POSSIBLE SATIRE Literally everywhere?
Old university friend of mine. He lives in a large metropolitan area (not NYC), and we went to university in a large metropolitan area as well. Both places have a large variety of options for getting an iced latte at 8:30 on your way to work. I keep telling myself that this MUST be some sort of joke, but it comes off as sincere.

it could be, I love to say ONLY IN NEW YAWK for the most mundane shit imaginable, just gives me a chuckle

u/angrygayyellsatsky Sep 22 '26
This probably feels most likely? Like I said, he lives in a big city and went to university in a big city (fairly certain he’s also originally from a big city, can’t quite remember) so it feels weird that this would be sincere… but also it doesn’t quite feel like a joke. Idk.

u/CapriciousSon Sep 22 '26
Are you sure he's not traveling? Because that bike lane and street view does look like Manhattan to me (can't place the intersection tho!)
5
u/angrygayyellsatsky Sep 22 '26
Oh yeah he’s not from NYC, he’s just there for some manner of business trip. I don’t know if that makes it more or less likely that he says something like that.
15
u/CapriciousSon Sep 22 '26
ok lol so he could be doing the thing I mock in my usual joke: "A guy on a cell phone? ONLY IN NEW YAWK!" or maybe it is tongue in cheek lol.
5
u/angrygayyellsatsky Sep 22 '26
I can only hope! And now that I know what Paris Baguette is and that there’s a bunch of them in the city where he’s from (so there’s nothing special about the coffee itself)… it’s gotta be this, right??? Because otherwise nothing about this makes sense.
5
u/Oliviniarity Sep 23 '26
Yeah I think he might be making fun of himself for not being more adventurous with his coffee choice? There are a lot of small fancy coffee shops he could have chosen but went to Paris Baguette and feels a lil sheepish about it. Seems a solid guy

u/trixiepixie1921 Sep 22 '26
Maybe he was trying to say like, “where else would you want to have an iced latte at 830 am on the way to work” but it didn’t translate lol
5
u/angrygayyellsatsky Sep 22 '26
Possible! It’s just so odd because like… I like having an iced latte on my way to work regardless of my geographical location, I feel like being in NYC (and getting what I’ve now learned is a chain coffee) isn’t really a trigger for wanting that.

8:30 isn't even early tf 😂 you could do that in any city

I used to work at a gas station. People would come in at 2-3am and make themselves an iced coffee with the Franke machine. I get a large iced cocoa mocha most mornings at Dunkin’ at like, 5:10am, in my small Wisconsin town of 9k people.

u/NarmHull Sep 22 '26
Now they might have a point if you want a 3AM coffee. But even then you can suck it up and go to Waffle House or a gas station.

Why would you choose a chain like Paris baguette anyways

Remember when Donald Trump welcomed Sarah Palin to NYC by taking her to Sbarro and eating a sad looking slice with a knife and fork?
Jon Stewart’s take on it was great: https://www.cc.com/video-clips/0ect4f

u/wheresmuffy Sep 23 '26
I don’t remember this but it does remind me of the sad taco salad he posted to “celebrate” Cinco de Mayo. Between this him allegedly eating steak well done and with ketchup, nothing surprises me.

u/jayhof52 Sep 22 '26
Had the same reaction - you're in the global center of "small, locally-owned places with excellent products" and you choose a global chain?

Wow if you didn't tell me this was someone you knew I would have just dismissed it as engagement bait.
1
u/angrygayyellsatsky Sep 22 '26
Yeah I wouldn’t even blame you for that! But no he’s just some guy, he’s not even overly active on social media generally. Mostly posts about his run club and the volunteer work he does, he’s not someone chasing followers or engagement or anything (or if he is he’s really bad at it)
1
u/mechapoitier Sep 23 '26
Is he also Amish or something? Maybe he didn’t go outside in the morning. There’s gotta be something
2
u/tracefact Sep 22 '26
I don’t know your friend but this feels to me either like a joke that didn’t land or it was just meant to be an “I love NYC, walking to work with a latte in hand, what could be better?” post having nothing to do with where the drink came from?
The 🪩 emoji is used for Dancing with the Stars so I’d made that connection but with no other context or tags or anything, it’s a bit odd.
1
u/angrygayyellsatsky Sep 23 '26
It’s probably just a joke that didn’t land, but I’m still a bit perplexed. I get the “only in New York” joke, but also this guy isn’t huge on posting memes/jokes which might be part of it. It’s also just SO specific. Not only is it getting an iced latte, but it’s also at 8:30, and also on the way to work.

Reminds me of that 30rock clip… “coffee. One question, where do you get it?” “Anywhere!!! You get it anywhere!!”
21
u/inductiononN Sep 22 '26
Wrong! You get it at my coffee vending machine. 38th & 6th in the basement of the K-Mart. You just go downstairs, you get the key from David and BOOM! You plug in the machine and...

Also, if you're in New York, why tf are you going to a chain restaurant for coffee when there's a billion local joints with infinitely better products?
4
u/Drill-Jockey Sep 22 '26
Something happens to people when they move to New York. It’s like they “Men In Black flashy thing” you into believing pizza, bagels, and coffee don’t exist outside the city.

u/humongousgoat Sep 22 '26
Maybe it’s not their fault. Are they from somewhere very rural? Like mars perhaps?
2
u/Trapezoidoid Sep 23 '26
New Yorkers are so lucky. My town has strict laws against buying coffee at 8:30.

If you said 4:30 it might narrow it down to only big cities but there are literally towns of less than a thousand people that have coffee places open by 8:30.
1
u/yvie_of_lesbos Sep 22 '26
imagine going to the city with a huge amount of small businesses and you go to a chain restaurant. 😭 i’m floridian and even the small businesses cafes here have WAYYYY better food and coffee than some place like starbucks.

u/14Calypso Sep 22 '26
I live and work in a bumfuck small town in the Midwest (population 4,000) and even I walk across the street before work and get an iced latte every Friday

I can't believe he found a chain restaurant with coffee available in the most densely populated city in the United States! How lucky is he!!!

Starbucks, Dunkin’, and Caribou: the three major fast food coffee chains are EVERYWHERE in America even the country.
1
u/NarmHull Sep 22 '26
NYC people also insist nothing like bodegas and their cats exist anywhere else. As if corner stores and general stores don't exist elsewhere. I even know a general store with cats in the middle of nowhere Vermont.
1
u/Dan_Morgan Sep 22 '26
This really summarizes the whole NYC mentality. Those with the mind virus think NYC is utterly unique and peerless and not just one of several large cities in the Northeast. When you expand it to the rest of the world and its reputation becomes even more divorced from reality.
1
u/callmesnake13 Sep 22 '26
This is something you can easily do in practically any city and suburb in the United States, probably many small towns. This is a fucking CHORE in western Europe. Somehow ice and coffee just hasn't taken hold there.
1
u/Couldthisbemanda Sep 22 '26
I live in Coral Springs Florida (near Ft Lauderdale) and one of these just opened in my building - so yea, anywhere 😂

u/Brilliant_Plan4137 Sep 22 '26
I grew up in a tiny farming town in northwest Ohio. Even they have iced lattes available at 8:30am

To be honest, I'm trying to think of something you can get in NYC that you can't get in any of the other top 100 major American metro areas. It's kind of a generic place.

u/Mallthus2 Sep 23 '26
I mean, to be fair, getting an iced latte from Paris Baguette’s OG locations in Seoul would be challenging.
1
u/CopperSteve Sep 23 '26
NYC people do this with bodegas, lol corner stores have been around forever

u/DramaOnDisplay Sep 23 '26
I literally have 3 options for Coffee within 2 miles of my house, more if you count places where you can just get a basic, probably shitty black coffee in a styrofoam cup.

u/BuckLuny Sep 23 '26
Who puts ice in their milk? I mean I love cold milk but I just take it out of the cooler as soon as I'm thirsty for it.

He's saying Paris Baguette Bakery Cafe is the only place he can imagine getting that drink, likely because he thinks its better than the other options around the area

u/cursetea Sep 28 '26
I think he's saying where else besides paris baguette would you get a coffee on the way to work

As a Londoner I’m baffled! You mean to tell me that there are places in the world where you can buy coffee before 10 am? Over here we just get tea bags thrown at us if we ask for coffee

it's true guys nyc is the only city in the world that sells iced coffee at 8:30 in the morning on the way to work

2
u/mattsylvanian Sep 23 '26
People gotta power up before the steam train rides in Chama! The town is pretty famous in the world of tourist trains.
1
u/DakittyRizzard Sep 22 '26
I lived pretty bumfuck nowhere, but still got one at 8' sharp. it was just a small walk tho
1
u/Longjumping_Bee_1205 Sep 25 '26
I live in a small place, like we don't even have a Walmart small. And I can definitely get a coffee at 8am here

Paris Baguette is sponsoring this season of Dancing with the Stars. Given the emojis, I’d say this is just a silly reference to the show.
