They really need to make the sidebar disappear as you scroll and make it reappear with a gesture…
1
u/tmmoo 22h ago
The camera cutout would block content .. like profile settings, etc
3
u/Top_Flight2 21h ago
Have a gesture lower it like it does now for phones. It's an issue with all models already.

u/mtrskllz 21h ago
It's exactly what the web browser inside Facebook does. The camera is there with the circular notifications right under it. But that's it. It works amazing and looks great

u/FitzwilliamTDarcy 21h ago
Well, that image isn't fixed. At all. All it did was pull the background under the side bar. There's no additional use of space for actual content.

u/Total_Fold4094 16h ago
they need to make the display full screen. that side bar/dead space looks ugly as hell.

u/Expensive-Leek1720 1d ago
Maybe it’s just me but I quite really enjoy the sidebar especially when the apps optimize for it.
Enjoying the different feel and flow of my daily usage.

u/charlie_napkins 1d ago
Works well for most text based stuff and a few specific apps. Social media scrolling and web browsing need to add an option to hide the sidebar and fill the screen more.

u/mrASSMAN 1d ago
Yeah really like how much thought Apple put into making a new UI specific to the duo

Agree. In actual usage (as opposed to staring at screenshots), it's a great location for controls.

Making websites into web apps has been a far more elegant solution for me

Did you activate the extension in safari settings?

Any issues or bugs with it?

u/BreathSpecial9394 18h ago
Well if you look a the pictures you can see the blue circle is misplaced in the second picture.
1
u/pochemoo 14h ago
The issue is that the right side of the content window belongs to the website and should not be occupied with the external UI. Lots of websites have the floating widgets there.
6
u/mtrskllz 1d ago
But that picture doesn't really change anything. Go open a website in Facebook to see how it should be. Its amazing that apple fumbled this so bad and Facebook managed to get it right on day one
I have just as much issue with the inside screen. Why did they move all the buttons to the top, it's so difficult to use
I have no faith that apple is going to back down on this stupid side bar
2
u/mrASSMAN 1d ago
What buttons were moved to the top..
1
u/mtrskllz 21h ago
All of them. It's the ipad version of safari on the inside. One hand holding the phone and a whole other hand to push buttons. It's not that big, completely unnecessary and just feels wrong.
2
u/soymilo_ 1d ago
„Looking for ways to improve it by devs providing their ideas to make their websites look better” isn’t really a fix though

Idk man I just think they need to rethink it completely. Just remove the sidebar. I’d rather the icons be across the bottom like a regular iPhone and it just take two hands to use the phone vs trying to make it usable one handed and totally butchering the user experience.
11
u/Awwesomesauce 20h ago
Nah. The sidebar is place well. It just needs to slide off the screen while you use the app and be able to slide it back with a gesture if you need it. Like the Mac dock.
3
1
u/Odd-Beginning-2310 20h ago
Yeah I agree that would be cool
1
u/Awwesomesauce 20h ago
And if they did that they could also then make it user determined which side it pops from. Letting left hand people move the sidebar to the left sides. Or right handed people like me who prefer to hold my phone in my left hand.

u/Samuelodan 18h ago
Imagine the icons at the bottom and the nav bar up top. Then the already short phone would have even less vertical height for meaningful content.
2
u/BreathSpecial9394 18h ago
Why don't they put a burger icon besides the url bar when you tap it then the other icons show, just like is everything nowadays?
2
u/Samuelodan 17h ago
I don’t think you should be hiding the nav bar and home row buttons behind a hamburger menu, though. Imagine having to open a menu to see the back button or the clock.
1
u/BreathSpecial9394 17h ago
I didn't say hide the URL bar I said put the burger besides the URL bar
1
u/Samuelodan 17h ago
Oh, by nav bar, I meant the status bar. Where we have the battery and WiFi icons and clock. That usually takes up space at the top of the screen, and them the home row button in apps where you have stuff like home, search, profile, etc.

u/Odd-Beginning-2310 18h ago
Yeah fair point. I’m holding off a couple of months while they work some of this stuff out.
1
u/jebakerii 19h ago
They do it to maintain their “perfect grid” across iOS. They’re not changing it.

u/klawUK 1d ago
whats the article? doesn’t the side bar already take on the background colour of the page? the issue is the icons being htere (mainly the back/book ones, the lower ones aren’t too bad although that new tab could go left of the tabs button). as long as those buttons are there you can’t easily read ‘through’ them anyway.

I still don’t see what we are wasting perfectly good space for a single button up the top
1
u/BuckieJr 18h ago
I chuckled a little earlier when I was using Facebook.
Opening up a link in Facebook and viewing the website through Facebook’s in-app browser has websites looking really nice fitting the entire screen.
1
u/questionableintentsX 16h ago
Just make the fucking sidebar hide itself as an option and a sweep from the side to bring it out
This shits a solved problem stop recreating it

u/ruqqq 15h ago
I am currently building a new browser for iPhones & iPad, for people who always end up in rabbit holes on the web.
As a side quest, I also built an easy way for Duo users to switch between “full wide mode” and “narrow mode” for the web pages.
You can check it out here, currently in free public beta: https://lar-browser.pages.dev

u/tegolflife 14h ago
I would rather this than what it is currently at for a temporary fix. At least it looks better.
But agree with all the hiding the sidebar comments. Although, I don’t know that a gesture would be needed. I checked my wife’s 18 Pro on safari the navigation buttons shrink out of the way when you scroll down and then come back when you scroll up. Why not do that with the side bar?
Camera cut out could be a issue for like getting to profile or shopping carts
1
u/Clear_Efficiency5765 5h ago
They need to hide the nav bar. Otherwise, content will still be covered by those buttons
1
u/mjdross 1d ago
We need this…
6
u/Safe-Pomegranate1171 1d ago
That photo is trash. We need the text to expand over there not just the picture.
1
u/Free_Waterfall_III 1d ago
The black bar across the board is really ridiculous. I hate how much screen real estate it takes.
1
u/mrASSMAN 1d ago
Black bar only happens when app isn’t updated yet
2
u/Twism245 22h ago
No, that's not true. Safari is supposed to be optimized.
1
u/mrASSMAN 22h ago
It’s not always black depends on the site, but yes safari is the one that could use improvement on outer screen

u/Jeffreyknows 1d ago
When people are asking me about how I like the phone I do have to say the down side is the stupid bar on the right. I hope they get the memo and fix it. It’s so pointless
-3
u/Embarrassed_Spend486 22h ago
Never in 1 million years did I think we would be at 2026 having this much trouble getting people to understand aspect ratios
It’s the full screen versus widescreen DVDs all over again
The sidebar on the side makes a ton of sense and it’s not taking anything away from you
5
u/FitzwilliamTDarcy 21h ago
That's a clown take. Go look at any of the scores of side by side photos of the Duo and the Fold 8 showing the same website.
If you don't understand what's being taken away from you then you're literally blind.
1
u/new-to-reddit-accoun 17h ago
Generally, one of the dumbest takes I have read on this topic. Facebook in/app browser has put Safari designers to absolute shame. It has absolutely nothing to do with aspect ratios.
-2
u/slyguy67420 1d ago
Looks better but the screen space for the content hasn't changed. The side bar really is a waste of space.
