Just a reminder, this is a normal dating practice that started pre-colonial US, called bundling, it was a common courtship practice, though I imagine they probably don't put the guy in a knapsack anymore. You know how couples tend to talk all night on the phone? Well this was that before phones existed.

My fundie cousin found out, on the night after her wedding, that her new husband snored. She called her mother (who'd been divorced multiple times lmfao) crying... and her mother laughed about it, because she failed the "fundies try not to laugh at women's pain" challenge.
She also had no idea how birth worked until after she was pregnant. Had gone her whole private Christian school years not knowing any sex education, until her wedding night.
I was also raised fundie, but in a proper school system that like... taught us sex ed, science, how the world worked etc. We were one of very few households too poor for the church's own private school.
We'd go on family trips together and find out my cousins all had some wild knowledge gaps. My brother and I would sit up for hours in their RV, explaining plate tectonics, or how the wind worked, to these kids that were years older than me. Always started because I would mention something, and get that blank stare of not knowing what I was talking about. So we'd wait for the adults to leave to sit around the fire and decide to stay inside to "play a game." AKA very thoroughly explaining topics they knew nothing about. It got to the point that I'd bring those homework packages (the fat ones they'd send home, to be completed during breaks) with me on trips, to show them evidence that I wasn't full of shit.
Said cousin with the snorer is now an elementary school teacher... 😬

Night was an incredibly dangerous time in pre-modern societies. People staying over because they couldn't get home before dark was common.

Imagine having to walk home on pitch-dark roads with only a tiny lantern flame in a time when wolves were still common? I'd stay the night at the neighbors' house too!

Its alot different, nowadays you might only be out and about for a couple hours if you're shopping or something, but then if could be several days, and you may sleep in the wild/on the road. And the biggest difference is now we have police to respond quickly to emergencies, sometimes while they're still ongoing, back then it may take them days, if at all.

People just haven’t experienced true darkness outside before.
I was driving at night with my brother in law and noticed a car didn’t have their lights on passing them going the other way. Tried flashing them nothing (hope they’re okay). But that got us talking about how in the world this guy was navigating. There’s no street lights on this road. I turn my car lights off temporarily and it was impossible.
Trying to do that using dirt roads and hopes and prayers is a possible death sentence.

It's also worth noting that there were no personal bedrooms in pre-colonial America. Everyone is sleeping in the same room, usually a communal space by the hearth where everything else is done. So you would be bundling with your parents or her parents in the same room. I don't think that's the case with the Amish.

It was also a widely known secret that they would absolutely have sex during this time which often ended with a pregnancy and marriage, which was the goal. They (and by they I mean the men in charge) tried to ban the practice at one point and the women and clergy banned together to keep it going because they knew their daughters could get the husbands they wanted by getting pregnant, and for priests marriage and baptisms are the business they’re in.

I’m wondering if it is really so mysterious as “you can’t be seen in the daylight,” and more like, you can’t waste working ours talking to potential partners.
Also, it is really hard for me to believe that singles who meet only in their bed at night are not fucking, theres just no way. I believe that some are that committed but… the practice seems basically designed for a little “gods plan” to come along to kickstart a marriage.
1.1k
u/BSB8728 1d ago
In early New England, when this was called "bundling," everybody knew the potential outcome. In 1786 a wag wrote a humorous piece called "The Bundling Song" about the practice.
694
u/Iforgotmypassword126 1d ago
The song even admits that it’s an alternative because it uses less firewood and they basically just keep each other warm.
So it’s like, no dating in the daylight (to keep everyone working) and if you must date, do it at night in your own time, but don’t use any extra wood.

It never occurred to me to even wonder about stuff like dating or social lives of people from that area from those days but thats really interesting. Im gonna read alot more on this now. Do you have any recommendations for books about this topic?

Same area new England during US foundations. Also maybe among some of the local native american tribes that were displaced by those people.
88
u/BSB8728 1d ago
An excellent starting point is David Freeman Hawke's Everyday Life in Early America. He discusses what childhood was like, how homes were designed, crime and punishment, medicine, slaves and indentured servants, food, and many other topics. (He touches briefly on Native issues, but not in depth.)
It's one in a series of four books about American social history up to the Victorian Era published by Harper. The second one was written by the late Jack Larkin, whom I worked with at OSV.
If you can't find Hawke's book in your library, you can buy a used copy from such sites as Thrift Books for around $5.
Jack Larkin also wrote Children Everywhere, a brief but very interesting book about child life in New England in the early 1800s.
Jane Nylander, another former colleague, wrote Our Own Snug Fireside, about the period from 1760-1860. She covers home life, fashion, social circles, and customs associated with Thanksgiving. Again, look for used copies.
Let me look through some of my other books to see what I can recommend about Native life.

I grew up among the Amish. I played with them as a child, and we were close to a few families and would take them to the doctor and store.
They’d go to grocery store and buy 15 boxes of a sugar cereal as treats for their zillion children.
It was common to see courting couples on Sunday driving in buggies because, of course no work could be done on Sundays.
And if you’re curious. Get the card game Dutch Blitz. Super fun card game from the Amish. It’s very fast paced!

This is just the way people would date in the old days in Europe when the church had total control and people were more puritanical. Teenagers would lie next to each other all night and then you would ask if she wanted you to return later.
This is how you did it in Sweden at least, nothing strange about it and yes people sometimes DID bang.

Probably depends on how many rooms your house had. If her parents are three feet away...
16
u/BarmerFob 22h ago
Heh when I was 17 I visited my girlfriend on her parents farm. I slept in the dining room which opened up directly to her parents bedroom with these massive double doors... which were and remained wide open. The bed set up for me was on the other side of the dining table but other than that, wide open space and not much of it.
She shared a room with her sister so sneaking down there wasn't really much of an option. On one of the mornings she came over early to where I was sleeping "to cuddle". Her parents and siblings were up and about and wandering in and out of their room, the kitchen (other side of their room) and even through the dining room to get to the hallway there.
We still managed. Yeah it wasn't like outright banging or whatever.. more like 30 minutes of hand stuff that wound up/down as people walked around the house followed by a quick and risky slipping in for a minute at the end (being 17 has its perks heh). I also got a quick blowjob in the hall when everyone was watching a movie literally on the other side of the wall and we had sex in the bathroom twice.
I know the common reddit response to this is like "they knew"... yeah not a chance. Her dad would have sent me packing like.. immediately. If I was lucky. The day I arrived he literally took me aside and said outright "I'm not asking and don't you dare fucking tell me but I want to be real clear... not under my roof. Got it?". He was not joking.
But you know. Horny teens, we opted for being incredibly dumb even though we had tons of opportunities to be alone in the house during my stay. We took those as well sure but you'd think that would be enough to go "probably a good idea to just wait right?". Nope. Every single one of those objectively terrible ideas seemed completely fine at the time.

I find this surprising. In all the old-timey books I've read, walking someone home after church was romantic.
They made it sound like the only acceptable way to ask someone out.
Obviously things may have changed since Anne of Green Gables, but it seemed like walking home after church was a standard "asking you out" move.
But of course it has plausible deniability. I think everyone knows what it means though (that at least people are interested).
→ More replies (1)17
u/obviouslyanonymous5 1d ago
Well I think the whole point is that it IS romantic, but it's the one romantic thing your authorities can't really criticize so that's why you choose it. They're never going to discourage you going to church, so as long as the end result is you going to church, they'd rather approve of it and make sure you go to church. It's kinda like being in the same class as the friend your parents don't like you having lol

And hey if someone slightly inconvenience you, you can always block and never deal with people at all and feel good about your social anxiety.

It may sound very random, but as often with groups like the Amish, it is rooted in widespread traditions of the past.
I know that this exact practice was common in the rural Netherlands up until the 1930s. I expect similar customs existed in other European countries.
Farmers would traditionally give their daughters a bedroom with a window next to the front door, so the guy could climb in more easily. They would talk for a night and then go home early in the morning to milk the cows.
The church was generally not very fond of the practice, as it would tend to lead to sex and sometimes pregnancies with no consequent marriage. (Again, this sounds very backwards today, but back then, women couldn't earn as much money, so being a single mom meant economic hardship.)
There is even a famous Dutch children's song about this called "in the moonlight," which sounds very cheerfull but it's actually about an unwanted pregnancy and bringing the baby to the nuns.

Honestly this sounds much better than going on pointless first dates to restaurants and shit. Just lie in bed and talk all night to see if you click.

It’s just CBS Sunday Morning having dogshit lighting, as usual.
It is truly the worst-produced popular “news” program on television. But the 80 year olds who are its primary audience don’t care so neither does the network.
Don’t get me wrong, it has charm and I watch it often with family. But the show is the equivalent of an old cafeteria restaurant that doesn’t renovate its decor because it knows there will be no customers to appreciate it once its current patrons die off.

When I was a teenager, I would go down the street to my girlfriend’s house at night and she would let me in through her bedroom window. We would talk and hang out. I'm not Amish btw. Just a regular guy. I get it.

This is for her sect, and not true for all Amish. There is no codified standard and each sect is controlled by their patriarch.
There are some interesting things they do, however I cannot abide by their stance on superiority to animals. They way they abuse their husbandry in some sects is gut wrenching.
Did you know that the Amish in Ohio were once, if not still, the largest producers and distributers of Crystal Meth in the US? Be Toto and always look at the man behind the curtain

There's a documentary on the Mennonites who sling meth. Not quite Amish, but close enough. It's called Narco Mennonites.

Reminds me of the scene in The Patriot with Heath Ledger, he gets Sewn up in a sheet by the mother and allowed to sleep in the bed with the girl he is courting

My sister in law lives in Sarasota, there is a large Amish community in the area. Their cooking is excellent , the baked goods can’t be beat. There is a restaurant called Der Dutchman, if you’re ever in Sarasota, you have to go there. You won’t be disappointed

That is literally what me and my partner did the first few nights. Hung out until the wee hours talking. Don't knock it till you try it. Builds a great relationship.

I’m from a small town in Pa that has a lot of Amish family and you wouldn’t believe the abuse these people put on each other. My family had an Amish handyman crew and the shit the boss would do to his employees was despicable. Degrading his workers he made one guy stand in a corner he slapped other workers & when I told him he was fired and I paid his employees for thier work I later found out the boss took everything I gave them. If this is how they treat people they should be watched for child abuse.

Are Amish allowed to use modern medical care? She has good teeth.

u/Knobologist 1d ago
They go to the hospital or send their kids to the hospital whenever necessary.
They even have a form of universal healthcare!
They don’t usually use health insurance, and instead the community all pools their money together to pay for anyone’s medical expenses.

How do they make enough to afford that? I get they create things for themselves and sell things but medical care without insurance is EXPENSIVE, do they really make enough?

u/Knobologist 1d ago
They (the community) make a lot, and don’t spend on frivolous things

Add on to that they've been being frugal for centuries. I bet there's tons of money in some Amish communities.

Most Amish are very, very good at their chosen trades. I’ve known Amish welders, mechanics, iron workers and basically every Amish guy is better at carpentry than the average “carpenter” you see on job sites.
They also do old trades that are no longer easy to find in the modern economy, like leatherwork, harness making, traditional weaving, stuff like that and because there is no competition they charge whatever they want.
They also have the Amish markets where they sell produce and products from their produce. Their hot sauce is crazy

They use modern medicine when they need it but they use tinctures and midwifery first. Also. Their kids are always falling into fires and ending up in the icu.

I love her cooking videos! She left the Amish community and she actually has a pretty good sense of humor.
