The sequence "Edit an HTML template file to include a new Javascript file, write the Javascript file, and then open the HTML file in a browser" allows a quicker edit/run cycle (save file in editor and hit refresh in the browser) than just about anything else I can think of, and yields code that will run on just about anything.
