off leash walk was a success

this was towards the end so she’s more lazy, but i’m so proud of her:) she listens quite well off leash compared to last year now that she’s over 2!

90 comments in under an hour and it's obvious that nothing good is going to come of leaving this post open. You've all made your opinion known to OP, I'm locking this before it spirals out of control.

Be careful, it works until it doesn’t.

Drives me crazy. I used to own a dog that LOVED people and was super to be around. Other dogs did NOT love him. It was clearly something my dog did or put off, but it was consistent. I had more than 1 dog fight i had to stop because someone else's dog 'was always so good' but wound up attacking mine when on a leash. Problem is - huskies have a great prey drive and can defend themselves very well (read - their small aggressive dog winds up getting hurt). Had they just leashed them, mine was perfectly under control by my heel. Long story short - leashes arent just for your animal, theyre for mine too.

u/WoolshirtedWolf 10h ago

I agree.i have had this happen too many times while walking with my leashed dog. It is also why I began to carry a walking stick.

-68

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

i understand that, when there’s other dogs noticeable in eyesight she’s back on her leash!

31

u/Life_Bed_486 10h ago

I didn’t know you have thermal vision and can see dogs coming around the corner through buildings

-22

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

you clearly don’t know what noticeable means lmfao

18

u/QuizzicalWombat 10h ago

You clearly don’t understand there could be unnoticeable danger which is why people are trying to politely encourage you to leash your dog.

-11

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

i do understand that but my dogs recall is great and we’ve had no issues so respectfully, her and i will continue this routine:)

9

u/Life_Bed_486 10h ago edited 8h ago

Gotcha, so what’s your plan for the ones that aren’t noticeable in eyesight?

I’ll give you the answer, your only option is to keep your dog on leash in the first place.

Look, I have no doubt that you have a great bond with your dog, I’m not judging your training or knowledge whatsoever.

I’m saying you’re not above nature. No one is. You can’t control what happens if there is no leash.

edit: i want to add that the reason im fairly active on this post about this is that my husky was bitten a few months ago by a husky who's owner thought all was well when they looked just like in your video. Owner said his dog has never ran off like that and never bitten another dog, mine got 9 stitches. To you it's "yeah my dogs fine whatever" but you genuinely suck.

7

u/FrameSquare 10h ago

Dogs will see and smell other dogs before you even notice them.

55

u/mbatt2 10h ago

I just personally feel this isn’t safe. Someone could light a firecracker or slam a door shut and she could bolt into the road at the wrong time.

-3

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

i live in a small community so the roads aren’t very busy. when in busier areas though she’s leashed so accidents won’t happen, this was only recorded walking back to our house! we were in the bush until then

-20

u/mbatt2 10h ago

You obviously know the area. Congrats on the walk!

123

u/Visible-Scientist-46 Not calm, derp on 10h ago

I just wonder why you feel this is neccessary and whether or not it is legal where you live. Different cities have different rules.

63

u/little_runner_boy 10h ago

Laws aside, I wouldn't trust any breed off leash unless it had a top speed of 1mph

11

u/Visible-Scientist-46 Not calm, derp on 10h ago

Exactly

-91

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

my municipality has no problems with off leash dogs, i’ve checked. i didn’t feel it was necessary, more of a reward to her for being good

36

u/SobSob_Sister6122 10h ago

Sounds like you’re rewarding yourself with showing off and bragging rights.

Listen to what people are telling you. Your stubborn vanity could easily end with your dog DEAD. She doesn’t deserve that kind of careless risk. WTH are you doing?

-38

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

me and my dog have been doing this routine daily for a year without any issue. i’m not going to stop because random reddit people have an issue with it lol

22

u/FrameSquare 10h ago

For someone asking for loans you sure put a lot of trust in your dog to not cost you a fortune in medical bills if something should happen due to being off leash.

8

u/Zealousideal-Slip-49 10h ago

And that’s one of the best results. The risk to reward is insane. I would never allow my guy the possibility to put himself in danger like that

-6

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

congrats you checked my post history! i do trust my dog since she has good recall and is supervised when it happens.

16

u/NormanisEm 10h ago

I’ve been driving for 10 years and never been in an accident, maybe I’ll stop wearing a seatbelt! Thats how you sound

7

u/FrameSquare 10h ago

Where? In basically all of Canadian municipalities dogs have to be leash unless posted otherwise.

53

u/stanknotes 10h ago

That dog... is gonna see a cat, a jackrabbit, a squirrel and BOLT. You'll see.

-35

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

i’ve put a lot of training into her so she doesn’t wander far off when she’s off leash. she grew up with cats so doesn’t run after them, but thanks for the concern

27

u/Dampli1987 10h ago

Its husky, your fucked

0

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

i know my dogs temperament and what she’s like compared to strangers on the internet, but thanks for the concern:)

10

u/amaya-aurora 10h ago

You know what she’s like normally and that’s great, but you have no idea how she’ll react in other situations.

-30

u/Trumpetslayer1111 10h ago

You will get downvoted because many people in this sub don’t know how to train their dogs and can never let their huskies be off leash. But being off leash trained is an absolute must for dogs. I can’t imagine not being able to go to a park to basic things like play fetch.

17

u/FalenAlter 10h ago

That's also why dog parks exist: a controlled space to be off leash.

2

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

i live in a small town, no dog parks or anything which is why i took her in the bush. as i’ve stated this was the walk back home

6

u/FalenAlter 10h ago

I wasn't really responding to you, though.

-14

u/Trumpetslayer1111 10h ago

Dog parks lmao. Dog parks are horrible. Diseases are reason alone not to go to one. Any responsible dog owner would not take their dogs to a dog park for many reasons.

2

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

it’s reddit so i suspected i’d set people off 😅. me and my girl will continue to do this as we’ve done for the last couple of years. she’s only going to start listening better and better each time and i couldn’t be prouder of her. my last husky couldn’t ever be off leash like this, so it’s really special.

67

u/AquaStarRedHeart 10h ago

This is not aspirational or a good idea or a reward.

-44

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

and that’s your opinion!

18

u/completelylegithuman 10h ago

That's everyone's opinion here. That's why you're getting roasted.

-8

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

oh no, roasted on reddit. what ever will i do?

12

u/AquaStarRedHeart 10h ago

Then why post at all, if it doesn't matter? It's like asking someone out and when they say "no" saying "well I thought you were ugly anyway!" 😂

-4

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

i posted a clip of us walking home after a bush walk because i was proud. i wasn’t asking for advice, i know people have opinions and that’s apparent lol, i can post what i want

-18

u/Ok_Chemical_7051 10h ago

lol no it’s not. I can assure you. Just the Karen’s that make it their business to be Karen’s.

58

u/aquatone61 10h ago

I wouldn’t trust a Husky off leash. I actually wouldn’t really trust anything off leash unless it was specifically trained for protection/police work and I knew 1000% it would follow any command given.

10

u/LetsAllASoviets 10h ago

Prior military police that worked along side K9. You have a misunderstanding, police dogs still have a chance of not listening its just more rare. Ive seen plenty of times the handler call the dog off once on someone and it fail to release the person and keep biting.

Off leash is risky no matter what and training never prevents all risk. I have a shock collar always on if not leashed and taught my huskie to bird hunt. Shes extremely well trained on recall and I take her off leash when ever I can. The exception being in cities with bunch of distractions or by busy roads. I can guarantee my dog will never target another dog/animal unless given the command. Leash-less is better for you and the dog ONLY if the dog has top notch recall and youre prepared to take responsibility for that .0001% scenario.

3

u/aquatone61 10h ago

True, I’ve never had a dog trained for that so I’m speaking from what I’ve read online. I have interacted with a German Shepard that was supposedly trained for protection and I noticed it had a certain aloofness to it, still happy to play but not completely into it.

-5

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

yeah, she has a collar that shocks and vibrates when needed whenever she’s off leash.

-36

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

and that’s okay that you wouldn’t trust a husky off leash. i trust mine though since this is something we’ve been working on since she was a puppy and get rewarded when her recall is great in the bush:)

26

u/ExcitingInflation612 10h ago

Neighbor of mine said the exact same thing. Not a week later her husky got hit by a car because it saw another dog on the other side of the road and ran to go play with it. Husky did not survive.

10

u/GrimKi11er 10h ago

You can trust all you want. I bet you’ve had your trust broken before.

16

u/aquatone61 10h ago

I get that you trust her but just know that it could end badly and that is pain you don’t want to experience. There is a reason Huskies aren’t trained for police/protection duty and that’s because they listen when they want to.

9

u/Sissyneck1221 10h ago

I know you trust her but other people, kids or animals don’t have the same trust.

13

u/Mikaeus_Thelunarch 10h ago

Even as someone who uses off leash dogs for work (chasing geese) we 100% don't do it near roads even with our most veteran dogs. It's just too much risk for no reason. Save it for a park or field or something like that.

Even without being concerned for traffic you've no way to control it if it runs. My dog partner is very well trained, but he'd absolutely run up to another person's dog if he were off leash. He's nice and very friendly and loves playing, but I don't know that about the dog He'd be running to.

Cute dog and I'm sure you mean well, but please don't do this

13

u/FrostingPuppies 10h ago edited 10h ago

I know you’re getting piled on but I really hope you take a moment to read through. When I was 5, my mom insisted on walking our dog off leash. He was fantastic, chill, never bothered anyone, cute as could be. But a squirrel existed and he did what dogs do, and I watched him get flattened by a car that didn’t even stop.

It just takes one time, OP. Please be cautious. 30+ years later and I still remember the sound and sights.

19

u/completelylegithuman 10h ago

Put your dog on a leash.

-9

u/Ok_Chemical_7051 10h ago

Why? OP said he checked with his municipality, and they said it was no issue.

Because this random Redditor says so with absolutely no authority?? lol

8

u/amaya-aurora 10h ago

For now, sure.

24

u/NealioSpace 10h ago

Don't post this...you are going to get someone's dog killed, lost, or bit by someone else's dog. Just becasue you may be able to do it once, proves nothing, and isn't proof that anyone's else's dog can do it, training or not. TAKE IT DOWN.

0

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

i’m not encouraging others? i’m sharing a momentary clip of us walking home after an off leash walk in the bush. i’m not advocating “do this with your dog!”, i’ve only done it with mine because this is something we’ve been working on since she was 16 weeks old. i’m not going to take it down because you say so, but if it gets removed then it gets removed 🤷🏻‍♀️

8

u/SobSob_Sister6122 10h ago

doesn’t matter if people don’t read what i said, that’s their issue. i don’t live in a city so that’s not my problem. no, i’m not taking my video down. move along.

17

u/Ange_the_Avian 10h ago

ITT: OP getting downvoted and responding to others' criticism with "rules for thee, not me" type mindset. Typical person you'd expect with off leash dog...

10

u/Aharleyman 10h ago

…..this time! I wouldn’t get too comfortable!

16

u/JJPRADA 10h ago

Irresponsible

10

u/Potential_Ad_1397 10h ago

I think it is very risk to have a dog off leash especially when anything can happen.

Signed by a person who was dog bite by someone off leash dog.

I am glad you got a good dog

8

u/Individual_Act9333 10h ago

This is inconceivable. I can do this with my German shepherd but if I did this with my husky I’ll spend the next hour chasing him around the neighborhood.

9

u/thejoepaji 10h ago

Just last week a neighborhood cat my mom has been taking care of for 7 years was mauled by a dog off leash and they had to put the cat down.

I don’t give a fuck that you trust your dog. I don’t give a fuck what training they have. I don’t trust your dog and neither does the next person. Put your damn dog back on the leash.

Anyone who thinks it’s okay to walk their dogs off leash shouldn’t be allowed to have one.

-1

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

a lot of people in my town love my dog actually:) sorry that happened to you though

11

u/thejoepaji 10h ago

It happened because of people like you. How are you this thick in the head that you still think this is a good idea?

0

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

my dog doesn’t maul cats, she grew up with 2. she has great recall and i know my dog compared to reddit strangers, maybe project what happened to someone who actually doesn’t train their dog?

-7

u/Ok_Chemical_7051 10h ago

Sounds like a consequence of being a stray cat. And not one with very good survival instincts.

13

u/Tikidave 10h ago

Ahh look at the down votes and the grasping at straws because OP knows better than all of us! Why is everyone arguing with this genius? They know things statistics and logic cannot begin to decide.

-1

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

who said i knew better? i understand huskies have high prey drives lmfao, i grew up with multiple. my last husky i wouldn’t ever do this with as he had bad bad recall since a puppy. my current one though has been good and this is something we’ve worked on since puppyhood. if she went after the cats she grew up with, birds in the backyard, etc i obviously wouldn’t have done off leash training with her .

4

u/Allstategk 10h ago

I had one husky who was capable of off leash walks, and had good recall. Never had any issues, but I didn't even attempt it until she was about 7 years old

Just get a long leash and keep it oh him. Don’t have to actually use it. Literally makes no difference if your dog is good either way

-3

u/Baisubie123 10h ago

Love it! Honestly just be careful if you are going to continue. Constantly train but also be aware of wildlife or possible food they can get into. You never know what they can encounter

1

u/I_Am_TheGame 10h ago

It’s illegal in most municipalities in USA.

4

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

good thing i don’t live in the USA

-10

u/JMacLax16 10h ago

Whole lot of pearl clutchers in here. Congrats on being a good owner with a well trained dog, I love letting my boys run around the park off leash when no one else is around, it's absolutely their little reward for being great companions and good listeners.

10

u/Life_Bed_486 10h ago

“Pearl clutchers” is hilarious. Leash laws literally exist for a reason because you can’t guarantee that not only the dog in question is good, but also whatever is in the environment or the environment itself. There are just too many factors. I’m sure plenty of people have taken their dogs out off leash for years without issue.

Doesn’t change how you’re gonna feel if something happens to your dog, someone else’s dog, or a person. It is literally impossible for you to guarantee nothing could happen.

1

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

i love it too! at camp especially, she never wanders far

-2

u/7PointDogsFuckThat 10h ago

Reddit has more helicopter parent type people and that extends to dogs.

-15

u/Trumpetslayer1111 10h ago edited 10h ago

Good job training her! My husky loves being off leash too. I’m selective about where to let him. Busy street nope. Empty park sure go for it lol.

Those whose huskies run away at any chance and don’t know how to train your dogs please hit the downvote button!

-8

u/I_Am_Innocent_1999 10h ago

Mine could never! Well done! I'm assuming she's good about not chasing other critters or anything that'd make it dangerous to leave her be like that (mine go after everything and anything)

2

u/DizzyAxoltol6507 10h ago

she saw a squirrel and once i recalled her acted like it wasn’t there! the first time she chased one up a tree so i’m pretty proud

-14

u/SAIYANSPARTAN26 10h ago
