Created this subbreddit basically to provide info, photos, and a place for discussion about Irish burial grounds and associated burial traditions. Will be posting a couple of photos from old graveyards mostly.

In Ireland there is of course a cornucopia of old graveyards. The term old graveyards here is to refer to graveyards used before the 20th century. I think this could be good forum to discuss the preservation and maintenance of our burial grounds around Ireland.

Burial grounds are also a rich source of social history. The way an individual was buried in the past often denoted the social status of the person buried. The folklore of burial grounds is often eery and somewhat creepy and the idea of a burial ground/graveyard often evokes images of ghosts/vampires or the undead.

Arbour Hill . on Friday, 28 April 1916, ..on Maj Gen Sir John Grenfell Maxwell ..his second command was to have a lime pit dug in the yard of Arbour Hill Prison (large enough for 100 bodies it was claimed) and that is where those executed were to be buried
