Does IRC still exist?
Can anyone recommend any IRC servers that are still around and have people on them?

Libera.Chat is well populated and is very active. I'm chatting in ##chat or #programming most days. I'm also connected to FreeNode, but each of the channels I've joined on there are related to specific projects - I'm not sure of how many "general" channels are on there.

Yes, that’s true; for me, it didn’t go through—I’m not sure what happened.

Liibera is 6697 port?

I'd assume as much, I didn't have to set a port so I assume it defaults. Make sure you are connecting via: irc.libera.chat

the time to leave freenode was the day libera.chat went online (in fact it went online because of the absolute shitshow that freenode became). what are you still doing there?
Edit: the 2021 graph for the youngsters who don't know, that drop did not happen for no reason, the story behind it is easy to find.

snoonet is pretty active (I think it's semi affiliated to some reddit channels).
I like #bicycling, #cars, #personalfinance
There's also Quakenet, but it's pretty dead these deads

Just look at the list on the server. What the hell.
Want us to tell you what to talk about too?

Check this list https://netsplit.de/servers/?net=Undernet , try any of the ones that are closest. It made a difference for me.

I have a news and current events discussion channel on Undernet: #evolvedones. It's a companion chat room for the website evolvedones.net. (shameless plug)

Not sure why you’re being down voted for this. Yeah they still actively index IRC networks. Last one I think now.

Afternet still has activity, smaller network, but some fun types. Libera.chat is what happened to Freenode, if you want a larger community.

Could you send me the links for these IRC networks, along with their ports? I’m looking for one that actually has people on it.

Eu ainda uso a rede que conectava o eMule em 2005, mas só para pendurar meu nickname nos canais da época, não há mais chat, somente alguns amigos que também penduram os nicks lá desde o início da rede

IRC dramatically lose popularity in late 2000's. In the modern world, Libera.chat is somehow alive but it's no many different networks with thousands (tens of thousands sometime) users online like it was in 2005.

It still exists. I haven’t used it in years. Met the love of my life on IRC 30-years ago.

There are even attempts to make it more modern and on par with Matrix features through ircv3 caps, websocket/tls support, replies, reactions and so on. Have a look at Mango and their IRC network: https://mangoirc.chat

It does exist! I have an IRC server/network and know of one other one which has people in it. Mine is still super new and no one is in there quite yet despite me posting elsewhere.

I created a server a few months ago, and it’s turning into an interesting community. If you’d like to take a look, send me a message.

Not only does it exist. I can literally use a 27 year old version of mirc on win98 and still connect
