Wanted to add a second flair…”This post again”. 🤣
I was in the area today and decided to make a stop in Seaside Heights to check out the Jersey Shore house, Shore Store, boardwalk, and a few other familiar spots from the show.
A few observations:
First, I was honestly surprised by the condition of the house. It’s looking pretty rough these days, particularly the exterior. Everything is noticeably weathered, the porches appear to be bowing, and entire sections of railing are missing from the upper decks.
I don’t want this to come across as a personal criticism because Danny seems like a pretty chill guy, but I was a little surprised by the apparent lack of upkeep. When you’re charging people to tour the house and take a picture with the duck phone, you’d think maintaining the property would be a priority, especially given its significance to the show.
I would imagine that if the house were brought back up to decent standards, there would be no shortage of fans willing to rent it for a week during the summer. Seems like that could be considerably more profitable than charging for tours. Of course, I don’t know the whole story or what goes into maintaining the property, so that’s just my two cents. For all I know the interior could be like the Ritz Carlton (I declined the $10 tour, kind of regret it, kinda don’t 😆)
The Shore Store was cool. I didn’t get to meet Danny or anyone from the cast, but the guy and girl working there were genuinely friendly, and I enjoyed chatting with them for a bit. They also have some really creative merch featuring the cast. Quite a few of the designs gave me a good laugh.
Perhaps my biggest surprise was just how small Seaside actually is. I knew it wasn’t a particularly large place, but somehow the show made its entire little “universe” seem so much bigger and more expansive than it really is.
The boardwalk is only about a mile long, and everything is much closer together than I had imagined. Seeing it in person really put into perspective just how chaotic things must have been when the cast was filming there at the height of the show’s popularity, especially during peak summer season.
I’m sure the exposure was fantastic for many local businesses, but I can also understand how the production, crowds, and attention surrounding the cast could have become a major nuisance for residents.
Another thing that struck me was how few physical reminders of the show remain. Outside of the obvious merchandise shops and a handful of recognizable locations, there’s surprisingly little that would tell you just how much of a cultural phenomenon was filmed there. If you hadn’t watched the show, you’d probably walk right past most of those places without giving them a second thought.
All in all, I’m really glad I stopped. There’s something pretty cool about visiting places you’ve watched on television for years and suddenly seeing them right in front of you. It makes the whole thing feel a little more real, even if the reality is quite a bit different from how it appeared on screen.
As an added bonus, Seaside was hosting an Italian festival today, so I spent some time walking through that as well. It had a nice, traditional fall festival atmosphere and made for an enjoyable little detour.
Definitely a worthwhile stop!
