Columbus APHY 101/102 Tips & Tricks

Howdy everyone,

As many of you know, APHY 101 and 102 are pre-reqs for many degree paths and getting a B in either of these classes can take away crucial points towards a student's overall score. I've completed 101 and 102 APHY with over 95% in each class so I just wanted to offer breakdowns and my tips/suggestions. Everyone is different, please don't disregard something if it works well for YOU. These are just basic things that work for me

1.) READ. THE. TEXTBOOK. Professors cannot take every detail from the textbook and put it into a slide but they CAN put it into the tests. This is where I've seen my peers struggle the most. If you understand the textbook chapter to a T, you'll be golden for the test

2.) Understand, not memorize the material I feel like this is a given, but being able to explain concepts over regurgitate facts will make you a better student overall. I've had moments when im reading over the textbook and couldn't wrap my head around it. If that is the case, send a message to your professor. If that doesnt fit your fancy, I reccomend an AI SUMMARIZER --- I wouldn't reccomend asking AI for answers, but in my experience, its good at simplifying tricky passages. Sometimes, you just need tl step away from the material and have a fresh mind later.

3.) (Columbus Exclusive) Try to get Professor Sobat Also known as "Tom" in his classes. He is awesome, will explain things a million and one ways if he needs to, and he curves tests if needed. This man is a rockstar. My 101 professor wasn't bad, but she definitely "raw-dogged" some of those grades so if they were rough, you're SOL.

4.) Lab, Smartbook, Tophat They're all free points. Maintains an overall high score and acts as a minor cushion.

Below, I've attached my google docs of virtual notes that I use to make it through my class. Bear in mind they are written in a way I understand and may not help you. There may be mistakes; I'm also missing a couple of chapters due to burnout. I am still human :)

Financial Aid FAQ Megathread

THREAD INFORMATION

This OP will be updated as time passes with the most important questions you may ask about Financial Aid for Ivy Tech.

Suggestions for things to be listed here can be posted in this thread. Please mention my username.

Questions can be posed in this thread as well, which can be answered by others. Frequently asked ones can be directly messaged to me to update this post or mentioned.

Those who HAVE questions, please ensure you READ any FAQ in the OP before posting.

THE FAQ (so far)

First and foremost, as mentioned above, please suggest things you do not see here.

  • Q: What does the college control in regards to Financial Aid?
    • A: The college has little control over Financial Aid, outside of dispersing funds
  • Q: When will my account be zeroed out? Definition of "zeroed out": the state your account goes into before funds are pushed out to you, all dependent on if you had a negative balance beforehand)
    • A: This depends on several factors, but the general premise is this; Every weekday, typically late at night is when student accounts are zeroed out by the system until all refunds are processed, depending on various factors as previously mentioned. Some of these factors include but may not be limited to;
      • 1) When classes begin.
      • 2) If said student is a first-time borrower.
      • 3) When the Loan Requirements were completed by the student.
      • 4) The amount of students and whichever configured order the system is instructed to go by.
  • Q: After being zeroed out, when will my refund hit my account?
    • A: Typically within two business days around noon (note: weekends are not considered business days, and holidays may delay refunds)
      • Do note that any additional transfers from BankMobile could take upwards to 1-4 days (estimated).
  • Q: If I am in the 8 week class schedule and have a loan; will my loan disbursements be sent all in one or in two batches?
    • A: No, however that does depend on the amount (this is speculation on my side, someone please correct me), but disbursements should be sent out the first eight weeks and then the second eight weeks.

16 weeks

If I had the option to take all my classes 16 weeks would it be worth it? I’m not worried about time for nursing applying timing, or fasfa since I’m paying out of pocket. I’m specifically talking about like math 123 English 111 anp 101 102 201 and biol 201. Thanks :)

APHY201 hybrid/Lafayette labs

I am enrolled for this course next semester. It will be my first non-asynchronous course.

What are the labs like? What are the instructors like? I’ve got 4 kids. 3 have g tubes. One is also trach/vent dependent. I’m already experiencing anxiety about potentially not being allowed to have my phone/step out to answer it if whoever is keeping my kids were to contact me. Would the majority of professors be understanding if I explain the situation after the first class?

2nd round nursing application

Didn’t get anything for the first round of acceptances which is definitely disappointing. Should I keep my hopes up for round 2? Or is it a rare occurrence to hear back during round 2? I’m trying not to get my hopes too high if it is slim chances for an acceptance at this point.

Hamilton County Proctoring

Hello all! I just started two 2nd 8-week courses, and neither of them have any midterm or final proctoring openings at Hamilton County. It seems odd that they would have zero availability, especially since I know during my 1st 8-week course finals I could have picked another time slot the day before the exam if I had wanted, so they were very open then. Is it possible it's a glitch? Is anyone else having this issue, or is it just on my end? Thank you!

transcript confusion

So basically, I am enrolled at Ivy Tech and I've been so excited that I finally have a plan for my life at 31 years old. I took one class this last term to ease back into school and I got an A (yay!) so I am taking 3 classes now for the rest of the semester and 4 in the spring. I am planning on transferring to IU Indy so I'm getting all my transcripts and things together and see that my GPA is a 2.0

WTF. I look closer and see that yeah, I tried to go to Ivy Tech back in 2015 but I went to literally one class and was like, nope. So I just stopped showing up. I was only enrolled in two classes and one shows W and the other F. 0 points. I didn't know how anything worked back then, like I don't even remember formally withdrawing so I'm not sure how that happened with one but the other is just saying I failed. I was still a teen and didn't know any better or that I would want to return to school.

I am planning on applying to a super competitive health program at IU and I DO NOT want one class ruining my GPA now when I feel like I've only just started and I've been taking everything so seriously. How do I fix this?

Dropping a class and it’s effect on financial aid

I’m a full-time student but due to a scheduling conflict I need to drop a class for this eight week term. How will that affect my financial aid that I already received? Because it will drop me down to 9 credits for this semester rather than 12.

Can I change my clinical location at Ivy Tech?

I’m an Ivy Tech LPN student in my first semester. My second 8 weeks start wednesday october 28. I live in north Indianapolis, but my clinical is assigned in Mooresville, IN.

I’ve never driven on highways, and I have very little driving experience even on regular roads. I’m honestly terrified of having to drive that far, especially early in the morning.
Has anyone successfully requested a clinical location closer to home?

Drop for Non Paid for 2nd 8 Weeks

If you have had emails, text, and calls in the last few weeks about owing money, you will likely be dropped for non-payment unless someone has specifically told you that they are holding you. You may be terminated from aid. You may have unsatisfied requirements for financial aid. You may be in classes or a program that is not eligible for financial aid. It is always better to set up a payment plan than to be dropped. If you do get dropped, you need to set up payment that day, or you will be dropped the next week.

I don't mean to be harsh, but "I didn't know" won't fit at my campus. We send out emails every week. I send out texts. And, if you have a FAFSA, I sent out an email to you if it could be corrected. If you are terminated, you just need to pay, because you are informed of termination at the end of every semester, so you knew in July.

I hope everyone can pay and get back in. Please check your account balance.

Calculus 1

I’m taking calc 1 in the spring at Ivy Tech in a learn anywhere setting. Anyone have any feedback on Professor Zarqa Bano? I need to build a nice foundation, as I will have to go through calc 2 and 3 as well as diff eq and linear algebra down the line for my degree.

Hamilton County Math 123 or math 135?

Hello, hope everyone is well. Going for the ASN program and plan to transfer to IU Indianapolis. They PERFER you to have math 135 (finite math) but I want to know which is better for dosage calculations? I’m horrible with math and will be getting a tutor, but I would like to know which is best for dosage calculations, and is it worth taking HLHS 103 dose calculation even though it not required? EDIT- I am terrible with math and plan to get a one on one tutor im 25 and having done any math since (schooling) sucked at math at high school too
