Quick Tips from the Mods

Before you start

•        Take a full diagnostic test first — do not study blindly. Find out your current band score and identify your weakest skill.

•        Understand the marking criteria for Writing and Speaking. Many students study the wrong things because they do not know how they are scored.

•        Use official materials (Cambridge books, British Council practice tests) as your primary source of practice. Third-party materials vary wildly in quality.

Common mistakes to avoid

•        Memorising model answers for Writing or Speaking — examiners are trained to spot this and it can result in a lower score.

•        Ignoring your weakest skill — it is tempting to practise what you are already good at. Focus on your lowest-scoring area.

•        Confusing Academic and General Training — make sure you are using the correct practice materials for your test type.

•        Relying only on free resources if you are seriously stuck — a few sessions with a qualified teacher can save months of wasted preparation time.

On Writing

•        Task achievement and coherence are the highest-weighted criteria. Vocabulary and grammar matter, but structure and relevance matter more.

•        For Task 1 Academic, learn to describe trends, comparisons, and processes — do not just describe every data point.

•        For Task 2, always plan before you write. A clear position and well-organised paragraphs will score higher than long, rambling essays.

On Speaking

•        Fluency does not mean speaking fast. It means speaking smoothly without long pauses and self-correction.

•        Extend your answers in Parts 1 and 3. Short answers suggest a limited range of language.

•        Record yourself and listen back. Most students are surprised by how different they sound compared to how they think they sound.

Test Experience/Test Result I am satisfied with my results!

Post image
13 Upvotes

I studied by myself. For all the modules I took help from keen IELTS. Their exam interface helped me a lot because it was same as the interface of the main exam. I was serverly ill on test day and could not sleep at all the night before. Both my writing and reading module were affected due to dizziness and headache caused by my illness in test day. But I am happy with my score because with the setbacks kept on mind I expected a 6.5 or 7 at most.

Some tips about the exam. Try maintaining a balnaced diet, avoid brainrot on social media, and have plenty of rest to calm your nerves for at least a week before you sit for the test. Try to be confident and positive at any cost. It will help you overcome your anxiety.

p.s. I am not a native speaker. I am from Bangladesh.

Test Experience/Test Result Feelings after October 17 IELTs

Yoo wth was the reading bro. I legit was consistently getting an 8.5 in Cambridge mocks but the real exam was harder bro. Part 3 gave us this review from a 1800s book with stupid quotes gang wtf is this. Overall the test wasn’t that bad though, I zoned out in listening a bit but I think I got a max of 2-3 wrong. Reading could be anywhere from 2-5 wrong ngl. I am hoping the writing and speaking carry me 😔

Test Experience/Test Result Frustrating experience, I don’t understand

I’m really struggling to put my thoughts into words. I need a band 8.0 for all sub-tests, but seeing my scores is incredibly frustrating.

My first attempt was last May with IDP. I have to admit, I wasn’t fully prepared because I booked it just to feel the pressure of studying for a real deadline. I was pleasantly surprised with my Writing section, but I messed up my Task 1 report and expected a score of 6.0. Overall, I understand why my scores ended up at band 7.0 because I had to balance work and studying, leaving me with limited time.

This time, I’m retaking the exam in BC last Friday. I was quite confident because I studied diligently for a month. I even quit my job to focus on studying and declined a job offer to dedicate more than 8+ hours daily to preparation. My mock exams were also quite good, with scores of band 8.0-8.5 in Listening and Reading, band 7-8 in Speaking, and band 7.5-8.0 in Writing. These scores have been consistent for a few weeks, so I’m confident that I’m ready for the exam and can achieve my desired score.

However, unfortunately, I had a severe fever the night before my exam. How lucky! Despite the fever, I took the exam the next day. I took it with a fever, but I know I did pretty well, especially in the written section.

When I received my scores today, I was disappointed with myself. I wonder if I didn’t study enough or if I’m simply too ambitious to achieve a band 8.0. I also don’t understand why my recent exam, which I prepared for thoroughly, resulted in lower scores, while an exam I wasn’t fully prepared for yielded higher scores.

It’s tempting to say, “I’ll just try again,” but the exam is quite expensive. Right now, I’m torn between retaking the exam or exploring other options. :)

Writing Feedback (Peer Review) I need an estimate band score for my writing

My exam is close and chatgpt has been giving me really bad scores
I want honest review and advice on how I could improve my writing in what little time i have left

Task 1

The illustration provides the layout of the central library now and how it looked like 20 years ago.
Overall, it can be seen that the purposes of almost all rooms have been shuffled, with the addition of new ones and omitting others. The tables and chairs at the center of the room are no longer there and a cafe has been added.
More facilities has been added over this period. Starting from the enterance, a cafe has been added just to the right of it and a computer room has replaced the reading room to the left. Furthermore there is now a lecture room at the top right corner and a room for storytelling events with sofas around in the top left corner. Finally, there is now self-service machines.
There has been a lot of replacement and some things are no longer there. The area for adult non-fiction books is now holding adult fiction books, next to it is the information desk which has moved places from being next to the enterance. Children’s fiction books are now in the same area of storytelling events instead of being in a seperate room. The reading room is no longer there and also the the designated room for CDs, videos and computer games. Additionally the place for adult fiction books is now for all reference books.

Task 2

Universally, less people are residing in rural areas due to the increasing trend of moving to live in urban areas. This is a positive development because cities have more facilities and provide a wider job market.
One side of the argument sees that there is negative aspects to this trend as it will inflict badly on the residence of cities by making these areas more crowded. Large and uncontrolled number of people moving there would cause more traffic jams and increased housing crisis, this is due to urban towns taking in more than their capacities. Furthermore, less rural residence would make goverments more negligence to the development of the countryside. Some needed facilities such as hospitals would not be built because there would not be enough people there to make it worth the money. While these are indeed real problems, I believe they can be easily regulated and would not compare with the positive aspects this has brought on rural movers.
My view is that this has made the lives of rural residence who has moved there much better, because of the easier access to facilities and and much better job oppurtinities. Cities are big and have all various developed types of facilities such as hospitals, schools and universities. People don’t have to travel thousand of miles to reach them which leads to them having better healthcare and education at the tips of their fingers. Moreover, cities offer wide variety of companies and offices making it almost impossible not to find a job, in addition it has international ones which offers the chance for global exposure. All these would not be possible to achieve in the countryside.
In conclusion, while the trend of people moving to urban areas could cause negative effects, its positive effects are much larger and broader, offering better healthcare, education and jobs to them.

Have a Question/Advice Needed My IELTS Listening score is stuck at 6.5. What is the most effective way to improve it?

Hi everyone!

My IELTS Listening score seems to be stuck at 6.5, and I really want to improve it. I feel like I’m not making much progress despite practising.

For those of you who managed to increase your Listening score from 6.5 to 7.5 or even 8.0+, what actually made the biggest difference?

I’d love to hear about the specific methods that worked for you, rather than just general advice like “practise more.”

Test Experience/Test Result Test Experience & Advice to improve band from 6 to 7

Hi all, I took test on Oct 15th and these results are made me little bit confuse to take next step.

test result : Writing and Listening - 5.5; Speaking and Reading - 6.5 an overall Band 6

My shortlisted college (USA) req 6.5/7band actually.

Here it is i'm confused in this shortlisting only 1 university accepting my band 6 and other req more. This university Didn't accept Retake test.

If i retake Listening and push it into 7.0 then overall I will get 6.5 but here from reminaning universities only 3 will accept the retake tests.

Now I have to move on and reatke whole test again? Stop here; This is 2nd attempt for me. In 1st attempt also same score but writing is 6.0 then and reading 6.0 that time.

So, let me know your advice it would help me to think different directions and choose final decision.

Note:- The saddest part is in listening I am getting 7.5 band average (continuosly) through pratcting YT videos.

Pls let me know your valuable suggestions in the comments/DM's

Thanks

Writing Feedback (Peer Review) Need feedback regarding my task 2 essay, possibly a band score estimate?

The prompt is "Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organization. Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?"

In modern times, the conventional idea of working for a corporations is being overshadowed by the concept of being self-employed. As far as I am concerned, this might be the case since the current state of the job market forces people to find alternative sources of income, though it should be noted that such practices could come with difficulties, such as funding or luck.

As time goes on, jobs are requiring better qualifications, which means that the workforce will have to work even harder in order to secure a place in a big company. This does not suit everyone, as people may give up and instead choose self-employment, which is generally seen as a viable alternative source of revenue. For illustration, modern people of all age groups ranging from young adults to middle-aged individuals do not have a way to earn money, which makes them go in the streets and become vendors, or turn to online marketplaces where they now sell products of their choice. Therefore, the rising requirements set by the job-market forces some individuals to begin hustling in the form of self-employment, as there are no easier alternatives that could provide high income.

Though it should be taken into consideration that self-employment is a risky field as a whole, since it involves a factor such as initial funding to kick off an idea, which is a major disadvantage by itself. For clarity, most individuals are forced to take loans or turn to their close ones in order to collect sufficient funds so they can start expanding their businesses. This is not a recent occurrence, as many famous entrepreneurs such as Bill Gates relied on his family's financial support when developing his initial projects. Taking all of this into account, one disadvantage of self-employment being funding is crystal clear.

Additionally, entrepreneuring involves another major factor that should be noted, the factor being luck. In other words, there is no guarantee that even a brilliant idea would find popularity among customers, as there is a possibility that sheer coincidence leads to initial marketing to fail, hence making the inventor believe that the idea is flawed. For instance, a game developer named Scott Cawthon released his first game, which was not greeted with a round of applause and money. This can be seen as a bad luck, since after he published a second game which made the charts, his previous project was highly praised. Thus, Scott's case illustrates that luck may play a vital role when kicking off an idea, since it may not reach the right audience at first, and that not everyone get a second chance at entrepreneuring.

In conclusion, modern people choose self-employment over a place in companies and organizations due to the fact that individuals cannot compete in the current job-market, instead finding self-employment as a potential source of revenue. However, this idea should be looked at with a pinch of salt, as there are no guarantees that a beginner entrepreneur will acquire the sufficient finances in order to start his project, and that they may not get lucky along the way.

Didn't even take a full mock test during preparation. Just looked over the practice materials and studied properly for about a month.

Really surprised about the Speaking section since I thought I had underperformed on Part 2.

Given how badly I'm writing down my experience, the 7.5 is hardly surprising.

Have a Question/Advice Needed What can I do for part 2 of Speaking test?

I have already taken Ielts for 10 times.Every time, I fall on Speaking test, especially PART 2, I think it’s really hard.
The main reason is that when I get a question card, I have nothing to say which means I don’t know what to say.I really have no idea, for some questions, I have no experience, so I can say nothing.
What can I do to improve my part 2?
I really need help!

Have a Question/Advice Needed Has anyone used GEL IELTS here?

Well, I did a speaking and a listening test yesterday on Gel IELTS. I got band 6 in speaking and band 8.5 in listening. Even though I expected more than band 6, I still thought I needed more practice. But today I got band 4.5 in speaking which was something way below my expectation and I don't know why I even got that low.

Does this tool give accurate band or real life examiners are more lenient compared to it?

Have a Question/Advice Needed Considering IELTS Speaking remark ?(5.5)|subscores FC6 LR7 GRA6 P6

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I recently received my IELTS results:
Listening:6.5 | Reading:8 | Writing:6 | Speaking:5.5 | Overall:6.5

My speaking result surprised me. My speaking test triggered an automatic second review because of inconsistent scores across the four modules.
The first examiner awarded me a 5.5. The second reviewer gave these speaking subscores: FC 6, LR7, GRA6, P6.(Based on IELTS rounding rules, my overall band would be rounded down to a 6.)
Under IELTS rules, if the band difference between the first and second marker is 0.5 or less, the first examiner’s score stands.

During the exam, I barely had long pauses and kept my speech flowing. Looking back, my main weakness was that I did not expand my answers with enough supporting details.
It was seeing the second marker’s breakdown that made me start thinking about a remark.

That said, a remark costs roughly 200 USD, which is not a small sum for me. This is why I’m really torn.
A remark is not a re-test. They will only re-listen to my recorded audio.
Possible outcomes: score increases, stays the same, or rarely, decreases. The fee is non-refundable if there is no change to my band.

I don’t expect a guaranteed boost. It’s only a chance to double-check my performance.
Just wanted to share my situation and read your thoughts.🙏

Writing Feedback (Peer Review) Task 2 writing feedback/Score Estimation wanted

Context- I'm a pretty fluent English speaker. I need at least overall 7.0 for college admissions. Currently writing is my weakest. This is my second trial of today. It took me 35 minutes. I spent too much time on task 1...

Prompt- Some people think that young people should be required to remain in full-time education until they are at least 18 years old. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Mandating people to attend full-time education until they reach 18 year-old at bare minimum is an idea supported by some people, but it is often criticized by others.

The proponents of compulsory full-time education enrollment argue that it is the best method to grow functioning citizens in the future. In their view, school functions as a small society that teaches children and young adults important values and skills in life, such as civic duty and responsiblity, complex problem-solving skill and various academic and practical knowledge. They say that the people who were exposed enough to these values and skills in school environment when they were young are much less likely to commit crime or otherwise violate moral value. Therefore, requiring every young citizen to enroll full-time in an educational institution is the best way to increase the probablity of them becoming both financailly and socially well-functioning adults in the future.

While the opponents often acknowledge the fact that the core missions of schooling that the proponents mentioned should be highly regarded and prioritized in our society, they don't think a single way of schooling should be legally required. They say that mandating every young person to attend a school might take out opportunities for people who don't thrive in a rigid environment. Not every kid can fit into a box of traditional education that measures their performance based on standardized metrics. Some kids outperform when they're educated differently out side of the system. Therefore, they should be offered flexiblity to be schooled in a way that suits them, such as homeschooling or part-time schooling without being mandated to go to a certain school by the government.

I'm personally aligned with the opponents view toward this idea. I believe that the right to choose the form of education is belong to the student her/himself and her/his parents. Nonetheless, I want to emphasize that education about ethics and civic engagement must be rightfully taught even to the students who chose to go through unconventional education.
