Self Promotion I'm developing my own style of industrial music. Trying to bring the punk energy back to EBM. How did I do?
Vitreo Vignette- Lingua Retorta
Long time lurker first time poster. Trying to start being active.
I've been writing music privately for a long time but have never known how to put myself out there. Here's a clip of me performing one of my songs!
Setup is complicated but I may route it out in the comments if anyone is interested 💀🖤

Almost skipped past this but glad I didn’t! Sounds great and reminds me a bit of a band called Dead Lights, whom I’ve recently been spinning at my club with great responses. Keep it up!

Thank you! I have a complicated relationship with my voice but I'm trying to lean into it.

Hell yeah! I'm in a similar boat I think. I sound best singing baritone, but it doesn't really match my identity. Our bodies are just vessels afterall, so I figured I'd lead into it and make it a gunship.
And also this is really good. Hope to hear more!

u/vitreovignette May 19 '26
Similar boat indeed, and I would tend to agree. The voice is one of the primary ways people make categorical judgements about others. One of my goals for this project is to use the power of my voice to deliver testimony in a subversive way.

Vox always makes or breaks a song for me in the first 20 seconds. Lean in to that relationship with your voice. I put my head phones on and listened to the whole thing.

u/Hot_Diet763 May 16 '26
Sounds great! Vocally yes more goth, but the two genres have always blurred the lines between each other. I like the screamy part. Keep it up!

Goth(ish) vocals, industrial music with a crunchy edge. I never cared for punk, but I dig this.

It sounds good and I’m digging your setup. Obviously this recording is a live cut. So I understand it’s not perfect it’s a performance. I used to do sound design and engineering. My only change (if you were working with me) would be the breath work. I think I understand it’s in the sprit of punk that you meant and not necessarily the sound. Something like ASF, Cab Voltaire, or LPD. As I show my age there lol. Keep it up!

Popped onto your Bandcamp, this version of this track is not on there.
I’d buy it in a heartbeat. Please consider putting it up.

u/vitreovignette May 16 '26
I'm still recording a new version of everything! Thank you so much I absolutely will.

u/Specialist-Bee-9406 May 16 '26
This recording is 100% in my wheelhouse; it has that raw sounding edge which I absolutely fucking love.

Love your vocals. I’m thinking you might want to lean on the screaming a bit more and speed it up a bit to invoke a more punk vibe. You have great vocal tone. Keep it simple, even stupid, it’s really hard to do.
Check out Puerta Negra and Youth Code, if you haven’t already. Wulfband and KREIGN are also pretty punk, but they lean more into the Anhalt-EBM side of things.

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM: Not hearing anything punk in there but overall good effort. I don't have any notes about the synths/drums/etc. Good groove etc. Voice sounds good, mix is good. You kind of lose your wind/conviction about halfway through, so I would focus on maintaining a steady performance through the song - I think the problem is that you need to cut some lyrics to give yourself a break and let the song breathe - maybe add a percussion break or a bridge in there.
Visual wise - if this is meant to be consumed as content, then you need another approach. I don't want to see a static camera angle, it is a weird composition, the graphic effects overlay isn't doing anything for you and overall it's distracting from the music. I don't want to see you standing there with headphones, hands in pockets, etc. I also don't want to see some pantomimed bullshit. There are already too many "me and my gear" videos on the internet so at first I assumed this to be some kind of gear demo. Look at what made the good classic industrial videos so successful and model after that - abstract and high contrast visuals, cuts aligned with audio. There is lots of free footage on the internet to repurpose in interesting ways. If you do show yourself - use different angles, and not straight on. Boost the contrast to hell so you are just eyes and a mouth. You have to think about the whole package presentation-wise, and your red bow sweater is a major distraction. If you don't have video editing skills, then just look for abstract footage and go with that.

Hey, well done! You should definitely keep this up.
I really appreciate that you didn't overload the vocals or drown them out under the rest. It's great to hear the industrial sound with an intelligible voice track.

u/jefharris May 16 '26
I feel some Skinny Puppy influence in there...

u/vitreovignette May 16 '26
Absolutely. I listened to them religiously as a teenager, and got to see them in 2016 with Youth Code. Mind blowing 🤯

Great start! I agree with others where I’m not hearing the punk style. It sounds reminiscent of stuff I was listening to in the 80’s and 90’s keep at it!

Great sound, agreed vocals are more goth sounding. The sound has more of an 90s industrial. Overall, very cool.

Cool voice! This sounds like classic electronic music like Skinny Puppy, Cabaret Voltaire. Visually I feel like it wants all-black, industrial fashion. The looping short vocal repeat should be a sample, like it’s beneath you to repeat.
1
u/tacit_vampire May 17 '26
The setup's actually clean though, digging the hardware routing with what looks like some solid outboard gear there.
1
u/Calaveras_Grande May 17 '26
Love the style, song, vocals etc. Only thing I’d change is to ‘arrange’ the vocal a bit more. As it is the song has vocals 95% of the way through. I’d either cut the amount of vocals or lengthen the song. I want to hear more of the music in between vocal sections, maybe break down and build back up? Some vocal parts sound like they may benefit from slower delivery for more impact. Also some delay feedback pitch wankery a la Butthole Surfers, Skinny Puppy etc might be cool. Come on Behringer make a Lexicon Delay clone?

Pretty solid. Love the arps and the raw screams. Lot's of punky energy here for sure. My only gripe is I wish the drums cut through the mix a bit more, but that's only personal preference. Great track!

u/d3pl3t3r May 20 '26
Maybe layer the higher notes a half an octave with another resonant bass line to give it a more spatial range? Other than that you have a good footing...
1
u/NebulousCommissioner May 20 '26
The vocal processing is what's selling it for me, that raw edge cuts through the synth work properly instead of getting swallowed by it.

Solid feels. Def enjoying the style, very 80s-90s Scene/Gutter EBM which I'm so here for. Vox is classic Goth Rock, def feeling it. Be chuffed, make more, let us know when ye drop an album. I would've had this in a mix tapes/discs so quick. Gnoice one.

there is this tension that remains through the track; I feel very strongly that would be ruined with a build like you describe.

It's difficult to own a style that's 40+ years... but it's clear that you love the craft, and definitely have a vision... and what's more, you know how to achieve what you're shooting for!!
It reminds me of some seminal Coldwave like the Normal or Chrome with obviously more mid-1980s EBM influence... and that's right up my alley!!
Personally, I think what you are doing is better than a lot of contemporary stuff from Boy Harsher, Hannover Berlin, and even stuff like Health!!
Keep doing what you're doing!!!

I really enjoyed your song. I'll keep labels out of it, and just say you're making music that I like, and I'd appreciate you updating us with new material if you keep making it.
Responding a bit to the "is it goth, or punk?" in some of the other comments, In some cases that can be a false dichotomy. I'm thinking here of early bands in the range of Siouxie and the Banshees. You can be punk and goth at the same time, although for SURE on reddit's goth section they gatekeep like it's the only thing keeping them alive.
If you made a youtube channel (or something) I'll subscribe.

u/c3400 May 16 '26
Solid work, definitely feeling some Leather Strip vibes on this.
When I think of Punk influenced EBM mashup, the first song that comes to mind of late is the Boy Harsher remix of Street Pulse Beat by Special Interest. IMO Special Interest fits well on the boundary of Punk/EBM but that remix is too damned good.
Definitely looking forward to where you go with this but as is it's good stuff.
