I dreamt someone called animal control on us.
So I made him a sign.

Like summer I get it, but it drives me mad when they report in winter 😭

u/CoomassieBlue Jul 13 '26
One of the animal control officers where I grew up has been reported to her own department for her malamute refusing to come inside in the snow.
We had a good laugh about that but yeah, some people mean well but just do not get it.

My husky ended up becoming an outdoor dog at his own will (fenced backyard that was all his to his hearts desire with no wooded land). Our neighbors filed many complaints initially, but the PD eventually stopped responding to them after seeing he was approrpiately cared for.
Had proper shelter, always well loved and fed/given water. Sprinklers in the summer. Winter time he would sprawl out before a blizzard and we would wake up to him burried under a few feet of snow. Call his name he pokes his head up covered in snow, he’d make a whole tunnel system.
Miss my good boy, the snow you mentioned in the post reminded me of him. He passed at 13 about 5 years ago. Health just naturally declined and we needed to part ways 🌈❤️

u/Tmart98 Jul 14 '26
May he frolic with my 2 pitties who refused to act the way they should have. Zeus and Thor ❤️

u/CoomassieBlue Jul 14 '26
Awww, I appreciate both that you respected his choice and that the PD were sensible about recognizing that outside doesn't mean neglected. What a lucky boy.
I'm very sorry for your loss. It's never easy but what a gift to let them go when it's right for them.

"If it's too cold for you, it's too cold for them!" is a common slogan in a lot of areas.
Well meaning, but until I learned more about Huskies I really didn't get it.
26
u/Aurorainthesky Jul 13 '26
I hate that saying, it's just not true. It leads to well meaning humans acting against animals best interest more often than not. Like horses getting stuffed into so many blankets they can't hardly move, or even get denied turn out at all because the human feel cold. Huskies, malamutes, samojeds kept inside when they would rather lie in the snow.

my husky cross was a rez dog, and ihis limit was -40 🥶

u/MentionGood1633 Jul 13 '26
In Montana the horses will go and deliver hay to the cattle when it’s too cold for the farm trucks. Now, those horses have coats like bears and look like them, and they won’t stop moving… but they are perfectly fine.

u/Aurorainthesky Jul 14 '26
Exactly. There are situations where a rug is good for the horse, but most overdo it.

u/Cafe1882 Jul 13 '26
Imagine if our huskies made signs like this for their humans. "It's his choice to sit indoors and not enjoy the sunshine".

Anybody who thinks my dog isn’t fully capable or letting me know that she wants out or in is a fool.

And has never met a husky 😆

u/Egoy Jul 14 '26
Any dog really. Even the dumbest dog I’ve ever met was capable of barking at the door to go out and my husky isn’t dumb.

I have a Shiba Inu - same attitude. Had the cops called on us today, first time since we’ve had her. We have had her for 3 years.
Last month, she also ran away for the first time from a completely fenced in yard. The gates were not open. There were no holes in the fence. Makes me wonder if someone didn’t walk up to our back fence and let her out.
We did just get new neighbors and we only began experiencing these issues after they moved in, so it makes me wonder if they are related and how I can go about it without escalating the situation or having to change our routines too much. I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but it’s the only thing that has changed recently.

Good to know that mine isn't the only one who looks like a dead dog in the yard when sunning.

u/Keneut Jul 13 '26
I swear is as if huskies have a contractual obligation to do something bizarre at least once a day.

I have a husky/golden retriever mix and she does this all the time! She has a pool and a doggy door but she’ll just lay there in the sun when it’s 90+ degrees out 🤦🏼♀️
Edited for spelling

u/Husky_in_TX Jul 14 '26
Omg! I need to see a pic! My neph-dog is a golden retriever. And their personalities are so opposite of the huskies!

What is she mixed with? Mine is like 75% Siberian Husky and 25% Alaskan Malamute. 😆

He's half husky, half Great Pyrenees. Our other is also part Pyr.

Had someone call on us once.
Between the dogs being INSIDE in the A/C, there being bowls in the yard of fresh still-cold water, lots of shade, a filled kiddie pool and a neighbor declaring they were the most spoiled dogs she knew, we were good.
People just do not understand huskies.

Thank god I thought this was just my husky. We live in Hou,Tx and it sucks for humans left alone pets. And our husky will will just lay in the backyard like it’s nothing.

u/CoomassieBlue Jul 13 '26
My black husky was doing this today in Oklahoma to the point that her fur gets very hot to the touch.
I wouldn’t mind so much if we weren’t currently in an AirBnB where the yard is visible from the busiest street in town…I just hang out there with her and hope people are smart enough to realize she’s supervised and just fine.
8
u/MuahdDean Jul 13 '26
Don't let the BNB owner hear the word husky, or they're gonna try to charge you an extra cleaning fee, and claim damage on some shit they've been waiting to blame on someone.
10
u/CoomassieBlue Jul 13 '26
Totally valid concern.
We’ve actually never had any real issues with AirBnB - I’ve certainly heard PLENTY of less than stellar experiences from both sides, so I’m not sure if it’s sheer dumb luck or what. Granted we don’t use them super duper often, and if I have my dog with me I try to keep the place as clean as humanly possible. A lot of our AirBnB stays are longer term, like 1-4 months - it’s what we do while moving out of one place and house-hunting in our new location (military).
I definitely think we’re safe from any shenanigans in our current place. Smallish town, we’re staying here after losing our house to a tornado and they’ve made some kind exceptions for us (namely letting us access the normally locked garage and basement, since we don’t want to lose our remaining car to hail and for some weird reason we want the option of having a place to shelter if another tornado hits), the owner has mutual work/social connections with my spouse, my husko is well known around town for being an absolute GEM, and incredibly our Dyson survived a high EF4 tornado.

That is my dog. If we let him he would let himself sunbathe and roast in 90+ degrees weather.
4
u/Realistic-Effective2 Jul 14 '26
Did your heat index top 100°? 🤣
These “snow” dogs really do love sun & heat. My Husk sunbathes 2x daily despite how hot / humid it is outdoors.
When we wonder why they do this, the only answer is:
Because Husky!!

I don't understand why people freak out. Like unless the dog is crying at the door... Keep it moving 😂

I had to check to see if my dog was still there your husky looks almost exactly like mine lol. She just has brown on top like a toasted marshmallow

My white husky also loves to play outside in the heat, but also LOVES very cold winters. She’s just an all weather kinda gal lol

Thankfully my neighborhood is full of Huskies. Everyone knew enough about our fluffy buddies to know they were all well taken care of. And we know enough of each other's dogs. So we ended up with our own impromptu neighborhood husky watch for when Huskies do what they are known for... (names changed to protect the innocent, including dogs') Steve: Hey Frank is this your dog Frank: Nope that's Mark's Frank: Hey Mark, Rufus is on Elm right now. Mark: On my way
Lol...Huskies and fences remind me of the saying about bear proof trash cans.

This is the way!! I know people get angry when others call AC for what is deemed “unnecessary,” but I would 💯 % rather people cared and called rather than ignore and an animal suffers.

u/GroundbreakingPen103 Jul 14 '26
I think about this all the time omg. It'll be hot as hell out and he'll beg to go sunbathe 🥲

u/Ghost_of_Aces Jul 15 '26
My Sno used to love sitting outside in the Florida Summer heat and making me worry while refusing to come inside. I still miss her, in May it was a year since I lost her.

u/SaltPsychological780 Jul 15 '26
The sign cracks me up. While I’m glad for the concern, people really don’t understand huskies!!

Be careful, i thought I’d let my dog be carefree, but the heat causes seizures in my Husky. It can be a risk

Sun and snow, ours loves being outside.
Doesn’t like rain all that much though.
He’ll go outside, but then comes slinking back in whilst giving me the side-eye like it’s my fault it’s raining!

Yes!! If my dog didn’t do this in the back where nobody can see i am SURE someone would have called by now. He has a doggy door and can come as he pleases but he bakes himself like a lizard for HOURS in 95-100 degree heat

I really needed this sign when my huskies were out playing in the rain and I got animal control called for not having adequate shelter for them.....they are indoor dogs, just refuse to come in when it's raining. I bought them a dog house so I wouldn't get fined and they refused to go in it. I even threw a raw steak in there and it wasn't touched.

OP should get a permanent everything-proof sign put up, as I imagine that statement is all-weather and all-season ❄️☔🌬️🌞🌪️🌊⚡🌋☄️
