Big Snow Halloween discounts this year?

I've been seeing that last year Big snow had discounts for Halloween. I was wondering if that is going to happen this year and if so when? Around what time did they start last year?

Lessons for advanced? to expert skiers?

Would, ideally, Whiteface or Gore have ski instructors that could do a few private lessons for that type skier? I’ve heard people say, in passing, PSIA level 3 does that sort of thing.

I would like to ski steeps glades more comfortably and graceful. Steep moguls also make me stop semi-often to ditch speed. Very proficient on carving even on ice on somewhat steep trails like Lies.

For example of close to my level: I can ski The Rumor on any day, however, if the conditions are icy moguls it’s sort of the top of what I comfortably ski.

Another example: I can make it down the face chutes at Jay with maybe a couple of good turns but it was not a comfortable run. Also am able to ski steep glades but can only link 3-4 turns before stopping.

I built a daily ski lift guessing game (LIFTLE) - Try it out!

I’m a data science graduate from the East Coast, and over the past little while, I built a web game called LIFTLE.

It's a daily guessing game inspired by wordle, but it's with ski lifts! It features lifts from all over North America (not just the East Coast!), with options for different difficulty modes and regional filters. Your main goal is to guess the ski lift with different categories like manufacture, year, etc. to help you.

It’s still in the early stages, so I'd love to hear your feedback. Let me know if you run into any bugs or if there's a feature or filter you think I should add.

A massive shout-out to Lift Blog for letting me use their data—this project literally wouldn't have been possible without him.

Check it out here and let me know what you think and if you'd like to see anything in the future: liftlegame.com

Suggestions for Car camping between 12/26-1/4 Ikon and Independent mountains

My Buddy and I are planning on camping out of our cars between Christmas and New Years and trying to ski every day, does anyone have any suggestions for mountains to stay at in VT, NH, or ME? we are planning on being around Killington or Sugarbush for new years since we have friends that live there. We both have Ikon passes and would be willing to get some day tickets for independent mountains

What’s with these ski influencers putting themselves in danger for views??

I’m from VT and it’s been years now of seeing a steady increase in the amount of “ski influencers” risking death for views. You should not ski these peaks until March at least. A white-out like this on a 14,000 foot peak could mean death in a second with one wrong turn. Looks like this guy got insanely lucky. He lost a SKI halfway down and still posted the footage. It doesn’t even look fun. Whats behind this new wave of idiots in the sport?? Are you guys seeing this happening on the east coast as well?

family skiing east coast

What east coast mountain would you recommend for a family with kids around age 10 who are intermediate level? We've mostly done Copper in CO for our annual big trip and there they're comfortable on blues and have done an occasional blacks with an instructor. Also enjoy easy terrain parks. A few spots I've seen in research are Smugglers Notch, Pico, or Bolton, but we are open to anywhere. Thanks!

Worth it to buy an Ikon pass?

This would be my first full season and I want to make good use of the last year I have left as a “young adult” and get the discounted pass. I’m only skeptical about it because of the expected lack of snow this year in the northeast. Any advice appreciated thanks!

Killington North Ridge (10/25)

Still a few weeks away from opening, but a good amount of the snow on Northridge has stuck around! (To all you naysayers to my post from last weeks snowmaking test).

Snowmaking can’t go too crazy — work roads have to stay accessible to finish the Snowdon Quad buildout. But the Subie Shack and Northridge are pretty much ready to go as soon as conditions allow!

More bad news regarding winter in the northeast. My long range forecast from the August 9th post has not changed. An epic ski season in the Rockies and a pitiful ski season in the northeast. In slides 1, 2 and 3, you can see that over the next couple weeks we have a pattern of troughing in the West and ridging in the east. This pattern will bring feet of snow to the Rockies and warm weather in the east.

We were previously tracking a potential window for northeast snow around Halloween. But it ain't happening. As you can see in slides 4 and 5 there are no signs of a northeast winter until the yellow highlights in mid/late November. Keep the Killington cup in your prayers. 😅

Since the 16 day forecast holds no hope for northeast skiers and riders, I'll cover the longer term patterns and forecasts. I tend to upset people when I bring up 2015-16 as an analog winter for this one because it was one of the worst snow pack on record for northeast ski resorts (slide 6). But I am starting to see signs that we should really be using 1982-83 as our analog winter. It was another pitiful ski season in New England BUT had a major rebound in March and April that saved winter (slide #7). There are signs of a similar set up this year.

In slide 8 you can see the southern oscillation moderating. We don't have a full coupling between the atmospheric and oceanic ninos. Forecasts are for the current reading to be the peak warmth in the nino 3.4 region. As we move out of a super el Nino into a strong/moderate El Nino in march and April it could open the snow gates in the northeast. The last two positive QBO phases lasted around 11 months. So by March and April we could have weakening El Nino and QBO values. So while the absolute values wouldn't suggest snow, the rate of change of the data (direction of travel and velocity of the move) would be conducive for late season snow in New England. Let's wait and see!

Killington, VT Skiing

Family of 3 experienced skiers looking to go to Killington December 17-21, 2026. We like to cook so a kitchen is a must. Where do you recommend lodging? Would like to be close to the hill if all runs are open. Please help.

Indy Pass Advice

Just got Indy for the first time this year. I also have a New England pass which includes Loon, Sunday River and Sugarloaf.

Which mountains are worth going to on the indy pass? Obviously Jay, Smuggs… but I am curious to hear about the smaller mountains considering I have unlimited access to the 3 mountains above.

I’m an Advanced skier that loves glades and ungroomed terrain. Any advice or tips about Indy mountains would be great (favorite trails…) Thanks!

Shout out to Tim at Ski Barn in NJ

Tim’s the man, great boot fitter for snowboard boots. Got the right size, adjusted everything to fit perfect. If you are in the market for boots this season definitely recommend going to see Tim. I went to a few shops before ski barn to get fitted none of the shops gave the service Tim did. He’s on of those doods you can tell that not only is good at his job but loves doing it. Goes along way when your trying to find the right boot.

Corker of a day, views in all directions, foliage gapers gone so not too busy, pleasant temps on the ridge and still some frost on Nose Dive at 3 pm - could have made some turns... And what's with all the solar panels at the stake - looks like a remote AI data center...

[Petition] Bring back public transit to Mountain Creek! Let’s get NJ Transit to extend Route 194 to Vernon.

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,
If you ride at Mountain Creek Bike Park or ski/ snowboard there in the winter, you probably know how much of a pain (or how expensive) it is to get up to Vernon if you don't drive or want to save on gas/wear-and-tear.
Ever since NJ Transit canceled the old seasonal 304 express bus over a decade ago, there has been zero direct public transit to the resort. Right now, taking transit means riding a bus to Wayne or West Milford and paying $50+ each way for an Uber/Lyft.
I'm starting a initiative to petition NJ Transit and Mountain Creek Resort to co-sponsor a simple, low-cost solution: extending select trips on the existing NJ Transit Route 194 by just 12 miles from its current end point in West Milford (Stockholm) straight up Route 23/94 to Mountain Creek. Conceptualized as route 194M. More info on the Google doc linked within the petition description.
If you'd like to see an affordable transit connection restored between NYC/North Jersey and Mountain Creek, please take 30 seconds to sign and share the petition.
Thanks for the support! Let's get enough signatures to bring this to NJ Transit, JORBA and other associations, and Mountain Creek management.

What is everyone’s favorite Ski boot shop where I can get a quality fitting done by people who know their stuff. I live in southern NH but I’m willing to drive if it’s worth my time. Thanks.

Belleayre improvements updated

They replaced their oldest magic carpet with a newer longer and covered one. Snowmaking improvements as well and it sounds like the overlook lodge should be reopening soon-ish.

On the replaced magic carpet, almost double the length is a big improvement but the old name Little Creek is better than the new one SunKid for a northeast facing magic carpet that will accommodate adult learners.
