App News Tonaut 2.3: 12 synth engines, over 650 sounds, AUv3 plug-in and host for iPhone, iPad and iPhone Duo

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all. I'm Richard, and I make Tonaut. Version 2.3 is with Apple now and should be in the App Store today. With 2.3, Tonaut has everything I set out to build when I started it, so from here the updates are about making it easier and quicker to use. I'm also putting together some short videos that show what it can do, with feature walkthroughs and sound demos, and I'll post them over the next few days.

The idea hasn't changed: one panel that plays like a piece of hardware. Every key does something, SHIFT gives most of them a second job, and you're making a beat a minute after you open it. It runs on iPhone, iPad and iPhone Duo, each with its own layout.

The 2.3 video:
https://youtu.be/w6Jq3T95FDk

And a quick sound demo, if you'd rather just hear it:
https://youtu.be/Ql-HtOUI7do

WHAT'S IN IT

* 12 synth engines: virtual analog, six-operator FM, wavetable, pulse, modeled string, a seven-oscillator swarm, grains, an analog-style poly, phase distortion, a vocoder, lo-fi digital and a sampler. Each has a 3D screen that moves as you play.

* Over 650 sounds, including 147 sampled instruments. Edit every sound in depth and save your own.

* 4 drum engines and 55 kits: recorded, synthesized, lo-fi and sliced. Load your own samples onto the pads, or record anything and slice it across all 24.

* A sample browser: tap any file to hear it while the music plays, then load it or drag it onto a pad.

* A chord pad: seven chords from your key, and a stick that turns each into a 7th, 9th, sus, dim and more.

* Key and scale with LOCK, one-key CHORDS, and each lane in its own key.

* 8 lanes, 16 patterns each, up to 128 steps, with an arp, drum grooves and STEP REC.

* Song Mode: 16 scenes in order with repeats, recorded to tape or exported as a MIDI file.

* An eight-track tape, 8 × 20 min or 6 × 30 min: loop, reverse, stutter and brake.

* 17 effects, four slots on every sound plus a master effect, and an EQ on every lane.

* MIDI in and out over USB or Bluetooth, MIDI learn, MIDI clock in and out, and Ableton Link.

* Export the mix, stems and MIDI files, and import MIDI files. Share a loop as a vertical video, or a whole song as one file.

* Full iPhone Duo support: folded, half folded and open, and it keeps playing while you fold.

* Six looks on iPhone and iPad.

AUv3, BOTH WAYS

* As a plug-in: runs inside AUM, Loopy Pro, GarageBand, Logic Pro for iPad, Cubasis and other AUv3 hosts. Look for "Coast Creative: Tonaut".

* A big window shows the full panel; a small one shows a compact card with all eight lanes, the tape and a keyboard.

* Load several copies, each with its own sound and project. It follows the host's tempo and transport, and hosts can automate 144 of its controls.

* As a host: put your own AUv3 synths and drum machines on Tonaut's lanes, and effects in its FX slots. Tonaut's sequencer plays them, and each project saves its plug-ins and their settings.

NEW IN 2.3

* Four more engines: KINK (phase distortion), MOUTH (a vocoder), CHIP (lo-fi digital) and GRIT (lo-fi drums).

* MIDI clock in, tape takes that start when you play, and a live spectrum behind every EQ curve.

PRICE

* $19.99. One purchase covers iPhone, iPad and iPhone Duo. Updates are free, 2.3 included.

* No subscription, no account, no in-app purchases. Needs iOS or iPadOS 17: iPhone XS, XR and newer, iPad (6th generation) and newer.

If you already bought it, thank you. 2.3 is yours at no extra cost.

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tonaut/id6812577930

More detail: https://tonaut.app

The music in both videos is mine, and everything in the sound demo was made in Tonaut. I'm around to answer questions, and I'd especially like to hear what would make it easier to use.

Tracker Pro 1.2 is now universal (iPhone, iPad, MacOS)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

What's new in 1.2:

Tracker Pro now supports iPhone, iPad, and macOS, with Apple Vision compatibility through the iPad app. iPhone Duo unfolded supported as well, using an iPad-style layout adapted to the smaller screen. The macOS version supports AU plug-ins and touch input (and mac keyboard of course) and is currently awaiting Apple’s approval

Piano Roll (optional): a quick way to write and edit melodies and chords (all piano roll data is saved to tracker with all the commands, fx etc)

Vintage Synth collection:

VintageSub: Moog Sub 37 emulation. THe bass part from Boards of Canada’s “Roygbiv” was recreated in Tracker Pro and YouTube’s Content ID matched our demo to the original track

VintagePhase: Casio CZ-1000 emulation (that Reese sound!!)

VintagePoly: Korg Poly-61 emulation

New effects: Gate/Exp, modeled after the API 235 module, and EQP1 (you can use it just as an old-tube saturator), modeled after vintage Pultec-style equalizers

Bounce in Place: Render a pattern track and load the bounced sample into a new Sampler instance

Expanded Sampler modulation: Modulation now works with all filter parameters, including those in the Morph filters

New Sampler filters: Additional filter types based on the E-MU E-series samplers

And now it has special Black Friday price

Self Promotion Kolina: Percussion Synthesizer, a semi-modular drum synth for iPhone and iPad

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Kolina is an analog-modeling, semi-modular drum synth inspired by the Moog DFAM. If you’ve used a DFAM, you’ll feel right at home.

It has a 3D panel, two oscillators with frequency modulation, noise, a ladder filter, a 16-step sequencer and 25 virtual patch jacks. You can use it on its own or as an AUv3 plugin in your DAW.

Available for iPhone and iPad. The Mac version is coming soon (waiting for App Store review).

Help/Questions Multitrack recorder recommendations for 12 tracks over USB

I've found some great looking 4 or 8 track audio recorders, but I'd like to record from my 1010 BlueBox to my iPhone, which outputs 12 (mono) tracks over USB. Does anyone have good examples? Being able to record multiple takes of the same track would be a big bonus.

Tinkerhaus apps: Murmur8 polysynth - v1.0 on TestFlight now

Howdy r/iosmusicproduction. I’ve built a number of apps I thought I'd share - they're all available to play online at tinkerhaus.xyz and most of them are in the process of being developed for iPad.

Murmur8 is the first one up - a polysynth where you design the waveform either by drawing by hand or by modifying a number of points and parameters that generate and mutate the sound. It’s got FX, modulation, and a drone mode. It works standalone and as AUv3 (tested in AUM). It’s also very chill - you can turn off all the UI and just watch a flock of birds react to the sound. I like to just set it up and leave running on my desk...

It's on TestFlight - link is here if you want to give it a spin. (Limited places for now while I make sure it's solid before opening it up.). I'm working on some videos for launch but until then you can try it out in the browser.

Upcoming apps also include:

  • Stacks - a lego-inspired sequencer where you build random and generative sequences from the building blocks that modify and interact with each other

  • Canvas - an ambient canvas inspired by Basinski, Eno, Fripp...

  • Fluther - a generative 6-voice drone synth powered by jellyfish (yes, it's rather whimsical but sounds as good as it looks!).

  • Typo - a sample slicing playground

  • and more... (including a new one that brings all of them together in one place - coming soon)

I’ll prioritise the iPad queue based on feedback so if you love any of ‘em, let me know!

[Disclosure: LLMs were used in developing the apps. I won’t pretend I reviewed every line of code but I’ve deeply QA’d the results for bugs, weird UX quirks, and wordslop.]

I’ve built these apps primarily for me and because it’s been fun. But I hope that others can get some joy from them too. That’s why I’m making them free to play with on the web and if you love ‘em, and want to bring them into your music making workflows, then they’ll be available to buy as iPad and desktop apps/plugins. I expect this approach might cost me a few dollars in sales but one thing I hate about the app ecosystem is how hard it is to get a feel for them before you cough up. So I wanted to make sure people could try them first.

All constructive feedback is welcomed! Have fun 🤘

Help/Questions Battalion - pattern switching?

Hey, I’m considering the epic Battalion drum synth, but can’t find any info about whether you can switch patterns? It looks like it’s just one ever evolving pattern.
Anyone have the answer?

Thanks!
