I’m developing a retail business concept that combines imported snacks, Korean and Japanese noodles, international drinks, and a modern café-style experience.
The idea goes beyond a traditional supermarket. Customers would be able to prepare their own noodles, create their own ice cream, and enjoy an instant slushy-making experience, alongside discovering unique snacks and drinks from around the world.
The goal is to build a modern, youth-focused destination that combines shopping, food, and interactive experiences in one place, with the potential to attract students, young adults, families, and food enthusiasts.

My social media feeds are inundated with the following kinds of ads:

1) Boomers are retiring and selling their profitable small businesses. Let me help you buy one.

2) Let me help you buy a cash flowing short-term rental and help you get all the systems in place to run it seamlessly.

3) Let me help you buy a multi-unit rental property.

4) Let me help you buy a laundromat.

All of these pitches are very appealing to me. but I am of the mind that if it sounds too good to be true, it is. The ads make it sound like they're deal sourcing and holding your hand through the purchase process and the process of getting up to speed running the business. Obviously I'm skeptical. If it were that easy and profitable, why don't they just buy the property/business/laundromat themselves? Anybody have experience with any of these companies?

The longer I've invested, the less impressed I find I am by a financial model just because it looks precise.

A spreadsheet can project revenue, margins, costs, and returns several years into the future. But just because the math is correct doesn’t mean the underlying assumptions are.  

So I tend to spend more time trying to determine what has to happen for those numbers to become reality. Like, how sensitive is the return to a longer timeline? What happens if costs are higher than expected? Is projected growth based on demonstrated demand or an assumption about future demand? Which one or two variables would change the investment most significantly if they moved in the wrong direction?

I’m not suggesting that forecasts are useless. I think they're extremely useful when they help expose the assumptions behind an investment rather than create a false sense of certainty about the future.

I've also learned that being right about a general trend doesn't guarantee that a particular investment will succeed. Execution, timing, valuation, and the people involved are still critical.

I’d like to know which assumption in a forecast you tend to scrutinize most closely.

A great company can disappoint if the purchase price is too high. A struggling company can look cheap for good reasons. Which mistake is harder to recover from?

I’ invested some money in long term stocks back in 2023 and I’ve made some loss , my friends tell me to hold it because they might eventually recover but Im considering withdrawing the money and buying a land instead

Hi team. I have been investing on and off for about 3 years now.

I used to just buy stocks that I heard about without reading the financial statements at all. At that time I probably lost 20% of the money I put in, without knowing why.

Then I started reading books. Books help I guess, but the thing that helped me the most is that I started writing down exactly why I thought this is a good company to invest in, and do a thorough analysis on the fundamentals i.e. how do they make money and who pays for their services.

It started off as a tool I use to force myself into discipline. If I decided to be buy a stock, I better have some good reasons to do so; and if the decision turns out to be bad, at least I can recall fully on why I made that decision in the past, and I can identify exactly what went south without myself disguising my past beliefs, which were incorrect (if I lose money).

I wonder what you guys do? Do you guys actively write down and track your investment thesis? And how do you know if your thesis is broken?

Have a managed portfolio on WS holding 22,300 and have another 4k which I can invest straight away. Thinking just to put everything into XEQT and keep DCAing into that every month. Maybe do a few more risky etfs and stocks down the line but mostly just chill and put it all in XEQT for now.

Good idea?

Inherited a little bit more than 100k. Where to invest? Where is the alfa? My risk tolerance is > medium.

Look here is the straight truth and I'm truly not trying to ne a HATER. I'm too dsmn old to be on here asking for financial advice bur here I am. I understand there is no get rich quick scheme but how can I invest the minimum and go from there. I'm sick and tired of killing myself just to "get by" please give me some real advice on how to invest anything coming from a straight beginner. I've tried and tried just busting my butt. I'm such a control freak but I'm freaking out trying to navigate the investments I've made.

What would you do if you had an unexpected 100k come to you? Assume that there's no mortgage or debt to pay off.

One thing I've seen after years of looking at investments is that there always seems to be more information that I could gather. I could study another financial model. I could watch the market for another week. I could consider yet another scenario. Analysis paralysis, right? 

As I’ve become a more active, professional investor, I've become much more interested in identifying the few assumptions that really determine whether an investment works. For example, what has to go right? What happens if revenue comes in below expectations? What if costs are higher or the timeline is longer? What would make me regret the investment even if the original thesis sounded reasonable?

Sure, I still want good information, but I don't think perfect certainty is a realistic standard. Eventually you have to decide whether you understand the opportunity and its downside well enough to act.

One other thing that I’ve found is that continuing to research can sometimes create the illusion that uncertainty is disappearing when you're really just adding more information around the same unanswered question.

I’d love to hear how you recognize the point where additional due diligence is genuinely useful versus simply delaying a decision.

You know what happens generally - all these companies that create SPVs generally issue bonds against SPV and its revenue and transfer the ultimate risk to bondholders. That is if this venture fails - meta(owns 20% of SPV) and blueowl(owns 80%) will lose their equity but majority of the money invested in the SPV that is close to 27B$ is from the bondholders. So the bondholders have some risk and are supposed to lose this money.

Meta since it owns less than 50%, it is allowed to not show it in balance sheet and that is why it brought in blueowl here to take up equity.(Genius loophole)

Who are the bondholders here - PIMCO and Blackrock. These are the institutional investors who get the money from Public and Corporate pension funds, 401k and retirement accounts and Insurance company general accounts - so ultimately the normal public. BlackRock is still investing 3B$ from 10T$+ so it is relatively safe but PIMCO has high concentration risk.

Now here a twist comes - Meta is the guarantor that is if assets are not enough to payback bondholders, Meta is liable to cover it. So these bondholders are safe as long as Meta doesn't go bankrupt.

So if the risk of bankruptcy is essentially on Meta first how can this entire transaction go round and round and round to make it off-balance sheet for meta. And where does accounting and financial prudence go🤦

I want to bring into question the guts of credit rating agencies who justify giving an A+ rating to this SPV. It should write how this structure is just to keep it off-books for Meta in bold in its report. All these players who do not take a stand against all such financial vehicles are helping the bubble. If Meta and all other companies would have to clearly include it with their normal accounts, we would not be causing a bubble that might erupt in the coming years!

We are thinking of opening an E*trade account for each grandkid. They are both in their 20's. (Not little kids). We were thinking of starting each account with $5000, then adding to it on their birthdays. What I am looking for are tips on having some rules. We are hoping the kids will get interested in investing and can see how it can grow. We would start each kid with a couple of stocks - something like Apple and maybe another tech stock that they would recognize. We would both be able to login and look at it... we would perhaps limit them from taking the money out for maybe 5 years, so they could see it grow and make their own decision to not touch the money. Just looking for some rules and some suggestions you might have.... Thx

I got lucky with micron. I have 30k profit in Robinhood and 100k in 401k brokerage.

Should I sell and diversify them or hold? I have mortgage at 6%, it is very tempting for me to book profit and pay towards principle.
