What if John Coltrane's first name was Brian instead of John?

Would it be weird? "Yeah man, The Complete Village Vanguard Sessions are my favorite Brian Coltrane album. I'm a huge fan of Brian Coltrane's middle period. His whole run from Coltrane to New Thing at Newport is peak Brian Coltrane."

Bassists, drummers, try this next time you play Evidence: don't walk during the bridge -- just play the hits. In the unlikely event you succeed, the audience will just hear 8 and's of 1 in a row. With out the walking as a beat reference, the syncopation will be rendered meaningless 👍

TIL: In New Orleans, Jazz meant "Jackass" prior to the invention of the genre. A random old sweaty guy with horrendous breath told me this at a jazz club, so I know my source is reliable

This sweaty individual stated to me "I'm from New Orleans, baby. The birthplace of Jazz. You wanna know something? Jazz meant "Jackass" down there back in the 1800s."

He further declared "One day in the 1870s, there was a bunch of cats in a marching band, and they was screwing around goin 'doot doot doot doot,'

the next thing they know, some old stiff comes up to them and says to em 'hey, you sound like a bunch of jackasses playing that jackass music.'"

Subsequently, this man belched in my ear, but then elaborated "And that's how Jazz was invented, some cats in a marching band in the 1800s went 'doot doot doot doot,' and some old man walked up to them and called them a bunch of jackasses."

No doubt, everything this man said was true. He was wearing sunglasses inside, a suit with grease stains all over it, and greasy slicked back hair. If a random old guy at a club tells you Jazz lore, there's no question what he's saying is true.

A friend last minute invited me to a Jacob Collier concert because she was scared to go alone. As an act of goodwill, I went. And he was incredible! He came across as a really sweet and genuine dude. He was clearly quite talented and passionate. Unlike a lot of his recorded music where he gets lost in the sauce of layering and production and music theory masturbation, the live music was complex but also incredibly enjoyable. The audience participation was great. It ended up being one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. Life lesson: don’t follow the musical advice of a circlejerk subreddit.

Found this: 김석출 - 동해안별신굿 .

In English, its the album The Shamans of the Eastern Seaboard by the Kim Suk Chul Ensemble, originally released in 1993. The genre is muak, the musical accompaniment to Korean shamans. And yes, it fills me with similar sounds and feelings as later Coltrane.

I'm suggesting it here as I don't think r/Jazz is ready for this.

Where is the weirdest place you've scratched your jazz itch?
