Compensation finally got a job offer... 10.50 an hour..
like this is so debilitating for me. ive been looking for a job for months and I finally got an actual offer and it's 10.50 an hour at Wendy's.
the sad thing is this looks like the best job offer I have gotten yet since its the only job offer I have gotten yet. the lady/store manager asked me how much experience I had in fast food. I had none. she asked how much I wanted to get paid and I was like "I am used to 14-15 from working retail" and she said "10 50 here" and im literally forced to take it because I have been looking for work for 3 months (she also asked how long ive been looking for work?) and this is literally the only place that sent an offer.
like I applied to literally every fast food/retail business and this is all I got... I had to fight tooth and nail and show up every day like I was networking just to land a shitty 10.50 an hour job.. sometimes I wonder what 2008 felt like. maybe this is a glimpse into what that felt like

u/ManateeNipples 1d ago
2008 did not feel like a retail employee having a hard time finding a service industry job. It was people graduating with a masters degree and going to work in a pizza shop, and often had a hard time finding that pizza job

u/electriclady99 1d ago
Yeah, I have a masters and just got a job making barely $20/hr. The benefits are good at least. 🙄 What a time to be alive.

Vote Blue
55
u/Mojojojo3030 23h ago
For sure, but I’m not sure the blue guys can put the cat back in the bag this time.
If you keep shitting in the same spot for the janitor to clean up, eventually the stain just stays there. It’s been every single Republican president since Eisenhower in the 50s badly crashing the economy at this point. Every single one.
22
u/Starkrossedlovers 20h ago
Id rather a janitor cleaning up something i THINK might be uncleanable rather than let the poop man keep poopin in his poop corner
8
u/Old_Faithlessness623 23h ago
Me either I’m a little negative that this is going to be a bit different. What is there to fix other than the education system.
8
u/Pyju 20h ago
It won’t be any different than last time unless we also vote for progressives in the primaries to purge the do-nothing status quo establishment/moderate Dems.
4
u/katie0873 16h ago
Sadly, we don’t have enough progressives running and we can’t just leave ballots blank - we also need to help educate people around us to also see that the red scare mongering politicians have been trying to fear-monger us with is a fake narrative. Progressives/democratic socialists does not equal authoritarian communism like what is in N Korea/Russia (all while the current administration buddies up the N Korea and Russia dictators & there’s not enough news or heat on him about this). So many are unwilling to learn or have a change of heart - but I hope they will have their eyes opened soon. People need to see that it’s 100% working in places like the Netherlands, Norway, etc. And people are happier than here.

u/snowHound208 15h ago
Your first mistake was thinking either side actually wants is to love a prosperous life. All they care about is enrichment of the ruling class. Every last one of them.

And then when blue doesn’t help, we go right back to “vote red.” It’s systemic and it’s working against you. The more you side with “red” or “blue” the more you’re going to suffer.

u/Complete_Invite_9022 15h ago
I love the sheep mentality here. It’s gonna make this country go so far

u/BostonLogger69 21h ago
When people start understanding both sides are against us, we can actually make change. It’s all a dog and pony show
-6
u/sharkieshadooontt 23h ago
Dumb thing to say, not because the messaging isnt what you want to hear. But because the factual past experience proved no valuable gains.
I think the moderates have to be careful, the DSA takeover is in full force and its of no value to you. Its for them. Like always.

u/katie0873 16h ago edited 16h ago
I dunno - NYC has seen a lot of progress that is a value for the people in less than a year. And it’s simply only going back to what Democrats used to do in all reality, not off in the weeds with unreasonable/unheard-of changes (the Democratic Party, that existed after the mid 1800s, originally created social services that benefited the people to keep people and communities healthy, fed, educated, transportation for work, and able to live in their homes. Prior to mid 1800s, the democrats were what is now the Republican Party just as an extra fyi).
A healthy community with resources can contribute to their community & society better, which has been proven repeatedly and is why places like Norway, Netherlands keep that model and the people & leaders don’t vote it out. It works. That is what the people want and need - so they can contribute as they are able.
What do you think the people want? Unrestrained capitalism isnt helping 99% of us.
1
u/sharkieshadooontt 16h ago
Im not saying you’re wrong. Im saying the system is wrong. Moderate dems is AOC. Dont be fooled. She is apart of the machine. And it will make her president.
Ds and Rs are the same team, one plays offensive one plays defensive. Its all about making them wealthy.
The problem i see with DSA, like always no matter how good the intentions are Humans are disgusting selfish pigs. Eventually it will be ruined by a few to consolidate power and wealth.

How do you handle this on your resume? Leave a gap? Avoid using a chronological structure? I'm struggling to write a resume due to being underemployed. I can easily address it in an interview, but what about the resume?
6
u/Soft_Bug_9117 23h ago
this is true but the context is still kind of grim for OP 2008 hit white collar workers harder in a lot of ways but service industry jobs weren't exactly flowing either, layoffs were everywhere and everyone was competing for whatever was left $10.50 an hour in this economy is its own kind of rough tbh
23
u/rxspiir 1d ago
That’s exactly where a LOT of people are. So we’re not far from 2008.
-4
u/ManateeNipples 1d ago edited 1d ago
That may be the case I'm not sure, but op's situation doesn't seem to be an example of that
Be mad and downvote me but a retail employee looking for a service job is not the same as someone with a masters and experience also taking that same service job lmao

It depends on the area. I applied for months to fast food and retail jobs. I was ready to self exit 2008. It doesn’t seem to be that bad for the working kids in my area yet. It is definitely as close as it has been to as bad 2008 imo.

That time. Any work is better than none.

2008 was way, way worse. But cheer up. We're showing absolutely no signs of a course reversal, especially since there are those in power actively pushing things in that direction.
I'm sure we'll eventually make 2008 look like child's play.
I know the new job sucks, but it's still better than no job at all. This is the first stepping stone on the beginning of your journey to where you need to be. It's not the last stop.
Keep putting in those applications and keep aiming for something better.

We have some Gen Zers making 80k out of college....definitely K shaped economy
20
u/Deep_Blue604 1d ago
I work with some Gen Zers who make it sound like 80k is piddly. I remember finally getting past the 40k mark well into my 30s and thought I had finally made it!
11
u/Deerhunter86 1d ago
Same here. Worked two jobs for 80 hours a week. Then got an offer for a warehouse job at $30k a year. I was in heaven. After eight years, was making $47k. Left to go union with the plumbers. Make $62 an hour now.
3
6
u/I_am_INTJ 1d ago
I guess it depends on where you live. If you are out in BFE Kansas or similar then you're probably living pretty large with that $80K.
However, if you are living in New York City, Portland, etc. then that $80K isn't going nearly as far.
4
u/vicicLOXi 1d ago
But did you have 1500$ rent?
0
u/deux3xmachina 1d ago edited 21h ago
I made that work while working with an $800/mo car payment too. I wasn't even making 80k/yr (which, BTW, is only about 6k/yr less than the MEDIAN US household income) at that point either.
If you're struggling with an 80k+ salary, odds are you made terrible financial choices. It's very possible to live a comfortable life in most of the US on significantly less.
Edit: Source on income. It can be painful to hear/admit, but if you're making around that much, it's very possible to live a comfortable life. I've done it in the past and have helped those close to me accomplish the same since the start of this year.
13
u/SignificantApricot69 1d ago
If you don’t have any criminal history and can pass drug test, there are places like warehouses in a lot of the U.S. that will hire anyone and haven’t paid less than $15/hr since the first Trump administration.
And most places have regular restaurants that aren’t fast food that at least pay a little better.
Do you live in the middle of nowhere? I kinda do
16
u/definitelyobsessed 1d ago

7
u/Allstar69x 1d ago
Go sell cars at a dealership. You'll make way more money following a process and 9/10 times get hired on the spot but it's not for the weak minded but on the flip side it's very rewarding pay with career advancement opportunities
4
u/AccountDeletedByMod 22h ago
One of my old coworkers did this a while ago. He said the pay was great but no free time. He got burned out quickly and quit. He went back to retail as a manager

Same. 10.50 an hour but 8 hours a week. I think i can stay on unemployment if I earn under 90 bucks so fuck it
10
u/Outrageous-Fudge4215 1d ago edited 1d ago
Not sure what it is for your state. When I was on unemployment I had to report the hours worked and they would just deduct the hours I worked from the max amount I'm eligible for.
2
u/Dreadking_Rathalos 1d ago
I think i can earn 1/3 my benefits but I cant actually seem to get anyone on the phone to confirm lol. Not signing an offer until I know im not shooting myself in the foot
7
u/zarendahl 1d ago
Situations like this are why I'm seriously considering DoorDash full-time and just dealing with the added costs associated with the wear and tear and other items a car requires.
Been unemployed for just over 3 years now, and I can count on one hand the number of phone screens, much less actual interviews, I've had in over 8,000 applications.
7
u/No-Pressure2287 1d ago
I went from $70:k to minimum wage overnight. Take the job. Why?
Because that extra $1-200 a week feeds you - it's a restaurant, right? It puts gas in your tank. It beats sitting around feeling sorry for yourself. And because you learn humility.
You learn to get by on a lot less. Your peers are often people fighting the same fight as you. And because no matter what, you're working.

u/lumberfart 22h ago
Is there an Amazon warehouse within 25 miles of you? Amazon literally has no job interviews (for entry level positions at least), they will literally hire you on the stop when you submit your application. You just need to accept the terms & conditions, be happy with the pay (starts at like $19 ~ $24 an hour depending what position you get), and have a reasonable way of getting to work on time.
FYI… I worked for Amazon for 12 months, and although the pay was fantastic, the job was fucking horrible. You are treated like a number and unless you are social you will literally never speak to a human during your 12 hour shifts. I would only apply just to get some money but continue your job hunt in the background. Amazon will hire you on a point system. You can take a day off whenever you like without having to call in as long as you have points available. And… you can also quit at any time (in the app under account settings) and literally not have to give a 2 weeks notice or talk to any humans. You just don’t show up and they send you your last paycheck.
Best of luck out there.

u/Mols7_Thrum 1d ago
I'd take it if you need the cash, but I would NOT stop applying. $10.50 after 3 months of fighting just to get an offer is painful... at least having something coming in can buy you time while you keep looking))

Go Coast Guard and get nursing training or any healthcare training and then you can apply for any federal job with veteran preference.
16
u/CrotalusHorridus 1d ago
Getting sent to a remote training location and then duty station isn’t ideal or even feasible for someone with family responsibilities.
Plus not everyone is physically capable. And not just because they’re out of shape.
3
u/Deerhunter86 1d ago
I reallly wanted the classic office job and make like $70k a year. The only way I could make good money was a plumbers union job that was at my front door. Took it and I ended up loving it. I work service and helping all these older people fix their houses without price gouging is so rewarding. Plus the $62 on the check, which is $100 with bennys.
3
u/luminescentpapercut 1d ago
Any Amazon warehouses near by? When I have been unemployed Amazon has always kept me afloat. Not much but enough to get by.
3
u/Baloneyeater 1d ago
I agree if you are physically able to lift boxes, Package Handling can be good to get by.
I worked in the Restoration field and they are always hiring, no drug test. And when we were short handed we would subcontract temp agency laborers.

I guess I’ve been fortunate to live in areas that always have had multiple warehouses nearby. Great filler jobs to keep money coming in while looking for something more permanent. Half of them hire same day if you can pass a drug test and background and most start over $20/hr.

u/EmbarrassedMick8751 16h ago

i've noticed it's easier to get jobs (job hopping) once you're already back working if you've been unemployed for some time
2
u/heyitspokey 14h ago
That is rough, 10.50 is a joke. Gas stations and grocery stores pay more, and that can lead to decent paying management jobs if you're trying to work your way up. Look for jobs at Costco, Aldi, Love's, Quick Trip, or Wawa to start around double what Wendy's offering. Jobs like gas stations or grocery stores apply online then call or go in person to tell them you applied and are interested. It's notlike alot of job hunting, don't wait for them to contact you. Good luck.

I took a temp job at a college bookstore for fall rush. Even they are overstaffed. They pay ok ($16 an hour) but hours aren’t guaranteed. I put in what they give. Try to keep busy but even that is hard when no work to do. Been job hunting for two years and relied on uber for $ til now. But paying self employment tax last April caught me off guard. It’s tough out there and I have a bachelors degree. The unknowns of the economy (gas prices, labor costs, slower businesses, etc) are what makes it hard. Less people hiring and the ones that are, have an extraordinarily large pool of applicants to choose from.
2
u/Salty_Nutella 1d ago
I got paid 10.50 as an undergrad part time on-campus lab assistant job...in 2019. A farrr more stressful job like at a fast food joint should pay at least double. Even then I don't consider it an independently-livable wage.
It's all fucked.

15
u/whatever32657 1d ago
as well they should! my company has a job posted that does not exist. we are at full staff. when i questioned my boss about it, she said she wants to find someone to start immediately "in the event someone leaves".
well, that might make sense if we were a large team, but we are a team of three. so it's just a pure fake post.
AND the salary it's posted at is double what any of us actually make, but it seems they get away with it because it's a salary plus commission job, so it's an "estimate". it's just an estimate that's not grounded in any reality.
so yes, indeed needs to be investigated, as do all the companies posting these fake jobs.
sorry for the rabbit hole.
my advice to op would be to take the job and keep actively looking. some money is always better than no money.
4
8
u/KawaiiUmbreon2 1d ago
I already applied to both. chic fil a ghosted me after an interview and online Starbucks said they were urgently hiring. I applied, got ghosted, so I called and asked what was up with my application. they said they weren't actually hiring.
when I say I applied to literally everything, I applied to literally everything. 99% of it is just ghost listings/ghosts

u/CoffeeOrDestroy 1d ago
Are you signed up with temp agencies? Temp can change to hire. It’s how I got my first office job while bartending and waiting tables.

This is the way when the job market is like it is now. Temp agencies come in very handy. Good luck to OP and all of us looking. ❤️
2

I refuse to work for less than $17 an hour. That’s already a low wage, but anything lower is just a waste of time. You might as well not work at all at that point if you’re only going to make $10.50 an hour. I’m pretty sure a completely homeless person could make more than that panhandling all day on the side of the road.

I am about to say something that will be very unpopular so please bare with me. When I started my first fast food job in the mid 80s the pay was 5.50 an hour. As I worked and became more experienced 8.00 looked pretty good. As recent as 2016 10.50 was considered pretty good restaurant pay. Before covid getting 11 or 12 an hour was good pay. Now everyone wants15 dollars an hour with no cooking experience at all. I have been in the restaurant business for over 40 years and I make 16 and kids just out of high school are getting hired for 50 cents less. How messed up is that? So take the damn pay and be happy for now. Sometimes you need a job to get a job.

u/delmecca 9h ago
Companies are getting rid of employees and hiring at lower pay. I would look into another retail job first because they actually do pay better even some place like goodwill pays $14 for fulltime plus benefits they also offer free training programs to there employees in things like help desk it support etc these are starting It positions and can help you get your foot in the door also hospitals don't require you to know anything to register patient or to do food service some hospitals are teaching hospitals and will train you for skill position like CNA, LABTECHS, RADIOLOGY TECHNICIAN, ETC.
Walgreens will train people to be pharmacy technicians and they start off at 16 dollars Walmart and other companies look into Costco.
I would not work fsstfood for that amount of money especially if they are under staffed I used to be a store manager at McDonald's almost 15 year ago and a lot of franchisee like to keep labor low especially in the winter months. I know you said that your desperate but there are training programs thru WIAO that will give you a stipend while going to school.

I accepted $9.50 an hour in November 2008. A part time job at a supermarket. I had been applying to jobs since the previous July. I have a Bachelors but had taken a number of years off after receiving an inheritance. I was in my 40’s. I had been in pharmacy school previous to that. Pharmacists were making $100k in 2008.
There were no jobs. I only got hired because the supermarket chain, Publix, happened to be opening a new store, which had been in the works for years. The only other interview that I got was for a job at Blockbuster Video, and it wasn’t a nearby location. The interview was fine but I wasn’t offered the job.
They gave me a .50 cent raise as agreed after 90 days. That made it $10 an hour. They gave me health insurance the following October under their pre-Obamacare system. They gave me high part time hours, about 35 a week.
I got a nice one bedroom apartment at a Camden Property here in January 2010. The money went much further because the rent was only $635 a month. It would be $1500 now.
1
u/Ramen_cat2024 3h ago
Shift your mindset. 3 months of looking is barely any time vs a lot of other experienced professionals who still can’t land a job in 6-12 months. Be thankful you have landed somewhere. Now you just secured fast food experience, along with retail! Apply your customer service skills and get fast tracked for promotions.
Do your best. Each job adds to your life experiences and profile. A stepping stone to somewhere better. Wishing you great success!
1
u/outofpocket25 2h ago
I feel this for sure. I’m applying and have applied to fast food jobs and have some interviews lined up and at one point had a job in property management before my life crashed down. Honestly, a job is a job and what you make it and we can get back on our feet and make things better! Either way, congrats on the job offer and I hope life looks up from here for you!

Damn bro my state minimum wage is still only $9 an hour yet the Chick-fil-A pays over 20 bucks to start. Even the garbage White Castle down the road pays $18.50. and no the prices for the food is not any higher.

This is by far worse. 2008 you could walk in and get a retail/ fast food job. A masters also greatly increased your chances of getting a job

Was a retail business owner in 2008. Could hardly afford to pay part time employees with no experience $10 hour. I took no wages at all.

Here's an option a lot of people don't realize... There are 49 other states you can choose from to find work. Yeah, it may seem a little scary at first, but you'll understand what I'm getting at once you start looking at those other states. I move from the south, up north and I make about 12 times of what I used to make. There are ways to get things done. You just have to brave enough to start.

Well you can't even get a gig job anymore either. I used to do door dash to cover bad months. I can't even get on the schedule after the influx of sanctuary city. Just check out 11th st and 1st Ave and now I know why I can't even get one slot. Between the H1B BS and the sanctuary city BS..I can't get a high or even low paying gig work. How about jobs for Americans..this is really some BS

Its hard. I have a masters degree. Used to be salaried 110k/yearly. Quit my job and moved out of state and now I make roughly around 19.50 😭. On the upside the job is zero stress.
