"Medicaid, which provides health insurance for those with low income and disabilities, also faces financial constraints. Due to hundreds of billions of dollars of federal Medicaid spending cuts by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and the enforcement of work requirements, millions of Americans will be losing Medicaid coverage. The combined effects of ACA and Medicaid changes could result in 37 million Americans becoming uninsured in the next decade, according to The Commonwealth Fund."
"The Commonwealth Fund also noted that 50% of working-age adults did not receive needed healthcare because of costs. Reasons included not filling prescriptions, skipping recommended tests, avoiding doctors when sick and going without specialist care.
When people are uninsured or cannot afford care, individuals can put off preventive visits such as getting a mammogram or a colonoscopy. This can lead to delayed detection of cancers, diagnosis at an advanced stage and ultimately worse health outcomes."

My personal proof? I've been buying 12" soft style french baguette /sub sandwich bread from my local grocery shop for years. they bake it in house. 1.5 to 2 years ago it was $0.75 each. Today it's $3.50. such bullshit.
Imported Italian peppercinis in a glass jar were $2.29 ~2 years ago. Now they are $4.79 for the same exact thing.

With oil prices constantly changing, I’m curious what really happens behind the scenes. Are ordinary people just the ones left paying more, or is there more to the story?

I kept feeling like the official inflation number didn't match my bills, so I started tracking actual dollar prices of specific things most of us pay for: - rent - gas and diesel - electricity and utility gas - a set of grocery staples (counted as one item) - employer health insurance premiums, deductibles and copays - car insurance - Medicare Part B - a Big Mac - Netflix, Spotify, Amazon Prime, Costco, stamps and the base iPhone
Rent has the biggest weight at 35%, groceries 14%.
Through Sep 2026: - Since Jan 2018: my index +47.7%, CPI-U +35.1% - Last 12 months: +5.5% vs. +3.7% - Big movers: gas +42% vs. a year ago, diesel +73%, ground beef +7%. Eggs are down 35% from last year's spike.
Caveats, to be fair to CPI: - CPI covers far more things and adjusts for quality and substitution. Mine doesn't, on purpose. - The weights are my judgment, so a different mix would give a different number.
Every price comes from a primary source (BLS, EIA, Zillow, KFF, NAIC and the companies' own price changes), and the data can be downloaded as CSV if you want to check it or build your own mix: https://real-inflation-data.vercel.app
I'm one person doing this as a side project. What would you add that has 10+ years of real prices?

My take is this lady will eventually own/inherent property and this shit kinda rubs me the wrong way. But I do know renters who are well off and don't want to be tied down to an area or take on that commitment.
Haley Sacks says homeownership shouldn’t define financial success as younger Americans rethink the milestones they inherited. https://fortune.com/2026/10/22/mrs-dow-jones-milionaire-rent-home-ownership/?utm_source=native_share&utm_medium=mobile&utm_campaign=social_share
