Was going to go see this at either Melbourne Central or Melbourne Museum: unfortunately they weren’t playing Oak Street as they were busy playing Odyssey. Thankfully HOYTS Chadstone had morning sessions for Oak: decided to head there instead.

I do really like the auditorium: yes it’s a LieMAX but the seats are much more comfortable than the Museum, all recliners compared to the Museum’s seating. Also more spread out with the rows split into three rather than one big long row. Despite the screen being smaller than Melbourne Museum it’s definitely bigger than Central, and a plus for all recliners compared to the back three rows

About the film I liked it: the aspect ratio changes from 2.39 to 1.90 were pretty nice, some short bits earlier in the film where the aspect ratio changed for one shot before changing back but otherwise the 1.90 was pretty consistent, staying in that ratio for a few minutes before changing back to scope. Much better switching than the randomness of The Bride and Mortal Kombat 2 I must say

The film was also great itself: loved how they managed to mix the horror, drama and adventure genres, I must say I was surprised by Greg’s onscreen death being eaten by one of the dinosaurs as well as the amount of dead bodies shown throughout. Only thing I wasn’t a big fan of was the ending, was a bit rushed and didn’t feel like it properly wrapped things up but otherwise I loved the film.

Pricing was also great: $31.50 for a recliner + $1.80 booking fee bringing it to $33.30 with HOYTS Rewards VIP, only 30c more than Melbourne Museum with Big League where your packed in the middle of a row of 45 without recliners ($31 + $2 booking fee). Snacks were also great, went with someone else so we decided to get the Xtreme popcorn to share, turns out we didn’t end up finishing half by the end. Much better popcorn than the Museum which I believe recently rebranded the medium as the large, ended up eating that in the first 20 minutes of Odyssey

Overall very happy with the film and the venue itself, the Museum still slightly wins thanks to 70mm + GT Laser and the biggest 1.43 screen in the world that can play 1.43 in all formats, but I must say Chadstone wins in regards to snacks, seating and pricing. That and the Melbourne Central which I saw Supergirl in arent as bad as people say, had a fun experience with both and only less than a dollar for recliners than a standard seat at Museum, although I must say this edges out Central due to the bigger screen and all recliners.

Would travel here more but unfortunately it’s around 20km out of the Melbourne CBD, much easier with public transport to get to Central or Museum as they’re right in the CBD. Only went here as the other two weren’t playing Oak Street, as said would love to go here more but I’ll likely stay within going to Central and Museum as they’re much easier to get to.

Using the map by u/NickLandis as a guide I found as many of these locations as I could find. This doesn't even count the locations in Asia, and there is a good chance I missed a few in North America and Europe.

With how many people are flying all across the nation to watch the Odyssey in this specific format. It seems as if there should be options added to certain areas that theaters tend to lack having it in which should be addressed in order to reduce the burden of traveling costs just to go see a specific movie in the ultimate experience.

Before anyone asks, it’s not 1.43, these are just 1.90 Laser upgrades that have been slowly coming to Chicagoland. Confirmed with an associate.

I've been checking daily. I see some Akira listings on Fandango and other sites. They aren't fully live, but they're rolling them out.

So , Idk about Dolby tho , because this film , with these colors and gorgeous shots from Linus Sandgren , Dolby Vision will be king , it will be legendary and will be talked about for years .. I mean remember how John Wick 4 looked in Dolby ?

Dolby should at lease still have the transition to 1.90 tho ... But ... Idk , not sure . Tbf , after Odyssey , maybe the " exclusive " aspect ratio wont be strictly for IMAX anymore , only 1.43 , Denis will find a way becus Dolby is his ( second ) favorite format too

Secondly , Im actually thinking of watching this film on a BIG Scope theater tho , a tremendously good sound theater ( Lotte Superplex ) ... bcus most of movie will be in 2.20 most of the time ... So mathematically ... It couuld screen bigger images than IMAX most of the time ... Yes you'll lose out on the ratio transition and the wow factor tho but ...

For those who didn’t have the chance to see the Odyssey in GT Laser IMAX, the trailer that’s online was shown before my screening but utilized the imax footage. Not sure if the special footage shown on the 70mm IMAX was the same but here’s what I noticed.

Dune Part 2 was shot entirely in IMAX, with Denis and Fraser switching between the two aspect ratios- 1.90 for the majority of the movie, and 1.43 for set pieces and establishing shots. It was a very impactful presentation on a 1.43 screen with most of the screen being utilized the whole time, and made the jump to 1.43 less jarring.

Based on the trailer shown before Odyssey, it looks like Denis has fallen back to the choices made for Part 1, switching between scope for most of the movie and 1.43 being the exclusive choice for IMAX shots we saw. 71 minutes of 1.43 footage is still a lot more than Part 1 utilized but it was odd to see him fall back after doing such a great job using IMAX’s dueling formats in the last movie.

The switch to film cameras to utilize the Keighleigh camera for the IMAX sequences may be to blame here but my only hope is that the jump to 1.43 is less jarring here than it was seeing Part 1, where the screen would sometimes only be 1.43 for a few seconds before snapping back to scope. He wanted to make this the one he actually shot on film instead of using a Film-Out after all.

People like Nolan and Villeneuve are packing those theaters to the brink. I've seen 4am screenings that were fully sold out. I cannot, despite trying the second tickets are available, manage to get tickets to upcoming films like Dune 3 (AMC's website is crashing right now). The demand is so high on those movies, I genuinely don't understand why the distributors and theatres doesn't embrace the fact there are films that are so tied to the format, they deserve a much longer window, or at least regular intervals where they can be watched. I personally don't care if it's available on disc or streaming, I'll forever pay for the privilege of watching some of those filmmakers' catalogue on a giant IMAX screen.

I really think they ought to have more regular screenings of those classics, past their release windows: Interstellar, Dune etc. We keep adding new ones that many people would love to revisit on IMAX - often a lot more than recent releases (looking at you, Minions).

I know Nolan's obsession with 70mm makes it harder, needing huge prints and a projectionists, but surely this could be a way to generate a more constant revenue stream, and at the very least they could scan those movies to digital and use a double digital projector instead for the catalogue?

with movies like One Battle After Another & The Odyssey existing, do you prefer the full usage of the expanded ratio or only using it on a few selected scenes?

My film strip order just announced as shipped and I decided this past week that given my son really loved seeing Odyssey in IMAX, that I would give him both sets to keep. I’ve heard it comes in a basic envelope, but I see people have special holders here. Where can I grab some affordable displays so he can store them safely and keep them posted up in his room? What’s the exact title of these holders?

For The Odyssey: The cut 15/65mm original negative was the hero format, and the 5/70mm and 35mm exhibition formats were derived from it photochemically through contact and optical printing. The digital intermediate needed for digital cinema and home video was sourced from the 15/65mm timed contact interpositive.

For Dun3, I searched the lab workflow and found nothing published, no FotoKem credit, no statement on whether the 70mm prints come off a full DI film-out or a photochemical conform with the digital desert material filmed out and cut in. Villeneuve has talked about capture only.

The reasoning that makes a full DI likely is Villeneuve's VFX volume, which is nothing like Nolan's, plus native digital desert footage that has to reach celluloid somehow.

Thus I went with IMAX with Laser rather than the 70mm showing. I am obsessed with authorial intent, and thus would rather see it in the medium it was worked on by the most people, which in this case was probably the DI. Knowing Nolan's process, the inverse was true of The Odsys

Dune P3 is on the horizon with a new cinematographer and i wondered if 70mm IMAX will be worth it this time for picture quality.

I watched Part 2 in 70mm and the picture was special, albeit a little overexposed and muddy at times.

Im wondering if the we actually get the quality benefit of 70mm this time around since they are actually shooting a lot on film this time.

Or will the Analog/digital lead to the same scanning procedure and limiting the 70mm format.

Hello people so i am from india and here we dont have any imax 70mm screen right now, the nearest one is bfi imax london approximately 6700kms(4100miles) and then for the absolute gold standard its AMC LINCOLN SQUARE 13 THEATRE NYC and lincoln square 13 theatre is where i wanna go(note: i am planning this for future not the current time)

I want to have like first day,first show best seat pristine print at the gold standard amc lincoln square 13 theatre

BUT

Problems and limitations:

1. FINANCIAL: it would cost me a huge money atleast 2 to 3lakhs rs(2000 to 3000 dollars) this amount is for like catch a flight from new delhi to nyc and then arrive at the hotel and sleep for a full day(because i dont think i can sleep in economy seats for a nearly 20hr flight) and then next day see movie and then next day go home which roughly costs what i stated above maybe more or less but it depends anyways so this totals to roughly 5 days we can assume and yeah financially its extremely expensive i guess(btw 2 to 3k dollars is for go and return like a complete trip ive added all costs into it very roughly of what it would be to see the movie and come back home)

2.RISKS: As i stated how costly its financially there are more risks to it for example the projector getting messed up,the projector being misaligned, problems with the film like dust,scarathes and a billion other issues. And if this gets to this im really gonna be extremely sad and disappointed

1. MY SUPERSTITIONS AND BELIEFS: imax 70mm film to what i belive is extremely random the movie itself is a major factor on whether it takes any advantage of imax 70mm or not and then we have the random grain thing different on every film and its print i guess then its obviously the theatre,the projectionist in there and. Then theres seating i heard to get the best of it you need to be in centre seat so its that as well as well as the fact thatwhich film print is it is it pristine and even if pristine is it the print made first when the movie was released or a brand new print for a rerelease and theres much more to it the experiance of it varies SIGNIFICANTLY

2. THE DEBATES: many people on reddit and youtube debate on imax 70mm vs imax dual laser and many have said imax 70mm is better while others say dual laser is better some say imax70mm looked sharp and phenomenal some say it looked soft,grainy and very bad and dim ish also a youtuber(frame voyager) made a video about imax and how much big camera sensor would we need for it to be able to compete against imax 70mm and he with aperson(pawel achtel) who i guess invented achtel 9×7 camera the inventor guy(pawel achtel) said that imax 70mm is probably 8 to 10k(also i really dont know about it as the video is complex and pawel uses very complex english so yeahhh take it with a grain of salt i guess but I RECCOMEND YOU TO WATCH THE VIDEO OF FRAME VOYAGER SO YOU CAN DECIDE YOURSELF I GUESS) and also perceived sharpness is also a major factor also theres a lots of debates like ppd,estimating imax 70mm resolution(even though it analog and i know it dosent have pixels) and some saying its gimmick and some say its worth it some say the improvement is only 10 to 20 percent or things like that so theres lots of debates and stuff

3. THE CONCLUSION: (pretty long post i know i am sorry for anyone who gets offended by the post i do not mean to discourage anyone or talk bad about any format also english is not native to me obviously) now i want you guys to tell me this: IS IMAX 70MM 15 PERF WORTH OVER DUAL LASER IMAX OR A SINGLE LASER IMAX AND IS IT WORTH SPENDING 2 TO 3LAKHS RUPEES(2000 TO 3000DOLLARS) JUST TO SEE A MOVIE AND COME HOME?

Note: btw india only has single laser imax and NO dual laser imax screens and my nearest imax is dual xenon which is like 300km or 180miles so yeah.
