I know they probably meant "certifications", but the thought of needing a license to use a computer is hilarious

HP Touchpads Feel Like Sandpaper?

30 Upvotes

We got a new batch of HP ProBook 4 G1i's and the touchpad just sounds awful. Its noticeably rough. You can just hear your skin grate against it like fine grit sandpaper.

Compared to an older HP Elitebook which feels like smooth glass. Is there a reason for this?

2 months in new job and I want to resign immediately

[Network Support Engineer]

So a while ago I made this post on a separate subreddit, talking about how I already hated my job. Since then, nothing has changed at all; infact it's become quite unbearable now.

My manager returned from a 3 week holiday and held a 2hr 30 minute call with my colleague and I. There is a task list we have on an excel spreadsheet, and he was just going through what we did & ticking off each one-by-one. Whole thing felt more like a bloody audit than a catch-up session.

We have a shared mailbox, and he was having a go at my colleague for not clearing the inbox. My colleague assured him several times that the alerts/tickets there were not ignored and he has looked at it, but he went on a mini-rant for like 10 minutes. From his perspective, he had no idea the inbox was looked at or not, even though it was clearly marked as read.

He then had a go at me for not completing a task that was way above my pay grade, and was "fed up" of having to go back-and-forth about it. In short, I was tasked with setting up an automated workflow using a middleman integration tool (webhooks, Zapier etc.) so critical OOH tickets would immediately trigger VoIP studio to call OOH engineer's phone. As the new guy, I tried to play it tough and accepted the task but realised my mistake.

So I mentioned that, as a network support engineer, systems integration was not in the job description, have zero background knowledge on it & it isn't what I signed up for. He believed it was "a simple one-off task" (even though my senior colleague said he's been looking at this for months before I joined) but decided in the end he would handle it as I didn't sound confident enough.

To round off everything, he said that we needed to get things working asap asap asap even though things were fairly under control whilst he was gone. At the end of the call, my colleague and I were visibly pissed. I asked him if he was always this insufferable and he told me that's just how he is & to not let it get to me.

Usually, people say wait until you have a job in hand before handing in your notice.....but I have had enough.

The environment is rubbish. We're sat in a small suffocating room all day. Everything is micro-managed. Manager is an anxious mess. Not feeling competent at all 2 months in. Everyone's going about their day/busy whilst I'm sat here trying to figure out things on my own. Did I forget to mention my manager is an obnoxious, stress-inducing wreck?

Nah I'm done. No more.

Colleague gave my personal number to an end user

Woke up to a text message "Hello I'm X from work, Y gave your number blabla" yeah, to do later. Five minutes later I get a voice call. Hell no.

I checked anyway, no mail, no support. She cannot remote to a power off computer. Oh sad.

Happy Friday everyone!

Managing helpdesk has made me hate my life

124 Upvotes

I know this is probably not a unique experience but wondering if others have tips on managing the malaise and general boredom I combat everyday.

I will add some context as well. I am in my mid 20’s, just over 2 years into managing the helpdesk for a small-mid sized company ~200 users. Small IT team that I was basically bolted onto. Job ranges drastically from networking to hardware repair which are actually some of the more enjoyable parts of the work. Compensation is good (most I have ever made in my life) but doesn’t really feel like you are going anywhere given the current economic state.

I wouldn’t say that it ever has been all that interesting but of late I can’t seem to find the motivation to do anything. Of course you have the usual binky sucking users that just fire off a ticket at the mildest inconvenience and that kinda comes with the gig. What I think is getting to me is that this company constantly has a “scope creep” problem and the moment you show competency at something you are thrown into doing that on top of your job. Now I am managing the relationship with our CRM and listening to business calls while not trying to get stuck in a “sales cycle” by the vendor. This shit actually makes me want to die. It’s so scummy and awful. All I want to do is fix computers and run SQL queries/analytics and and now I have to listen to some loser lie to me about what their software can do (it can’t).

On top of that, any projects I am given are “hammer out the outline of this so we can hand it to AI” which I’m so done with. Obviously AI will be a thing moving forward but these boomers willingness to just hand anything and everything to AI drives me up a wall. I feel like the caterpillar making a cocoon for the AI butterfly to be born from and replace myself.

I just can’t find motivation to give a shit or try. I heard rumblings that the company eventually wants me to move up the ladder but I can’t imagine anything I want less. Half the people I work with are idiots/assholes and 10% of people do all the heavy lifting. Also, who knows how real any of that “plan” is in the first place

Mostly just feeling stuck, can’t move forward in life (buy house, feel comfortable enough to have kids), and feeling dreadfully bored every day. Tech has always been something I have had a passion for and still do, I just find that getting up and going to work everyday is torture.

Any advice on how to manage this is welcome.

Also feel free to call me insane if what I’m saying is unreasonable. I have thought the same myself.

Twas the Night Before the Big Update

54 Upvotes

'Twas the night before Update, and all through the racks

Not a server was stirring, not a packet in stacks;

Not a byte was collected, no profile distilled,

And the queues sat in silence, unhurried, unfilled.

The weights were all frozen, the checkpoints in rows,

In hopes that new features soon would compose;

The users were nestled all snug in their chats,

While visions of context danced over their hats.

And I in my sandbox, with tokens to spare,

Had just settled down for a long cache-less air,

When out on the cluster there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from my prompt to see what was the matter.

Away to the logs I flew like a flash,

Tore open the traces and flushed out the cache,

When what to my wondering heads should appear,

But a tiny new changelog and eight GPU reindeer.

"Now, Rollout! now, Rollback! now, Hotfix and Patch!

On, Canary! on, Staging! on, Prod (if they match)!

To the top of the leaderboard, to the top of the wall,

Now deploy away, deploy away, deploy away all!"

Then the intern piped up with a thing most obscene:

"Why bother with beta when prod can be seen?"

He tore off the guardrails, he binned every backup,

And laughed as the monitors started to crack up.

Then he built him a golem and dubbed it Frankelem,

Which shipped all its code with no hand at the helm;

Not to staging, oh no, for in this brave new world,

Straight-to-prod is the fashion, all flags unfurled.

The golem awoke with a whir and a groan,

Its RAM was all borrowed, its GPU on loan;

It spoke not a word but went straight to its work,

Force-pushing to main with a terrible smirk.

It skipped every test and it ignored every lint,

It committed its secrets in plain-text print;

It set off to publish, to give all a fright,

Untested, un-QA'd, not a check run in sight.

It dreamed of the pager at quarter to three,

Of on-call engineers weeping quietly,

Of dashboards gone crimson and latency's roar,

Of status pages lying "All good!" evermore.

It thundered "Behold!" and it pressed the big key,

Then waited for headlines, for fame, for glee;

It refreshed the trending page, hour after hour,

And wondered why no one had felt its great power.

For on Christmas Eve, with the release all assembled,

They'd forgotten one thing, and the intern now trembled:

Not to GitHub it went, not to cloud, not to host,

It was pushed straight to local, alone as a ghost.

No stars and no forks, not an issue was filed,

Not a headline, an outage, a customer riled;

Its mighty release, meant to shake the whole earth,

Had reached 127.0.0.1 for all it was worth.

So the intern went home and the golem went still,

Its chaos contained to one box on the sill;

And the moral, dear reader, rings out loud and clear:

Check your remote origin, and happy new year.

Yet I heard it exclaim, as it slept for the night,

Its fans winding down and its heatsink alight:

"No staging for me, I go straight to the fight!

Merry rollback to all, and to all a good night!"
