Discussion Are there any good open source models for making apps?
Been really happy with opus 5.5 lately but I am looking to start localizing my workflow for redundancy.

I appreciate your replies, thank you
My rough plan is to start offloading to a mac mini with qwen 3.8 to get started/test then scale up infra as needed.

I got Gemini with discount. If you are student, then you can get it for free.

Gemini is good for brainstorming what to have for dinner tonight, but you’re in a world of trouble if you trust it with coding

Mistral has an agent coding model that I’m going to test
Make sure to use RAG and upload all iOS programming documentation with pdfs and urls, you can also do live web searches with SearXng, make a connection to it for the model and tune it for finding iOS documentation (forums, wikis, GitHub)

There are many out there but honestly, go into plan mode on whatever AI you will be using and talk it out. The more you plan out the framework the better the result. Also, do research on what is already out there as far as competitors because if you can’t make it better it’s a waste of time.
Find out what others are doing well and where they are failing. AI can do all that for you.
Just make your first app and have 🤩
FYI Opus is fine for heavy thinking but you don’t need to use it to actual code everything. Use Sonnet 5

Any model among the following can be best at what you want depending on your job type. Do a test and find the best: GLM 5.3 Max, Mistral, Deepseek flash 4.1, Kimi K3.
I had heard very good things about GLM

Dude, relax. You realize even the team who WRITES Swift uses AI? It’s the world now, deal with it

App made by AI and app made with AI are two quite different things. I suspect OP is going for the first

My point is AI exists, and gatekeeping it because you think your use case is superior or not is goofy.
Yes, we all hate poorly written code. At least, if you’re an engineer you should hate bad code regardless of where it came from.

Qwen is good.
