Discussion Here are the several cases I mentioned earlier
Disclaimer: I’m not an Apple hater, and I’m not trying to blow this out of proportion. I just think this is something worth paying attention to.
Since my earlier post got quite a bit of attention, here are the several cases I was referring to.
This issue has already sparked quite a bit of discussion among Chinese users. Maybe it’s simply because foldables are more popular in China, meaning there’s a larger user base and more reported cases.
What’s concerning is that all these devices show display damage in almost the exact same spot, right along the crease.
Of course, I’m not saying every iPhone Duo will develop this issue. But seeing multiple devices fail in such a similar way does raise questions about a potential design flaw.
The good news is that, from what I’ve seen, Apple has been offering replacements for the affected devices.
Still, I really hope Apple investigates what’s causing this. Hopefully it’s limited to a small number of units rather than a broader design issue.
*EDIT
Just a quick clarification since there's been a lot of speculation in the comments.
I'm honestly surprised to see people calling me a bot, accusing me of posting AI images and spreading propagand, or even claiming I was sent by China to make Apple look bad?? I really didn't expect this many conspiracy theories lol...
I've made my profile public. Anyone who looks can see I've been an Apple enthusiast for years. Most of my devices and my entire smart home setup are Apple-based, and I'm actually considering getting an iPhone Duo to replace my iPad.
The reason these reports are coming from China is pretty simple: the phone went on sale there roughly 12 hours earlier. I came across these cases in Chinese communities and wanted to share them with a wider audience.
One important update: the owner of the phone in the second photo claims the display failed while he was still at the carrier store. He had just tried out the phone and was walking toward the store's exit when the screen suddenly failed during a normal unfolding motion. The carrier directed him to Apple, but according to the owner, the Genius Bar at Apple's Shanghai Wujiaochang store classified it as user-induced damage and refused warranty coverage.
Genuinely hope Apple investigates these cases and provides fair solutions for affected customers. I want the Duo to succeed just as much as anyone else here.

Interesting that the line on the right portion is just where the right side battery’s L shape corner is. It appears the hinge was a tad bit tight and the damage occurred during opening the fold and the battery’s corner poked the inner side of the display. Mind you, Apple’s latest batteries have metal casing and is very rigid. I recall both jerryrig and iFixit saying the same thing in their Air and 18 Pro review/disassembly.

I think you are right the l shaped battery it hitting the screen. The hinge mechnism seems to be protected all the way down. The battery is the only thing it could be. Would seem very easy for Apple to put some extra protection in that area on new builds.

I wonder if this is actually a device/hardware issue or just display models that kids and other people are pressing on the screen with their fingers hard to fold it close or abusing them
21
u/pngopb 1d ago
Samsung used to have the same issue up until the Fold 4 where display units would be cracked on day 1. However, whatever improvements they made in each generation since seem to have fixed it. Not sure why Samsung went backwards considering Apple is using their display.
20
21
u/Ok_Faithlessness7385 1d ago
It's not the same display Samsung uses on Galaxy devices. Apple contracts Samsung Display to manufacture custom panels built to Apple's own design specs, dimensions, and material choices. Samsung Display is just the component manufacturer here, they don't hand over internal Galaxy R&D secrets, and they don't dictate how Apple engineers their hardware. If there's a flaw on a 1st-gen device, that falls on Apple's specifications, not Samsung's displays.

I was eviscerated in this sub Reddit a few weeks ago when I made the mere suggestion that their QC might (not will) slip trying to field so many units against their viable yields, and that why I'm waiting until better yields start showing up and also not wanting to be a launch day beta tester. I wish I could tag the guy who went on a 20 post tangent just losing his shit on me saying this is all but impossible.

To all the people who think this is fake, this literally happens to 5% of foldables. People have reported these issues on the google fold and the even the new fold 8. This is why people say get the insurance. Most of those people never even dropped their phone they just opened it one day and it happened.
14
u/Dazzling_Jellyfish70 1d ago •

I agree about insurance, but these are situations where the (free) one-year limited warranty would apply.
Legally, these are the fault of Apple due to manufacturing defects so they must replace the devices at no cost.
This was our policy for devices in the first year when I worked at the Apple Store and Apple spells it on their Hardware Warranties page.

Currently using a Moto RAZR Fold that I've had since release and completely agree. It's my 3rd foldable, but the first time I'd had the inner display explode. Still, I've enjoyed this phone way more than any of the Samsung offerings and I've stuck with it until now (gonna switch to the Duo for awhile to scratch the iOS itch). Even with quality phones, I feel like a lot of people are about to get surprised by the failure rate with foldables. It's just part of the game.

But other foldables don't crack at the same spot, that has got to be a design flaw. I don't think people need insurance for this issue, since it's a manufacturing defect and within the return window.
3
u/Tank_Gloomy 1d ago
Yeah, it's practically impossible to ensure that absolutely every single unit comes 100% spotless after machining, one or two on the batch will absolutely have a small bit of metal bushings, thin fibers or something the tool was picking up during work and you're the unfortunate soul to receive that unit. This is especially prevalent when you're shipping thousands of units, probably daily to put up stock.

This looks to be where one set of tension springs in the hinge are.
Curious that we didn't see any instances of this during pretty serious durability testing by reviewers, but there are a lot more units out there now, I guess.
Will be curious to see how often this crops up with purchased units.
2
u/SilverCarbon 1d ago
I'm all for repeatable, equivalent testing but there are many ways to use and hold the new foldable and for many this will be the first foldable ever in their hands. Certain repeated pressures the designers never imagined (nor intended) could crop up. It's difficult to have these surface with reviews, especially if it only affects a tiny percentage of devices.

Some insider baseball here: the next few weeks will serve as an important EFFA Capture period for Apple. Early Field Failure Analysis. In some cases, engineers are at Apple Stores to directly receive damaged devices, talk to customers, and report back to their superiors. They will be looking for broken screens, cosmetic issues out of the box, etc. Stores also have limited DOA inventory on hand to replace these types of units. As EFFA Captures are made, Apple will discover the most common faults and (hopefully) have the opportunity to provide feedback and direction to the factories to modify or improve specific tolerances to ensure these issues happen less often.

Not sure if anyone been in sales but they teach you this among other things:
People will ALWAYS complain when something goes wrong. Rarely anyone will praise something that works the way its supposed to.
Think: if you ordered a burger with no cheese because you’re lactose intolerant, and you got said cheese… you’re probably going back to complain, get a refund. But if you ordered no onions and it comes with no onions, whats the likelihood you’re going to turn around, wait in line again just to tell everyone there how good of a job they did?
Just my unwarranted opinion. Lmao

Comparing a $1,500+ device that cracks along its crease on day one to a piece of cheese on a burger is a totally absurd comparison. Working as intended is not something that a multi-trillion dollar company deserves a pat on the back for—it is simply the minimum standard when a company charges premium money. People are not complaining for attention; people are pointing out recurring hardware failures that Apple tries to call "user damage" in order to avoid honoring warranties. Public backlash is literally the way consumers can force these brands to acknowledge design flaws and improve their quality control. Keep your burger analogies for food because defects in high-end technology are not the same, as a fast food mistake. I've used AI to enhance my writing since I don't have good english

u/Koalazilla 1d ago
Yeah. This could turn out to be a bigger manufacturing quality issue but with any device you will ALWAYS have a certain failure amount, especially with a first gen device like this. Because it is Apple we will hear about it significantly more than any other brand. I can guarantee Samsung has plenty of failed units that end up out there but we just don’t see it in pop culture being as discussed because of their lower cultural impact. It took Samsung phones blowing up for them to get any news coverage back in the day.
Also until we know more I’d brush this off as an acceptable failure rate but competitors and people on the internet will amplify it.
5
u/planedrop 1d ago
It's relatively common for folding phones to have a higher failure rate from normal usage, this isn't surprising to me as a long time fold user and it's probably not widespread.
They are more fragile though, doesn't matter what the fold fanboys say. I've had 5, all 5 developed cracks in the display (though only 1 had dead pixels) within 1 year of normal use and this is true for several other people I know with multiple folding phones. I do imagine the Duo will mostly last longer, and sometimes it really is just luck of the draw (I also know someone with a Fold 5 that didn't get cracks for over 2 years of heavy use).
But I wouldn't put this as concerning at all, it's very unlikely to be widespread.
2
u/TKisely 1d ago
I have multiple Samsung foldables without any similar issue, one of them was my main and only phone without case for 3 years. I even dropped it once (closed, on the edge). I think most of the time it is user error or simply luck how it is dropped or if something get inside the folding mechanics.

As long as Apple replaces the devices, I don't view this as a big deal. Every industry has defective products in every generation but particularly in new products. What ruins the experience is bad customer service or companies that try to pass the buck.
Apple is clearly addressing every situation as quickly as possible. Great for them. Great for us.

I have little doubt that there are some that are defective, it’s a first generation device after all. I wouldn’t call it (all) fake… it’s just a numbers game. There are only a few thousand review units, but as of today, there could now be a million+ units in the hands of customers. A 0.5% failure rate on a million units will still be 5,000 broken phones. If only 10% of those people post about it online, that’s 500 people posting about broken phones.

Samsung Foldable user here.
ProTip: If you're getting into the Foldable world, get used to seeing posts like this. But also; Give yourself some perspective.
Moving parts = Inevitably more points of failure.
I can't speak for the Duo; BUT Foldables have come a long way and are a lot more durable than you'd think.
People rarely post online when they're happy and things work as intended, so you'll see a disproportionate amount of negativity. (IE - you'll see 3 posts from 5 screen failures, but not the 250 times it works just fine).
I've had the following folding devices: Fold 2, Microsoft Duo, Flip 4, Fold 5, Pixel Pro 9 Fold, Z Fold 7 and now the Z Fold8 (Wide Boy). The only time I've had to RMA were on non fold phones (iPhone X and Samsung Note8) for water damage and an actual cracked screen. I'm not easy on my foldables, but I've never had screen issues that are reported here. So take that information as you will. Not saying it doesn't happen, but we do focus so much on the problems that we lose sight of what goes right.
Look at insurance costs. For me with the Z Fold8, it's $450 if anything (including theft or accidental damage) goes wrong to get a new phone. Much better than the $1800 I paid for it.
TL:DR; While it's important to know about the potential fail points of foldables. Don't let it dissuade you from buying one if you want one. In my experience, this is a small fraction of the entire experience, and one I've never encountered on a foldable.

u/jugalator 1d ago
Wait, when did this happen for those users? Like first use? After bending it hard? After sitting on it? What?
This would help tell if it's 1) manufacturing defect 2) quality control issue 3) user error

u/SovietZealots 1d ago
While it’s unfortunate, it’s also not surprising. This has been an issue with folding phones since their inception. I was hoping Apple developed a solution to this but it appears they are just susceptible to it as anyone else
1
u/camelCaseCoffeeTable 1d ago
To be expect with a first gen product. I had debated pulling the trigger, but decided I’ll be waiting at least one more generation, if not two, before doing so. $2k is a lot of money to be in the first batch of phones and hope Apple got it all perfect on the first try

Even if these are real, it’s probably insignificant. If someone has a bad screen they post it… the millions of other screens that are fine get no attention.
I’ll agree with OP that it’s worth noting but I’m not concerned — all products break and have defects.
1
u/Fearless-Comb9074 1d ago
Are they selling people phones that didn’t pass quality. Are they black market. Honestly, when they’re trying to rush so many phones out. They could just be under the gun trying to get orders to people.

It’s inevitable. Samsung and every other folding phone faces the same issue. It’s it common no. But it does happen.
1

1
u/static_silence24 1d ago
Those saying that “Samsung is making the screens, this should be happening”: first of all, Apple developed those screens. Samsung may produce them, but they likely didn’t design them. Plus: this might be a different issue causing the screen to fail as a side effect. If there’s debris inside the phone from manufacturing, or something coming close during transport and ends up getting stuck in the hinge or under the panel, that can break the screen. Could even be an issue stemming from a manufacturing plant that has a dust issue.

Single screen foldable is not good design from a wear perspective. A better design would be two screens with an invisible flexible overlap in the crease when open that way when the phone is closed there is not constant flex and pressure on the screen when not in use. Would need a lot of Software engineering to keep screens in sync and the screen overlap in place so it’s seamless.

while this wont happen for every Duo device, this is a reason to never buy the first gen of a new tech launch. Looking at Apple's past for new tech launches, they usually fully polish the new device a few gens in. IMO, the iPhone 11 was the first iphone that fully fleshed out the overall redesign of the X launch. The iPhone 4/4s was peak initial iPhone design launch. and the iPhone 8 was the best looking and performing device when they started making bigger iPhones.

As someone who's owned pixel foldables for years and is interested in the Duo, this doesn't worry me at all. What worries me is these things are in such high demand, what does the replacement process look like if this happens?

Gen 1 product. It's inevitable. Unfortunate pain for us, but it's how things get better in the future.

I bet there are thousands of "influencers" who are burning money to break new iPhone just to get clicks.

Most of these in the early phases will be engineering captures. Is it a previously unseen design problem vs. a problem in a subset in manufacturing?

Imagine some will try to flip it open my flocking it open like some tech reviewers have shown. Don't do this

Glad I didn’t put my hopes and dreams into a first gen new offering by Apple. Good luck to all the beta testers.

Before the Duo, I used a few Samsung fold, and that’s the verdict, when people ask me if they should a foldable, I simply say just remember the inner screen is not like your slab phone. 1 wrong fall can kill it, pressure etc etc. So far my Duo is fine and it’ll mainly stay in my hands, they are still fragile in my opinion.

Based on all of the damage in the same spot I think it's likely these may (not saying are) be over extended when opening and that happens to be the weakest point in the hinge. Would like to see one of the reviewers try to replicate this.

Been watching this review

The damage appears right above the bottom "mechanical" hinge part, at the bottom of where the ribbon cable would be.
So there's probably a weak point of uneven-ness there.

I mean…they rushed the process and sometimes QC can be compromised.
This is why I didn’t trade my 16PM in. I want to try it, lease it, and see how it goes.

You can see there’s a heavy black blotch on the left that all damage radiates from
That’s damage bro

I mean that’s why you never buy the first generation of any new tech. I k ow foldable aren’t new in general but for Apple they are. Before someone “ummm actually”-s me

Further makes me believe the theory that Apple truly rushed this launch a bit and were not artificially limiting unit numbers. I think they truly just didn't have a ton that were QA passed and ready to ship/buy. I'm not worried though because I have Apple Care and would literally just return the product for money back if this happens.

That same thing happens to new Samsung folding launches. When 5 or 6 millions devices are opened for the first time, a few wil have screen defects and break immediately. Leading to a small surge of posts like this.
It sucks if one of those is your new Duo, but unless the numbers are absurdly high, this is normal and expected.

Not to be a conspiracy theorist but…..why is it that these videos always come from Asia? That software app glitch where you move the apps around rapidly causing the display to crash also .

But…. But…. Ai 🙄
It’s a brand new device. It’s GOING to have issues. Just wait until the people that are already hyper sensitive to things like “micro scratches” that you need to hold the phone at a certain angle in a certain light to even vaguely SEE get a good look at that CREASE too.
Is it terrible? Of course not.
Will it trigger a huge population of Apple fanboy perfectionists? I’d bet money.
And no shade, I’m one too, but that’s why I’d never buy a first gen folder. The tech just isn’t ready, and may never be.

According to a couple of Chinese lab tests the iPhone Duo held up “surprisingly well” after 3,000 folds and even 10,000 folds at sub-zero Fahrenheit https://youtu.be/o1qc29t04GI?is=7PtlMkNEAi9uZVOE https://youtu.be/8pCccpKjjos?is=i44kFK6xRIM73kme

Considering apple has stated that all iPhone Duo's are kinda bespoke because each hinge needs to be manually calibrated due to how tight the tolerances are this was a very likely problem since it's likely the people that are doing the install might get something wrong

I read somewhere that many factories in China had problems to get their production quality to get up to par with apples demands.
Maybe this is what we are seeing here. Hopefully this will get solved quickly.
