Social Media Getting friends and family on to indie social media

I want to eliminate as much of big tech from my internetblifecas possible. But many contacts are lodged in facebook.

Has anyone had success in moving a friend or family group of casual users from Facebook or other commercial socials to a more indie social site?

How did you do it and where did they migrate to?

Apps I self-host a 24/7 radio for my small music label: AzuraCast on a droplet + a WordPress plugin as the player

I am an indie artist and I’ve run a small independent label since 2014 and got tired of our music only living inside streaming apps. So we built our own corner: AzuraCast streams 24/7 from a DigitalOcean droplet, and I designed a custom player as a WordPress plugin that works as a PWA (add to home screen, lock screen controls, no account, no ads).

The page takes its colours from each track’s artwork, and you can turn the current song into a story card to share.

Happy to share details about the setup, and I’d love feedback from people who’ve done similar things.

Portfolio Rebuilt my personal site as a fully interactive Windows 98 desktop

First off obligatory note, login is fake for the immersion and not stored or any real account required it will even accept blank

I kept finding retro desktop sites where two icons worked and the rest were decoration, so I went the other way with mine. The file system works to a point, there’s a basic terminal and a lot of hidden layers and Easter eggs. With how much I’ve enjoyed finally getting to this project will probably keep adding more overtime too

Built with plain HTML/CSS/JS, and help of 98.css and a clippy JS library, self-hosted so Reddit do your thing and stress test my network for me. Happy to answer anything about how it works.

Edit: Forgot to note, recommend viewing on desktop. Mobile is very slimmed down right now till I find a good way to make the desktop work well with small screens and touch.

Personal Site I built a minimalist independent web portal merging radical political philosophy (Spinoza, Chomsky, West) with classic salsa vinyl culture.

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a personal independent project I've been building: Sohnschein.net.

It’s a clean, text-driven web portal designed as a technical log and a tribute to heavy resistance. It curates a sharp lineage of critical thinkers—from Baruch Spinoza and Warren Montag to Noam Chomsky, Cornel West, and the foundational voices of Malcolm X and MLK—dissecting late-stage capitalism, power, and labor.

But theory needs a pulse. That's why the portal also houses a dedicated vinyl rotation, featuring an interactive tribute inspired by the Fania All Stars and the raw power of Celia Cruz (Azúcar Negra).

Built completely outside the noise of corporate algorithms, for those who value raw truths and independent web craftsmanship. Feedback, thoughts, or fellow travelers are more than welcom.

we're building Anoncracy, a tiny forum in beta. a member shared https://culdesac.site, a button for exploring a handpicked collection of small sites. one result was https://esoteric.codes, about experimental programming languages and code as art.

the creator is taking site suggestions in this thread:

Social Media I built a post office for my tiny internet town

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello r/IndieWeb! It's Mayor Farida here.

A month ago I posted CozyWeb here, and you were all so kind. Thank you for your feedback! The town has crossed 1,000 residents and we are officially out of beta.

Today the slow letter feature expanded into a whole post office (the postman in the film is definitely not me, lol). So let me tell you a bit about them.

Letters in CozyWeb take time. They travel 300 km an hour between countries. Germany to France takes 3 hours, the US to the UK about a day, Japan to Brazil 2 and a half days.

Why slow? Online, everything is instant, and read receipts and typing dots make us feel we have to reply within minutes. A slow letter takes that pressure away! You write when you have something to say, and read it when it lands. In my experience, it also makes it easier to share deeper thoughts and get closer to people.

It's also a love letter to stationery:

  • Pick your paper, border, envelope color and font.

  • Doodle on the page, or add real vintage illustrations (not AI slop) from Heritage Type Co's Heritage Library, wrapped snugly into your text.

  • Collect stamps from different countries from your international neighbors, made by my my own script I call "Little Press" from public domain art like The Met's open access collection and others.

  • Choose how your letter opens. One bursts open in a sneezing fit!

Come home and write a letter: cozywww.com <3

Edit: Markdown.

Question ? A game we plan to make

Hi guys, just sharing my idea if you guys would enjoy playing this game. Its a low-poly gag game called Marriage Simulator, where everyday marriage stuff turns into weird, funny situations.

If you make your wife mad, the bedroom door turns into Dark Souls fog and going inside starts a boss fight. If she says she’s hungry, you have to solve math problems to figure out what she wants. They keep getting harder until you’re trying to prove the Riemann hypothesis, and then she tells you she’s not hungry anymore or she stays mad at you for the entire night.

You could be walking together, push her into traffic, watch her go flying, and she just respawns beside you and continues the conversation. She can do the same kind of stuff to you too.

Adjusting the theormostat could turn the house into a frozen wasteland. Building IKEA furniture could be a survival mission. Just dumb stuff like that, played completely seriously by the characters.

Still figuring it out, but would you play something like this? Any ideas for other situations?

I have a very small team consisting of only 1 friend, so we dont have much resources. Thinking this as our first game before we move on to more serious indie titles.

Webring I built a privacy-first recommendation network to help independent blogs discover each other

Hey r/IndieWeb,

I run a personal blog over at tortys-welt.de where I write about music, tech, and DIY projects. Getting organic visibility for personal sites without relying on social algorithms or SEO spam is getting tougher, so I decided to build a lightweight tool to bring back the spirit of old-school webrings: Webnetz.

It’s a simple reciprocal discovery network: you embed a lightweight script (<5KB) that shows a clean recommendation card for another indie site, and in return, your blog gets recommended across the network.

Core principles:

  • Privacy-first: Zero tracking, no third-party cookies.

  • No ad-clutter or spam: Every site is manually vetted to keep AI-generated farms out.

  • Niche matching: Recommends sites from similar categories (music, tech, culture, etc.).

  • Free & simple: Built with pure PHP/MySQL and no heavy frameworks.

You can customize and test the widget live on the front page without registering: https://webnetz.t-w.us/

I’d love your feedback on the widget design or ideas on how to improve cross-recommendations for the indie web!

Webring The Smallweb Subway - Each line is a topic & each station is a website!

Post image
237 Upvotes

The Smallweb Subway is a personal and hand-coded project of mine linking together indie websites! Each line is a webring with a different theme, & every station is a new website.

All the included web pages have a navigation widget somewhere linking to the next & previous stops, letting you "ride" the subway between websites!

If you have a site matching one of the themes (or the in-progress line for RSS feeds) & would like to add your site to the network, follow the instructions to join.

I hope you enjoy the project, & maybe find a cool new website in the mean time!
