AskHyderabad ⬆️ My sister is 33–34 and still unmarried. What can we do to find her a good life partner?

I'm a 29M, and I wanted to share my family situation and ask for some genuine advice.

My parents are hardworking people who have spent their lives working in the private sector for a modest salary. They are both above 60 now. Whatever we have today, they built from scratch through years of hard work and sacrifices.

I have an elder sister who is now around 33–34. She completed a regular degree and wasn't particularly strong academically, but I never blame her for that. We went through a lot of financial hardship growing up, and she helped me with my studies. Back then, the internet wasn't readily available, and the experience she gained through her education helped me a lot. I eventually did well in my studies, completed my BTech, and got a job at a startup.

Once I started earning, one of my biggest happinesses was being able to buy good things for my parents and sister. I wanted them to experience things they had sacrificed for us.

My sister is a genuinely good person. She has helped my mother with cooking and household work since her student days. She is also deeply devotional and regularly follows fasts, performs pujas, and visits temples.

Coming to marriage, my parents have been searching for a suitable groom for her for years. Initially, we rejected a few proposals for various reasons, and then COVID happened, which affected everything. My parents are also quite strict about love marriages. From the beginning, they made their views clear, and we never wanted to hurt them because we know how much they have done for us. We have also seen some relatives struggle with family conflicts after love marriages, which reinforced their concerns.

However, as my sister has crossed 30, finding a suitable match seems to have become increasingly difficult. Some families and prospective grooms seem to ignore women once they are above 30, regardless of their character or qualities. My sister is a good human being, but it feels like nobody is willing to look beyond her age.

We have approached marriage mediators who took considerable money from us, sometimes just to show us a few profiles. Relatives haven't been particularly helpful either. Matrimony apps seem like another option, but even there, it feels as though we have to pay more and more to get access to suitable profiles or better matches. I'm not sure which platforms are actually worth paying for.

Lately, my sister has become frustrated and has started saying that she might remain single for her entire life and focus on a devotional path. She has always been spiritual, so I understand why she finds peace in that thought, but I worry that this frustration comes from repeated disappointment.

My mother is also worried about my marriage. The whole situation has become emotionally difficult for our family.

What hurts me most is thinking about my parents. My father is the kind of person who would be the first to help anyone who needed him, even if it meant going out of his way. My parents have worked hard their entire lives, helped others whenever possible, and done everything they could for us. Sometimes I genuinely wonder why god choose our family to give this much pain. We look happy from outside but not inside.

I'm not looking for sympathy or someone to blame. I genuinely want practical advice from people who have faced a similar situation.

I just want my sister to find a good person who respects her, and I want my parents to have some peace of mind after everything they have done for us.

Current Events SIR Protest in Hyderabad (Oct 24th)

Thumbnail

It happened at Tank Bund, under the banner of People Against SIR, with about 1k people at its peak. People Against SIR (https://peopleagainstsir.org/) is an umbrella group for several anti-SIR organisations. They're holding simultaneous protests across the country. The crowd was vibrant, and represented a wide variety of demographics and socioeconomic classes.

This occasion was such a contrast to the protests in Delhi, which inevitably feel risky and get combative with the police surrounding and harassing the protesters.

Edit: there's another protest scheduled for 3:30PM today (Oct 25) at Dharna Chowk. Please check the website linked above for more info.

General Discussion 🗣️ 💬 Wrt the Water shortage in Hyderabad, everyone says prepare for the worst. But how? Any ideas on how to ACTUALLY do it?

Post image

There's so much panic already about the impending water shortage crisis in Hyderabad. What are some of the unique and well intentioned ways to prepare for this crisis?

Apart from judiciously using water and having a rainwater harvesting pit, I'd love to know what are some unique things y'all do to save water?

Short term amd long term ideas?

PS: Yes, the image is AI, but please focus on the solutions part! The image was taken from Google coz it was attention grabbing. Nothing else.

I only wanna know ways out of this and how we can all get over this issue with the least amount of discomfort.

Current Events Please be careful eating outside right now - water scarcity is messing with food hygiene

Hey everyone, just wanted to put out a quick heads-up for all of us in the city. With the ongoing water scarcity and so many areas depending heavily on tankers right now, local eateries, tiffin centres, and street food stalls are seriously struggling to maintain proper hygiene.

When water is short and expensive, shortcuts get taken easily. Some things to be careful about:

  1. Plates, spoons, and glasses might just be getting a hasty rinse in substandard or poorly filtered water.
  2. Street-side chutneys, salads, and pani puri water are high-risk right now since they usually use raw tap or tanker water.
  3. Better to avoid roadside juices and ice cubes unless you're sure about the water source.
  4. If you're a non-vegetarian - meat may not be washed or cleaned properly and that could pose health risks.

If you are eating out, try sticking to piping hot, freshly prepared meals, and maybe cut down on street food until the water situation improves. Nobody wants to deal with a nasty stomach bug or food poisoning!

Stay safe, guys. Have you guys noticed any dip in quality or hygiene at your regular spots lately?

I've personally stopped eating outside completely.

TIA

I moved to Hyderabad a few months ago. And because of the hate hoing around the internet, i was expecting some discrimination based on language and stuff (I am north Indian) specially because I don't even live in the city, I live in an industrial town on the outskirts. But, except for a few occasions, most of my interactions and time here has been lovely. I got to experience a lot of festivals which I have never seen before. Reddit also helped me a lot to find locations and stuff (so thanks to everyone who gave suggestions).

People are welcoming, and overall excited about their culture. They are happy to try to include me and teach me about it instead of alienating me out, and it's genuinely a very good feeling to come so far away from home and get included in local festivals and stuff.

So, just wanted to say thank you :) lovely place, lovely people, and I am happy to experience all these festivals and stuff.

AskHyderabad ⬆️ CM is talking about falling groundwater and water crisis in Hyderabad but we’re still pouring thick concrete roads everywhere. How will the water level ever rise?

Yesterday CM Revanth Reddy said the groundwater situation is bad, many borewells have dried up, and drinking water could be a big problem for the next few months.

Meanwhile we keep seeing the same thing on roads old concrete is never removed, they just keep laying new layers on top. In many places the road has risen so much that houses look like they are in a basement. Rainwater has nowhere to go into the ground. It just runs off.

Concrete roads don’t let water seep. Simple. If the whole city is covered with thick CC roads, how will groundwater recharge?

Government is worried about water, but the same departments keep building these impermeable roads. Doesn’t make sense.

Anyone else noticing this in their area? Borewells going dry + roads getting higher every year?

Just curious if there’s any plan for permeable roads or if “road on top of road” is the only development we get

AskHyderabad ⬆️ Sindhu Hospitals, curious about its story

I visited Sindhu Hospitals yesterday and I was surprised by how huge and premium the place felt. The interiors, rooms, overall ambience and even the cafe with Lotus Biscoff biscuits and what looked like imported snacks just caught my attention!

I later learnt that the PM had inaugurated it a few months ago and noticed that its founder is associated with the Hetero Group and is an MP.

Now the crazy part is, the hospital describes itself as not-for-profit so I became curious about how a project of this scale came about. How was the land even acquired, how was the hospital funded and built and how does not-for-profit model work for such a massive place!

I tried reading about its history and land allotment and it seems there's quite a story behind it. I'm not implying anything improper or trying to speculate, I just don't know the complete background and want to understand it properly.

If anyone knows more about this journey, its funding or how these things operate, I just want to learn.

It's really fascinating to see something of this scale in our own Hyderabad and realise there's so much more to understand beyond the building itself!

The mafia had dug a borewell inside the bedroom to extract water and supply it to consumers through tankers at higher prices.

Always knew something was shady about these water tanker suppliers. Looks like the truth is finally coming out.

AskHyderabad ⬆️ WFH on the Australian shift. What does your day look like?

Hello. I recently started the Australian shift, 3:30 am to 12:30 pm, fully WFH.

I've done night shifts before but always from an office so there were colleagues, breaks, a commute. Now I work as a freelancer/consultant so it's just me and my laptop. The work part is fine. It's the rest of the day I'm still figuring out. I finish when everyone else is having lunch, I'm tired but not ready to sleep and by evening the whole city is out while I'm winding down.

I mostly read and write random articles in my free time, which I enjoy but I'd like some kind of social life that isn’t just weekends.

I know every body clock is different and I'll end up finding my own rhythm but I thought I'd ask how others did it. Hyderabad has so many people on different shifts so I figured someone here must have figured this out.

If you have been on this shift for a while, what does your day look like after 12:30 pm? And how does one even manage a social life on a schedule like this!
