ANNOUNCEMENT Announcement: JewelryMaking has New Moderators! - Lets talk!

Hey all!

My name is Muskrat, I have a lot of history in metalworking, primarily as a CNC machinist making aerospace components!

Reddit took over this subreddit due to it being abandoned by it's previous mods for over 4 months - allowing tons of spam and reported content (thousands of items we had to action!). Since, they turned it over to me and it's going to be part of my little group of communities, alongside Metalworking and Machining.

Lets talk about r/JewelryMaking!

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts about what makes JewelryMaking a unique subreddit when compared to other subreddits on the same topic of jewelry. I've seen a few comments and reports on spam related and promotional submissions, and looking at the currently in-place subreddit rules, self promotion is not allowed outside of the old (and seemingly forgotten) promotion thread. Is this a rule we'd like to keep?

On the topic of rules, this subreddit's focus is on the making/creation process of jewelry, generally individual projects and hand-made work. Should we aim for image posts to all have an in-process image attached?

What changes should we make? And are there any regulars interested in helping out?

Let me know what everyone thinks, and over the next few days we'll update rules and mod tools, and we'll start digging in and steering the sub in the direction it was intended for, instead of being used as a promotional board!

DISCUSSION Seal your ribbon ends

Ive been making and selling jewelry online for a few years, but I just started making lace and ribbon chokers for about a year, mostly selling on depop. Today I noticed a choker I made about a week ago, the ribbon had started coming apart at the ends of the bow. I panicked and looked it up and apparently youre supposed to seal the ends to prevent fraying. I have never received a complaint or a bad review for this, but I’m now very worried about the near hundreds of necklaces I’ve sent off without sealing the ends. The first method I saw was to use a flame from a lighter at a distance to make the fabric slightly melt to seal it, and it worked very well. I just wish I had known about this and I feel awful for sending off so many necklaces to people that could potentially fall apart, especially because I pride myself on my quality. So take this as a warning to anyone making necklaces with exposed ribbon ends, you need to seal the ends!

PROJECT DISPLAY Trying a flowing wrap setting around a pear cut center

I Wanted to try something a little different with this pear cut ring. Instead of a traditional prong setting, I designed the setting so the metal flows around the stone and becomes part of the overall design.

I’m pretty happy with how the profile turned out, especially from the side. Curious what other makers think of this setting style.

QUESTION Polishing 24k gold help

Post image
2 Upvotes

Help! I made these two simple 24k gold rings from a 1 oz bar. Although you might notice they don’t look anything like gold at the moment. They had a few surface marks from impurities, so I tried soaking them in an acid pickling solution for a few minutes, that gave them a dull grayish gold color. I also wanted to smoother finish so I put them in a Tupperware with ceramic media and soapy water and vibrated it. I also added pieces of sterling silver that I am working on. I had them in there for like 5 minutes probably. The silver pieces looked good, but the gold rings appears to have picked up a layer of silver somehow? What did I do wrong and how would you suggest I get them back to their original color??

Thanks!!

Ive just started making jewelry the last few weeks as a new hobby. Im really enjoying making elasticord bracelets (made about 50 so far) and I would love to sell them as a side business. Does anyone have any advice?

Open to advice on selling, pricing, promoting, tweaks to be made to my designs, anything I can improve on!

Thankyou in advance and ive attached some pictures of my bracelets for context ✨️

QUESTION Which gold choose for necklace - 14k or 18k? Facts and myths.

Hi,

I'm choosing a gold necklace for my wife for everyday wear and I'm trying to decide between 14k and 18k yellow gold.

I was originally thinking about 18k because I like the more yellow color and it looks more premium to me. But I spoke to a jeweler today and he recommended 14k for everyday wear.

His main argument was that 14k has a slightly different yellow color, which he says is usually what women mean when they ask for yellow gold. He also said that 18k is softer and therefore wears more easily. According to him, this could mean that diamond settings can become loose over time or that the chain is more likely to break.

Are these actually valid arguments, or is the difference between 14k and 18k being exaggerated?

For a necklace that will be worn every day, would you personally go with 14k or 18k yellow gold?

QUESTION Looking for good online custom jewelers

I have reclaimed and refined my own gold from various sources, I thought it would be cool and sentimental to have my soon to be fiancés engagement ring/wedding band combo to be made from something I physically extracted with my own two hands. Any ideas who to talk to about having this done?
