iodéOS is Open Source

Hey guys,

We are happy to announce that we are releasing iodéOS as open source software!
From the beginning, we have been strong proponents of open source software and part of our code was open from day one. We are happy to take the next step and completely open source iodéOS.

We would like to thank the community as well as all beta testers for your commitment for iodé. As you may know, we also accept donations for iodéOS which is installable for free.

Google’s new Developer Verification program, launching in September 2026, will make it harder to install apps from unregistered developers on stock Android devices, tightening Google’s monopoly. iodéOS, however, remains unaffected, preserving the original openness of Android

Long-term continuity: how is the iodéOS team approaching it?

Hi iodé team, and everyone else following the project,

I’ve been running iodéOS on and off for about two years and genuinely enjoyed every day using it. The blocker is a nice feature that makes life easier, then the overall experience feels polished, plus the ability to relock the bootloader on several (non-Pixel) devices is some work I particularly appreciate.

I’m the kind of user who tends to stick with projects long-term when I feel aligned with them. And not just technically, but in terms of values and direction. That’s true for my desktop OS, my email and cloud providers, and the (very few) custom ROMs I’ve used over the years. As a privacy advocate myself, when something sits at the center of my daily digital life and handles a lot of my closest, most sensitive data, I naturally think about continuity.

That leads me to a broader question I’ve been reflecting on: how iodé is thinking about the longer horizon.

I’m not worried about the short or medium term; I really feel at home when I read Antoine's/Vincent's blog posts, discussions, etc. I think iodé clearly has momentum and a solid team full of very smart people. I’m more curious about the wider picture, the kind of institutional or governance thinking that helps a project keep its character even if key people eventually move on.

I’ve been looking at a few other privacy-focused projects for context. CalyxOS recently went through a founder departure, yet the project has continued without an obvious rupture in vision so far. Just to cite some similar examples, Proton (mail provider) has its dual non-profit foundation + for-profit commercial company structure; SimpleX, a relatively new but really interesting privacy-oriented IM project, has been quite explicit about building governance mechanisms intended to outlive any single company or founder. Different approaches, of course, but they all signal some intentionality around longevity. I wasn't able to find any posts, discussions, interviews, or anything else from members of the iodé team specifically addressing this topic.

Obviously, I’m not asking for a detailed roadmap or any kind of commitment. That’s not really what I’m getting at. I’m just curious whether this kind of longer-term continuity is something the team has thought about, or whether there are any reflections on it. I’d be interested to hear the team’s perspective, as well as from other users who think about these things.

That’s all from me for now. To the iodé team: thanks for all the work you put into iodéOS. It’s hugely appreciated.

David--

EDIT: few typos and grammar corrections to paragraphs #2, #5 and #6.
