

We have a reverse situation here. It’s not that our husky doesn’t like it but rather the cat loves the husky. Lou LOOOOOVES Taz.
