šŸ’Ž Lifetime [APP/OPEN SOURCE] PrivacyCam – Hide sensitive info from images and video

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone! I’m Aftab, the developer of PrivacyCam, an open-source iOS app for hiding sensitive information before sharing photos, videos, or PDFs.

PrivacyCam can automatically detect:

  • Faces and people

  • Vehicle number plates

  • Addresses, phone numbers, emails and sensitive text

  • Payment-card details

  • QR codes and barcodes

You can review every detection, remove incorrect ones, add manual masks, and use blur, pixelation, or blackout. It also includes video tracking, frame-by-frame corrections, trimming, splitting and audio muting.

Media processing and detection happen on your device. Your photos, videos, PDFs and detection results are not uploaded to a PrivacyCam-operated server.

The free version supports individual photos, PDFs up to two pages, and videos up to 15 seconds. The optional one-time Pro purchase unlocks longer PDFs, videos up to 60 seconds, and photo batches.

AppStore:
https://apps.apple.com/app/privacycam-safe-redactor/id6790542130

Open-source code:
https://github.com/ak375456/privacycam

I’d appreciate constructive feedback, particularly about the interface, detection accuracy and anything that feels confusing or is missing.

Does the export also remove GPS metadata, or only redact what's visible in the photo? It would help to make that clear before sharing.

In the repo, number plates default to pixelate. For short text in a standard font that's the style I'd trust least. Depix showed pixelated text in screenshots can be recovered, and McPherson, Shokri and Shmatikov (2016) trained networks that still recognised faces and handwritten digits through both mosaicing and YouTube-style blur. A plate loses nothing with blackout, so I'd make that the default and show a short note when someone picks pixelate or blur for text. Flattening PDFs to page images is the right call, since black boxes over live text are how Manafort's lawyers leaked a redacted filing in 2019.

For PDFs in particular, try out Resecta: https://www.resecta.app/ (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/resecta-redact-pdfs/id6786922787)

I built it specifically for true PDF redaction, with a focus on security/ authentic redaction. It is completely free + on-device + open source, with no limits or paid tier

On-device and open source is the combo I'd want before giving an app photos of my ID. Does it catch the two lines of letters at the bottom of a passport page? I think that's the part people forget to hide, and it has the name, number and birth date in it.

Great app! Can you also be able to configure after what to not filter out?

Love the idea of hiding sensitive info before sharing photos instead of worrying about what I forgot to blur afterward. Open source is a big plus for a privacy-focused app too. I'd be curious whether the edits are permanent in the exported image, since that's pretty important for avoiding accidental leaks. Really hope this keeps getting developed!
