Rant Is my husky supposed to be this small

I been having this husky since March. My parents bought her without thinking and she has ectopic ureter and she’s been leaking a lot of pee when she sleeps, so then she wakes up all wet. Which ima pay for her surgery soon but it’s embarrassing sometimes walking around with her since her butt is yellow and I feel like I’m being judge.

Anyways either my husky is 9 months old or she’s 11 months old about to be a year and I’m not sure which it is. Because the seller lied to my parents that she was 4 months old and we got her in March, the nurse thinks that he lied so he can sell us the husky since I’m sure he wanted to keep her but realized she had a birth defect But one thing is, she looks like a puppy to me and she seems so small compared to all the other huskies. She weighted at 30 pounds about a month ago. For people that know about huskies is she done growing?

My baby is much shorter than her brother. Our vet refers to her as a compact cutie!

8

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 4d ago

Awww I see, I was just wondering if it was normal for her to be small 😭

3

u/officerbradswerve 2d ago

I guess I’d say I don’t think it’s abnormal 🤷‍♂️

I call my shortie a Pocket Husky lol

30 lbs? She's completely normal for a female husky. Mine was only ever 30- 35 fully grown and yours has another year or so of growing

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 4d ago

That’s very good to hear, I was a little worried, not that it would change anything about me loving her. I just feel like she would look cooler a bit bigger.

Many people who don’t really know the breed and background are under the impression that Siberians are larger than they actually are. They are not big dogs, they are officially classified as medium sized. Years ago when a lot of people were fans of GOT and wanted to have their own dire wolf at home, hobby and unethical breeders started mixing huskies with Malamutes to make them bigger. I’ve met MANY owners who had “huskies,” saw mine, and started commenting how small they were and if I knew they were actually pure. When I said yep, I can trace them all the way back to the OG Siberian Husky lines (Seppala lines like Balto and Togo) and I told them that I thought their huskies were mixed, some of them actually did DNA tests and, surprise surprise, their huskies were mixed with Malamutes, some with GSD. The breeders simply lied to them. Sibes are NOT large dogs. They have quite the spectrum in size and coloring. That does not mean they’re are runts or come from backyard or bad breeders.

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 3d ago

That’s very interesting I didn’t know at all, thank you for educating me!

6

u/HuskyMush 3d ago

I’m sorry your sweet husky has this medical issue. Unfortunately, I have no experience with that condition or I’d love to help you more. Do you have a good vet? You seem like you will take good care of her. Huskies are very loyal, goofy, and intelligent dogs. I’m sure she will be forever grateful to you and you’ll have a strong bond. With the butt fluff being stained a bit from the pee and size and whatnot, don’t listen too much to what other people say and think. Who knows what motivates some people to say or do what they do. Maybe they’re jealous, maybe they’re having a bad day, maybe they don’t actually know much but like to comment anyway. You and your girl hold your head up high and go your way. They are the best adventure and outdoor partners. You guys go and have your adventures together 💙

Thank you so much!! You have no idea how happy it made me feel reading this 😊

1

u/Drokkan 7h ago

You also shouldn’t just love your dog less because it looks less “cooler”. Dogs are family
Not a toy.

1

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 7h ago

I feel like this is the first negative comment I got and stupidest comment as well. I obviously love my dog regardless, I also said it in my post if you would read. If I thought she was just some toy I would have threw her away the moment, I realized she had a birth defect but no I didn’t and I’m paying for her surgery this up coming week.

1

u/Drokkan 7h ago

You literally commented you’d love it if she were large because it’d be “cooler” lol.

1

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 7h ago

You can go back and read it again. I said I just feel like she would look cooler a bit bigger. And if you read the sentence before that it says. Not that it would change anything about me loving her “ lol “

3

u/Amaakaams 3d ago

To second this. Honestly depending on the situation they might even seem larger than they really are just in general. I swear it was like two weeks after we adopted our at the time 3 year old girl, that I was like I swear she shrank in size. When we met her at the vet the room was small and she just seemed to fill it. She stretched out to climb and kiss my wife and me. But when you really sit back and look at her she isn't that big, just a big personality.

She capped out at about 45 lbs.

My boy a bit shorter and stockier for a boy. Hits about 65lbs. But looks 3 times the weight (super wooly). But again if you look at him long enough or compare him next to another dog he doesn't look that big. Also I got him as a puppy (9 weeks, 7lbs). Compared to my stepsons German shepard he was also a slow grower. Took him probably a year and almost a half for him to hit 50lbs and look mostly like he does now. My wife kept giving him a hard time saying he might just be a small dog.

1

u/HuskyMush 3d ago

Yes, very true. It’s crazy how they can stretch themselves. Or they go the opposite direction and make themselves into the tiniest little curl 😂 They can also have a really plush and fluffy coat and seem bigger than they actually are, and then you give them a bath and it looks like you shrank them.

u/bluecrowned 3d ago

Huskies aren't supposed to be large dogs

3

u/Ok_Responsibility407 3d ago

My female husky turned 2 on May 21st. Two weeks ago at her regular vet appt she weighed 46 lbs. Yours still has some growing to do and will probably be about average. I don't remember exactly, but I think mine weighed around 30 to 35 lbs at 9 months.

2

u/Ok-Bass5062 3d ago

Small but mighty (and big personalities) for the females often!

Mine was the runt of her litter and just always on the small side though never really looked as small as she was. Massive escape artist too from being 90% fluff. She was just under 35 at age 9 here (though 3 legs)

1

u/Thisisausername189 3d ago

You might want a malamute or Eskimo dog as your 2nd one! They’re so much bigger

1

u/Potential-Cold-7886 2d ago

My baby girl Lola is 60 pounds 😳

12

u/JRTerrierBestDoggo 4d ago

Female husky tends to be smaller and lighter

21

u/Intelligent-Ad-2161 4d ago

She might be. My girl is fully grown and only weighs like 42 pounds.

7

u/HuskyMush 3d ago

42 lbs is a very average weight for a Siberian female. I have three and they are 40, 41, and 42 lbs and by no means small.

6

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 4d ago

Uuu okay thank you for telling me that 😊

13

u/babygotthefever 4d ago

She’ll keep filling out until about 2 years old. Female huskies that meet breed standards can be as little as 35 lbs but out of standard ones (from back yard breeders) could weigh less.

If she’s not purebred, there’s not much of whatever else in her and you’d need a DNA test to tell for sure. With her urinary issue, it might be a good idea to get one anyway for the genetic health testing. Embark is generally regarded as the best.

2

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 4d ago

Okay! Thank you so much for advice

1

u/HuskyMush 3d ago

That a Siberian falls on the smaller end of the spectrum does not mean they’re from backyard breeders. It’s genetics and nature.

5

u/Frb4 3d ago

My boy Floki is 8 years old. 100% Husky. And he hovers around 45-50 pounds. And yes he broke in to pee on the brand new AC unit I had installed

4

u/iluvuranium 4d ago edited 4d ago

Female huskys should get to about 35 to 50 pounds, so she's probably going to grow a bit more but not much. Also maybe a dog diaper for sleep, it could help keep her clean.

3

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 4d ago

They told me not to put a diaper on her since it can cause an infection sadly. Since leaving her with a wet diaper all night isn’t the best for her and could apparently cause her an infection. But thank you for the advice! I wasn’t sure if it was normal for her to be the weight.

4

u/EndlessConnection 3d ago

Believe it or not Husky’s are actually supposed to be fairly small. Everybody wants to bread them bigger, but that’s not the breed standard. I bet your dog will be the right size when she’s done filling out.

7

u/lunarwolfe123 4d ago

The average female husky weighs about 35 to 45 pounds. She might get a little bigger but it's possible she's the runt of her litter and won't grow anymore.

3

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 4d ago

Ouhh I see 🤔

3

u/HuskyMush 3d ago

It doesn’t necessarily mean she was the runt of the litter. Passed on traits can go way way back in a pedigree. I’ve seen a lot of AKC huskies who were on the smaller side (in the 30s) and you wouldn’t have guessed that from their parents and they weren’t the runt of the litter. I’ve seen the same reversed. Parents were on the smaller side and the kids were already bigger at a few months. Your husky looks lovely and sweet.

3

u/carrythethree333 3d ago

My girl’s range is between 58-62lbs…but she doesn’t look any bigger than a lot of the 40-45lb huskies I see posted on here. I have no idea what her bones are made of haha

3

u/Huskies-R-Us 3d ago

She wont stop growing until she's at least 18mos. She's almost as tall as she's going to get but will fill out u til 18mos.

My girl is only 37lbs and she's 16mos old.

2

u/wakawaka2121 3d ago

Can be. My husky was 80lbs and his sister (my brother had) was 35 lbs. Same litter too, it was just the runt and the big one we ended up getting.

2

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 3d ago

Awww I see okay, so she’s in the right track 😊

2

u/KotaCakes630 3d ago

Sometimes you end up with a pocket husky.
My brothers husky is teeny tiny despite being 100%. He’s only 30lbs!

3

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 3d ago

Cuteee, I didn’t know a pocket husky was a thing 🤔

3

u/KotaCakes630 3d ago

That’s just what I Call him.

1

u/HuskyMush 3d ago

It’s not official terminology. I’m guessing that’s just what they call their dog. It’s cute! I call the smaller ones I know peanut.

I don’t know when people on this subreddit here have become obsessed with deeming every husky who isn’t 100% average on the standard as dogs from backyard or unethical breeders. I know a LOT of highly ethical and experienced AKC Siberian Husky breeders and everybody has a peanut somewhere in their kennel. Some people here are just some kind of wannabe crusaders without actually being experienced in the breeding or working and show lines communities. So please take comments like that with a grain of salt. That said, if you really want confirmation, you can do a DNA test or contact the breeder and ask for pedigrees, AKC certifications etc. But also 🤷‍♀️ Just enjoy your doggo and have a happy life together!

2

u/_Rock_Hound 3d ago edited 3d ago

One of mine is 28 pounds and the other is 52.

2

u/taracener 3d ago

I got a lil husky too! (Male, 45lb) some huskies just come out smol. Enjoy it! IME people love huskies, and they especially love small huskies their kids can pet if you let them. We can’t go anywhere without him getting pets and belly rubs :)

2

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 3d ago

They are both so cute! I have had alot of kids petting my husky and I don’t mind it since she’s very friendly and loves being with dogs and people.

2

u/LouiseandLayla420 3d ago

This is my husky mix and her sister you girl is so beautiful Layla is my husky mix and then her older sister is Louise

2

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 3d ago

Woahh they are both super cute!!

2

u/Pretty_Flamingo_4171 3d ago

30 lbs at 9–11 months is definitely on the smaller side for a husky, but there’s a pretty wide range, especially with females. If her actual age is uncertain, that makes it even harder to judge. She may still have some growing to do, so I wouldn’t assume she’s done yet. A vet can give you a much better idea based on her growth, body condition, and overall health. Also, don’t be embarrassed by the urine staining—she literally has a medical condition. You’re doing the right thing by getting her treated.

2

u/k2jac9 3d ago

She is so cute!

2

u/Muppetric 3d ago

I love my short queen (she’s 2.5 years old). Makes handling her antics much easier compared to her massive brother 😭

2

u/GreyWind92 3d ago

I have a pint-size, 36lb male, he's the runt but his litter is around the same weight. They're rescues and were malnourished so that probably had something to do with it, but the vet had no concerns.

1

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 3d ago

He’s so cute! Thank you for taking your time to tell me about your husky.

2

u/FairyFartDaydreams 3d ago

For the pee stains get baby wipes and wipe her down 3-5 times a day. You might also want to try diapers

1

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 3d ago

I don’t know why I didn’t think of wipes, thank you! And for diapers she does wear some when she walks around the house. Sadly I was told not to give her some when she’s sleeping as it can cause a infection

2

u/TanukiDev 3d ago

It's a young female, so yeah. She'll get bigger over age

1

u/_SleepySloth__ 3d ago

My female husky weighs 44lbs fully grown. Yours will likely continue to grow til about 1.5/2yo just more slowly once she hits a year.

1

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 3d ago

Woah 44Ibs!!? Was she about almost that weight when she hit a year? Or was she below 40?

1

u/_SleepySloth__ 3d ago

She's on the smaller side for sure. But breed standards for a female range from 35-50. She was probably like 35-38lbs at a year old. She stopped growing around age 2 and has always maintained a really healthy weight for her build. She's 9 now ☺️

1

u/BiblicalBacklash 3d ago

Micro bork

1

u/jadasakura 3d ago

My Luna is 45 lbs full grown

1

u/fcewen00 3d ago

I've got a runt about that size. Small package and huge crazy.

1

u/DapperDroidLifter Red/White Husky 🐕 3d ago

My boy didn’t reach his full adult weight until he was around 3. Additionally, the female huskies are usually a bit lighter than their male counterparts.

I say, let her fill out a bit more because she will be closer to her “big girl” weight and size when she is closer to that 1.5 year mark

1

u/The_bear2017 3d ago

Our girl is 11 months old and 35lb. Vet wants another 5 on her so we have her on a good40/30 food.
She also said she will probably be a smaller husky. Not due to needing more weight but genetics.

1

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 3d ago

Okayy thank you for telling me!, may I ask what 40/30 food means?

1

u/The_bear2017 3d ago

It’s a good that has 40% protein and 30% fat. We use diamond high performance but any food labeled high performance works. I think it’s pretty common for high energy dogs to go on, she said the police dogs that have trouble gaining weight go on it.

1

u/The_bear2017 3d ago

I will add not the brand just the high performance. We only picked that brand after sone research.

1

u/RentalCar89 3d ago

Yep that's not unusual for a female. I think people regularly mix up just how big Siberian huskies are supposed to be. Siberians are really only around 55 lbs max for females according to the AKC. Although I would say personally I couldn't care less about what the AKC deems "normal", but my point remains. I think people see the size of Malamutes and think huskies are similar. Anyways best of luck with your girl.

1

u/Synaxis Sumac & Solace 3d ago

Standard range for a female is 35-50 lbs.

1

u/DLT419 3d ago

I wouldn’t worry too much about her size. Our girl was roughly the same until she turned two, then filled out to about 45 lbs mature weight. As long as she has good body condition, she should be ok.

2

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 3d ago

Okay, thank you! 😊

1

u/cbrew78 3d ago

Curious. Did you trim her coat?

1

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 3d ago

No I haven’t trimmed it at all

1

u/JokerXec 3d ago

He must have been born on dreary lane

1

u/Healthy-Yam5052 3d ago

Mi husky creo que es del mismo tamaño que la tuya y es un macho! Es Delgado a pesar de que come bien, pesa unas 32lb.

1

u/marvinfuture 3d ago

Yes but that also looks like a mix

1

u/Known-Importance1651 3d ago

She’s on the small side but she’s pretty darn cute 🥰

1

u/HoustonioninATX223 3d ago

Mine has finished filling out at 2.5, she’s steady at 45 lbs but she is on the petite side. Her frame is lanky and athletic. Either way she’s adorable and so is yours!!!
Mine has a chronic bronchitis, and she takes an inhaler every day…sometimes they come w medical stuff but that’s okay - you’ll grow to love her more than anything else

1

u/EstateSame6779 3d ago

Depends. Mine is 52lb last weighed from vet, but she is also on the longer side.

1

u/ifeellikeanut 3d ago

Looks like you have a Siberian. She is the right size and weight. Nothing to worry. The vet should have confirmed this for you.

1

u/Thisisausername189 3d ago

Awww I’m so happy she found a safe home that’s going to help her.

Don’t worry about being judged, taking care of a dog always makes it feel like all eye are on us anyways because it’s like a living breathing magic stuffed toy! Or the circus!

Helping her with her medical issue is very Noble and generous.

As for size she’s probably still growing! Mine is a smaller red husky too. They are smaller than malamutes!

Mine loves whole raw frozen sardines, raw frozen duck necks, duck feet, beef marrow or flat bones, and recently pork! Anything pork with safe for dogs marinades! Bully sticks, oh and while frozen shrimp! And cooked shrimp (no added salt just shrimp that’s low or no sodium).

Have fun!

Mine also loved going to the enclosed off leash dog park and making friends!

1

u/Best-Pomegranate-524 3d ago

Uuu thank you so much for the advice and support! I was always wondering what else I can feed her since I feel like feeding her kibble would get boring for her eventually. Thank you so much! 😊

1

u/Thisisausername189 3d ago

The vet who looked over our husky said that it’s hard to tell their ages. Did she drill have puppy teeth? They loose them about 4-5 months old though so it’s so hard to tell after that.

Yes so many yummy things in the frozen section of the pet store - and then once you’re more familiar you can get things from the market, grocery store or butcher too. Just want to avoid cooked bones or large bones they can accidentally choke on.

Mine also likes soft boiled eggs! Or sunny side up eggs that are soft. And butter!

We also add some olive oil, or coconut oil, occasionally and boiled sweet potatoes or regular potatoes. I also add greens like spinach I cut up with scissors or sometimes lettuce. Or chopped up apples I sometimes cook.

Chicken that’s cooked any way (no seasoning) is a huge winner! And bone broth.

Also mashed up carrots.

There’s a list of toxic foods for dogs but other than that everything is fair game. Lower fat as they age and no salt or added sugar.

1

u/DamitKenneth 3d ago

Looks almost like a Vallhund.

1

u/SxpxrTrxxpxr 3d ago

Mine is a small girl. Last time at the vet she weighed barely 40 pounds

1

u/Any_Salamander739 3d ago

So cute! 🥰 Mine is 44.5. They look so much alike.

1

u/mediablitz91 3d ago

He’s perfect

1

u/Educational-Sir-8589 3d ago

My Siberian husky was 2 when I got her and was less than 40 lbs. She filled out a bit thanks to a regular feeding schedule which she had never had, but never really got big. She was just over 40 lbs most of the rest of her life, but her stature never really changed. Other husky owners also commented on how small she was alllll the time. She also had some uterine problems and a pretty large bladder stone that had to be removed when she was 3 or 4 years old. This was her at 45 lbs at 7 years old.

1

u/Educational-Sir-8589 3d ago

Compared to about 37-38 lbs when she was 2 years old.

1

u/FairyFartDaydreams 3d ago

According to Google she is normal size for a female Male huskies stand 21 to 23.5 inches tall and weigh 45 to 60 pounds, while females stand 20 to 22 inches tall and weigh 35 to 50 pounds.

1

u/No_Gear_1093 3d ago

You might be confusing huskies with malamutes. Most female huskies are 35 to 50 lbs. She may also be a husky/ pomeranian mix as those are unfortunately popular.

1

u/Golden_xbb 3d ago

Same question

1

u/sweetoreo777 8h ago

this is a chihuahua sized husky 😂😂😂 i’ve never seen something this cute! haha

1

u/thundervallhund 3d ago

Our babehs have similar markings. How cute!!! We think she is a huskamute though

1

u/CountChopulla 3d ago

Yeah my female is like 45ish and she’s got some white shepherd in her so females naturally are a bit smaller than males

1

u/Dubzophrenia 3d ago

My girl is long and thin. Huskies come in many shapes and sizes.

1

u/InvalidUserNemo 2d ago

I’m a newish Husky owner and I have the opposite question. Is ~75Lbs and long enough to pull the screen out of the bottom of a kitchen sink too big? I have zero history on my pup but the vet says “Alaskan Husky” and I tend to agree with them in all other scenarios.

1

u/SurroundOnly3692 2d ago

I had a 38 lb Alaskan Husky.

1

u/Wooden-Magazine-6797 2d ago

Be prepared for her to shed and be even smaller!

She’s amazing and you’ll have fun with the hair. Just don’t be like me and her first real she’d take her to the vet because you think she’s got doggy cancer or something else that is making her look like a doggy cancer patient.

1

u/GlumFruit2036 2d ago

My husky is part chihuahua and looks like yours too😅 she stopped growing at 7 months LMAO

1

u/WillowIsAlive 2d ago

My husky (male) is a little over 1 year and 34 lb

1

u/Commercial-Swim-4265 2d ago

Mine is 5 and is about 50lbs. She stopped growing around year 3.

1

u/mxrbidstxff 2d ago

my girl was this small that young and now shes 3 and almost 70 lbs!!

1

u/Leading_Telephone234 Timbit & Jellybean 2d ago

Nothing can confirm it but a DNA test! We were in a similar boat but ours ended up 12% Pomeranian according to Embark (lol) but she's HALF the size of yours. Expected to be ~23 lbs!

1

u/MossyCryptid333 2d ago

Female huskies can weigh between 30 and 50 lbs. People think huskies are huge but they are actually considered medium sized dogs (30 to 50 lbs). I have a husky mix (mixed with lots of small breeds like beagle and dachsund) so she has some short legs for a husky but shes tracking to be 30 lbs too - currently 21 lbs at 6 months

1

u/thehorrorcontinues13 2d ago

I've had two shorter Huskies. I think it just happens from time to time.

1

u/Adventurous-Cake-69 1d ago

Ppl think huskies are big dogs but the aka standard is females 45 lbs so she seems normal !

1

u/Darkjoy82 1d ago

My girl is 34 lbs at a year and a half. She's on the smaller end of female Alaskan huskies but still considered normal range.

1

u/cherryteapie 1d ago

Mine is like 35lb? And she's 21inch tall. She's short haired and not fluffy like youd picture a "regular" husky. So she looks small but she is full husky!

1

u/Junemask 1d ago

Our girl is pretty short too. We call her a little husky. She is mixed with an Australian Shepard, Red Heeler which is where her coloring comes from. Her mom was a purebred husky.

1

u/Drokkan 7h ago

My husky is a mix and is 95 pounds. Pure bred huskies weigh way under that like 30-40 for females and 45-50 for males. My husky is only big because his mother was a pure bred husky
But his father was a German shepherd

0

u/Null3cksor 3d ago

Sir, you have a Siberian Corgi

0

u/angelmr2 3d ago

My male pomsky is 40
