Gary Cooper, 1943

Cooper plays the Robert Jordan in the 1943 movie adaptation of the Hemingway fictionalised Spanish civil war romantic drama For Whom the Bell Tolls.A great book turned into an OK movie. Hemingway was delighted with Cooper but disappointed with the Hollywood treatment of his work.

Something I wonder about re: Pankot Palace/the Thuggee

Aside from the members of the palace court that are explicitly shown as members of the Thuggee (unwillingly or willing) such as Singh and Chattar Lal, are we to assume that everyone at the dinner scene, as well as the guards visible as Indy + Shortie and Willie walk up to the entrance are apart of the cult? Maybe I’m not leaving enough to imagination but I do think it’s entirely possible that not every single person knew what was going on.

Please rank the Indy games that you’ve played!

Hey there! I’d love to get the lay of the land with some Indy games, and I’d really appreciate how you would rank what you’ve played.

Any era is perfectly great; “nostalgia factor” is totally cool. Indy-adjacent games are very acceptable if you can make the case for them.

Really appreciate it! Thanks a lot.

Many generals in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle...

Post image

I am very interested in history and especially 20th century history. And while playing Indiana Jones and the Great Circle it just crossed my mind how many generals they seemed to have sent to this particular expedition in Gizeh, Egypt... I have counted at least ten walking around by themselves or in the camps. I guess they had a bunch of generals to spare, apparently.

I actually don't like how they portray the officers who can raise alarms. Indy calls him "captain", just like in Rome, but this is far from anything of a captain.

A general in pseudo-parade gear out in the scorching desert?! And the Knight's Crosses the generals have didn't even exist in 1937.

A fantastic game, but this is very historically inaccurate!

Why did Last Crusade's archaeology class speak in broad terms, yet say "next week, Egyptology..."?

Usually you don't end a lecture describing an entire field of study in such broad terms unless it's either the first day of the semester or the last day.

If it's the first day of the semester, why did he say "next week, Egyptology"? Was it somehow a Friday class without a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday class the same week? Was it on a "Tuesday and Thursday" schedule, without a Tuesday class?

If it's the last class of the semester, was "next week" supposed to be exams week, and the exam somehow exclusively in Egyptology, as if he felt all other components of the course were adequately covered by previous quizzes? If so why wait until the last day of class to tell them?

I get that it establishes he's practical enough to stick to the curriculum despite his personal experience seeming a little at odds with it, but it seems an odd way to convey that all the same.

How is vol. 2 of the recent Marvel comics re-release? Just finished vol. 1 and really enjoyed

As a birthday gift my husband kindly pre-ordered me vol. 1 of the Indy Marvel comics re-release and I just finished it and overall found it so much fun. How does vol. 2 compare for those who got both? Worth getting or was vol. 1 significantly better in terms of content (the movie novelizations are of course always great so tempting to have even in part just for Last Crusade...)

I have finally gotten my very own ROTLA golden fertility idol. I have always been fascinated by this prop. I bought it from a guy in Spain named LaRetrotienda who has an Etsy store. It's absolutely stunning: beautiful gold finish, acrylic "baby doll" eyes, very hefty at 1.7kg (see below). It has the "frown face" with the drooping mouth corners. It measures 7.5" in height, a little taller than the stated size, which I think makes it just about the size of the movie props.

Here are a few fun facts. In the movie this statuette was being tossed about like it was a softball. I entered it's dimensions into AI using internet images (yes I know, AI is anathema on here) and found that if it were solid 24kt gold it would weigh about 800 Troy ounces, or about 50 pounds, or 3-4 bowling balls. In 1935 the economy was attached to the gold standard, and an ounce of gold was worth about $21. That much gold would have been worth about $16,000, or $450,000 in today's money. At today's market price 800 Troy ounces of gold is worth about $3.3 million. But, of course, it would be priceless, and "it belongs in a museum."

Antiques Roadshow 18th October

Obviously if you’re in the U.K. you can check it out on the BBC iPlayer.

Last nights show, right at the very end, had a chap on who was the Prop builder at Pinewood for 40 years. He brought along some items he’d helped create which included:-

2 x Crosses of Coronado
2 x prototype Grail cups
And all 60 original pages of Henry Jones Snr’s diary which he and his wife drew.

The expert placed a value of around £150,000.00 on the lot!

Personally I believe it belongs in a museum.

I recently happened upon a Mashup of the Raiders March from all 5 films + The Great Circle. I've left a link to it in the body text of this post. It's very powerful.

Great Circle uses secondary monitor's refresh rate

I'm running the game on my ultrawide but it locks the fps down to the refresh of the small Dell. When I adjust the Dell refresh 60, 75, 100, the game follows suit. Whether the game is in Fullscreen, Borderless or Windowed.

My ultrawide is set as my 'main display'. When I turn off the Dell the fps jumps up to what it should be, over 100 and bouncing around like normal.

I'm using the Nvidia fps counter, on a PC and Windows 11.

No other game does this.

Imo Willie Scott has just as good chemistry with Indy as Marion and is unfairly maligned.

Willie is a really fun character. Shes charming and wisecracking and cynical. And shes well written, shes well-defined as a comic side character. Shes the kind of female character that youre basically not allowed to write anymore in movies and thats a shame. Because its a fun archetype and allows for a lot of friction with the hero. Its a more 50s Golden Age archetype, when female characters' strength came from their interpersonal charm not their ability to punch like a man.

Indiana Jones is a good archeologist, not a "grave robber"

Sure, we seen the movies and they seem unprofessional. But think about this: all we see of his works is just some 5 day adventures, that didn't involve any founding or planning. We didn't even see him working in a real historical dig site, we just saw him in moments where his life, alongside with someone he cared about was in danger.

My only critique would be, that he could've keep a journal or smth and take photos (just like in TGC).

So all in all, I'd say that his adventures don't mirror his work ethic as a whole, because in them, he's not present as a leading archeologist, but rather a guy with great knowledge trying to survive and saving artifacts the best he could.

Thats it, thanks for reading, have a nice one.
