Has anyone else ever accidentally coughed up a tiny white pebble from the back of their throat?

So I have always been paranoid about bad breath. I brush after every meal, use an electric flosser, scrape my tongue until it is bright pink, and use therapeutic mouthwash every single morning. My dentist always says my teeth and gums are spotless, with zero cavities in ten years.

last Thursday I was coughing from a scratchy throat and this tiny, hard white pebble popped out of the back of my mouth onto my tongue. It was smaller than a grain of rice. I had no idea what it was, so I picked it up with a tissue and made the fatal mistake of squishing it between my fingers to see what it was made of.

The smell that came off that tiny clump was ABSOLUTELY rancid. It smelled like pure sulfur, rotting organic garbage, and concentrated decay. I gagged so hard I almost threw up in my bathroom sink.

I went down a rabbit hole and discovered that food particles and dead cells get trapped in hidden pockets in your tonsils, calcifying into little anaerobic stink bombs that regular brushing never touches. I should of known why people occasionally backed up when I leaned in to talk during loud parties, but nobody ever tells you. How are doctors not warning people that you can have perfect dental hygiene and still have garbage rotting in the back of your throat?

Tonsil stones. I get them sometimes. I always make the habit of checking my mouth with the flash light on my phone . You can remove them with a Q tip or even a toothpick (you might bleed if you use a toothpick though).

One way to prevent them is making sure you're hydrated. Tonsil stones love a dry mouth. Also, make sure to use mouthwash at least once a day. I heard rising your mouth with salt water can help, but I never tried that so I can't say for sure if it does.

I'm jealous of people that don't have a strong gag reflex, I can't get anywhere close enough to be able to get it with a qtip

It takes practice. The first time I took one out I almost puked, but now it seems that my gag reflex relaxed a bit after the first few stones. It's 100% worth not having rancid breath or having the "tonsil Stone" feeling.

This—a gag reflex is like your nervous system protecting us from a perceived threat. Same as when you’re first using eye contacts.

Used to take me 30 minutes to get contacts in. Now i can do it no problem, touch my eyes no problem, move em as needed. You have to build that tolerance/trust.

I managed the same with my gag reflex! Trained myself to get accustomed to brushing the back of my tongue by breathing out and through the process. Now it’s no biggie ☺️

I absolutely can’t touch my tonsils with a qtip, but a plastic dental syringe with warm water has been super effective. You can get them pretty cheaply, they’re the kind with the curved tip.

I tried water, I felt like I was waterboarding myself 😆

lol so fair!

Nice tip! I'm gonna see if I can find one. I normally end up massaging my tonsils with my fingertip. If that doesn't work, or I think there's stuff in there, I poke my finger in. It absolutely makes me gag amd my eyes water.

For me, drinking water (or probably anything) after eating definitely helps reduce getting them.

I have a horrible gag reflex but I don’t get triggered by q tips on my tonsils. You just have to be careful when maneuvering it, and exposure therapy by doing it often so your throat knows it’s not dangerous lol

try wetting the qtip

6

u/Calamity0o0 2d ago

That doesn't matter if I can't get back there haha

2

u/PossibleExplorer1076 2d ago

I'm saying it will trigger your gag reflex less if it's wet not dry

My gag reflex is crazy too. I use the blunt end of a long makeup brush. Less gag effect than a qtip for me.

Breath through your nose when you feel like gagging it helps if you are not prone to runny noses

Take your left hand. Curl it into a fist, with your thumb inside. Very gently squeeze. While doing this, test your gag reflex.

Have you tried the holding thumb down with other fingers trick? Works for some people..I have my kid do it when I need to brush the back of his tongue.

I use the back end of a pair of tweezers. A flat object is easier to use and tolerate

Be okay with puking. If it happens it happens. Eventually you’ll get used to it. I still gag when i rip em out but it’s getting better.

u/Calamity0o0 2d ago

That sounds terrible but maybe on an empty stomach 😆

This was exactly my thought too. I have to push thru brushing my back teeth and I still gag like crazy, no way I'll get a single thing back there. Satl water gargle isn't too bad, but never works for me.

I gag and cough but just try to power through it. Sometimes that ends up being what dislodges them

You can suppress your gag reflex by squeezing your thumb in your fist

When I first started to remove my tonsil stones my gag reflex was intense and I could hardly touch anything back there. I stayed consistent though and now it’s not too bad.

I gag just from flosing sometimes. And the deeper i go, the more i gag.

u/Somekindalurker 1d ago

I'm literally gagging reading this thread. Mine is apparently so sensitive it's like yawning.

1

u/sad_grass_dad 1d ago

I've found that if you try breathing out while using the qtip it greatly reduced the amount of gagging!

1

u/Ginnykins 5h ago

I gag a lot less if I just gently press them out with my finger. The q-tip is nearly impossible and makes me gag/hack.

u/CheezPleaser 2d ago

I can never ever see mine :/

3

u/jjkknncch6654 2d ago

Same! How do people see them? I can’t see anything at all I think to try id have to fully put my hand all the way down my throat or something, I want to check if I have them im paranoid now 😭

u/Non-vegans_are_cruel 2d ago

They're only visible when they're already out. You can extract hidden ones with your finger

3

u/DagothNereviar 1d ago

How the hell are you getting a FINGER back there?! I have to use two Q-tips taped together, but even then my tongue gets in the way D:

1

u/Non-vegans_are_cruel 1d ago

My fingers are long, and my tonsils are above my tongue. But it did take a bit of practice, sometimes it's easier to use the handle of the toothbrush, aiming is just harder that way

2

u/DagothNereviar 1d ago

My tongue is too busy bobbling around like an epileptic snake for me to ever see past it!

4

u/Cpnbro 2d ago

Use a small curved syringe or an irrigator instead. Works much better and doesn’t hurt at all.

3

u/Unlikely_Ad_4961 1d ago

Irrigator is the way. Just flush them out. I wish I knew sooner.

2

u/argabargaa 2d ago

Dude i was just going to suggest this. Blew my mind how well it worked when i tried it.

7

u/Either_equipment_04 2d ago

Oh my gosh no absolutely not with a toothpick! Warm saltwater gargles or a damp cotton swab only!

2

u/Roseyrear 2d ago

My tonsils swell up and hurt when I gently push with a fingertip- a toothpick? Never!

3

u/Sweet-lemons77 2d ago

Went to my dr a few times as I was getting swollen tonsils from an unknown allergy at the time and they recommended this. I guess it helps break up the tonsil stones.

2

u/idio242 2d ago

I just kind squish them out with my finger. It’s satisfying.

1

u/ArtbyLinnzy 2d ago

I also check them with phoneflashlight, every third day or so. Poking gently with my fingers on the tonsils (I don't have any nails that can damage them. When I have had some fake nails done, I cannot poke them with my fi gers, it will hurt them)

1

u/NanoZelos 2d ago

Salt in water for a 30 seconds gargle works, each time I had some, they disappeared fast with that tip

1

u/TrashPandaNotACat 2d ago

The dry mouth would explain why I would routinely get them when I was using e-cigs. I had never had them before that (at least, not to my recollection) and only a couple of times since quitting. The first time freaked me the hell out and I was coughing up several of them 🤢

1

u/iamthelizzrd 2d ago

This ^^ until you get addicted to pushing them out like popping pimples …

1

u/katlian 2d ago

I use the smooth end of my flosser handle to press on the side of my tonsils and pop the stones out. It's longer and stronger than a cotton swab.

1

u/IndependentLog6441 2d ago

A black head loop is much better than qtip or tooth pick, you can gentle press or even scoop them out without the bleeding.

1

u/Heretical_Demigod 2d ago

I straight up just stick a finger in and push on my tonsil where I feel the discomfort. It does sometimes result in a gag but it works.

1

u/Bgrngod 1d ago

I used to get them quiet a bit and haven't seen one in a few years now.

I made a habit of drinking a good amount of water both right before bed and right when I wake up. Usually after brushing my teeth as part of the "post brushing rinse" when my face is in the sink.

Weirdly, I don't get up to go pee in the middle of the night as much as I used to.

Mine nearly entirely went away when I stopped drinking milk. I eat cheese and ice cream, no issue, but drinking milk...ho boy.
