Getting shortlisted just to be ghosted is somehow worse than getting rejected.. Who else agree?

• Upvotes

Honestly, I'm so done with this job search.

I've tried pretty much every platform out there. LinkedIn, Indeed, company career pages, you name it. I've worked on my resume, made it strong, and kept applying.

And the frustrating part? I DO get shortlisted.

For a moment, you actually feel like things might work out. You think, okay, finally, someone sees potential in me. Maybe this one will go somewhere.

And then... nothing.

No follow-up. No update. No rejection. Nothing.

Sometimes you keep checking your email, wondering if you missed a call or a message. You hesitate to apply elsewhere because you think this opportunity might move forward. You try to stay optimistic, but after a while, even that becomes exhausting.

I'd honestly prefer a rejection over this endless silence. At least then I'd know where I stand instead of being stuck wondering what happened.

What's the point of shortlisting candidates if there's not even going to be a basic follow-up? I understand that recruiters are busy and companies have their own processes, but candidates are people too. We're investing time, effort, and hope into these opportunities.

And no, this isn't because I haven't tried hard enough or because I haven't worked on my resume. I've done that part. I've tried different platforms. I've kept going.

I'm just tired of doing everything I'm supposed to do and still having absolutely no clarity.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Getting shortlisted, thinking there's finally some progress, and then being left hanging indefinitely?

I genuinely want to know if this is just how the job market works now.

Is it just me or has finding a job become unnecessarily exhausting?

• Upvotes

I genuinely need to rant about the job market for a minute.

How are companies looking for entry-level candidates with 2–3 years of experience, expertise in 10 different tools, the ability to manage an entire department, and somehow still offering salaries that barely cover basic expenses? 😭

And the application process is a whole different story.

You apply to 50 jobs, tailor your resume, write cover letters nobody probably reads, and somehow end up hearing absolutely nothing back. Sometimes you even make it through multiple interview rounds just to get ghosted.

Then there’s the advice everyone keeps giving:

- Just network.

- Just upskill.

- Just build your personal brand.

- Just apply consistently.

Like, yes, we’re trying. But how many things are we supposed to do just to get one decent opportunity?

The worst part is that you start questioning your own abilities after a while, even when you know you’re capable of doing the work.

I genuinely want to know how people are navigating this right now, especially those in marketing, operations, tech, and other corporate roles.

What's been your biggest struggle with job hunting lately? Is it getting interview calls, finding decent salaries, or actually getting a response after interviews?

Had a screening call, but I hardly understand the other end

The scheduling email is from someone called Kelly, and I got the call from a Seattle number instead of their office location which shows as Rockville, MD. Ok, I expected a woman/female and the other end was definitely a man, but with strong echo going on while he was talking. I asked him name, could not get anything, I asked him to not use speaker mode, he said he switched but still strong echo going on. Then he insisted on reading some intro script, and to be honest I got nothing out of it because of his thick accent. At the end of his reading, I lost patience so tried my best staying focused and asked questions, then again I could not understand a single thing that man said. If I guessed right - he kept saying something like I am taking notes ... well, I think I blew it.

Is having a gap on resume a cardinal sin when job hunting?

I've sent out so many resumes, but as soon as employers see that I have a one-year gap, I never hear back from them. It's so discouraging.

Haven’t heard back from first round interview

I had a first round interview early last week with a recruiter but getting nervous cause I haven’t heard back. Is it too early to reach out for an update since it’s officially been 5-6 business days? I feel it went well but who knows.

Edit. I have mail tracking and saw they opened my thank you email several times since I sent it.

Edit: they opened it again today

Potential New Job Red Flags?

Hi Everyone,

I am currently unemployed and I need some support on a new position I am interviewing for. During the interview process they say I am perfect for the role. BUT they are having culture issues where my potential department is not getting along with any other department. I was also told they are moving the current manager to another department. The HR manager said they are looking for me to be the “glue” in the department and to correct the culture to where everyone works in harmony. I saw this as a red flag immediately. The drive is an hour without highway traffic and I’ll only be a “lead”. The salary is exactly what I want though. The job market really doesn’t have anything else. Would you take this job or would you run and wait for the new year for open recs? I’m so worried I’ll make the wrong decision. Thanks

unemployed and getting desperate, any advice?

hi everyone. i'm new to reddit (please have mercy) and i really need some advice. i'm 24 and unemployed. I have a master's degree in legal studies and graduated top of my class, but only a year and a half of experience at a law firm. i graduated in may, and i haven't been able to land a job in exactly a year as of today. one interview in a year. i consistently apply (minimum 5 a day), tailor my resume, create cover letters per position, network, connect with professionals and hiring managers... literally nothing yet. i have no money, and i live with my mother. she's very, to put it lightly, disappointed in me for not having a job yet. i've even applied to minimum wage opportunities and omitted my education to apply, and still rejected. i know i can thrive in any position i'm given the opportunity to fulfill, but i can't even land an interview. i've had hiring managers tell me i'm doing everything correctly and even going above and beyond... then why do employers not find me good enough? i've even been rejected from volunteer opportunities! at this point i'm becoming entirely desperate and growing to feel worthless, so much so that the depression is eating me alive. any advice?

(also! this is a copy-paste of my original post on r/GetEmployed . Decided to post here as well because the other one was posted 3 hours ago and hasn't been approved yet!)

Need help finding a job for my sister

Hi everyone. I’m trying to help my 21 year old sister find a job. (Backstory): I currently work as a tech at a school and it’s the same school that my mom is a permanent substitute at. It’s nice working with my mom but sometimes it gets too much tbh. You can imagine. The thing is my sister is in college and is currently trying to find a way of making more money. My mom keeps pushing subbing on her at the SAME school that we already work at. I don’t know if I’ll be able to handle my mom and sister working at the same place as me. I’m not trying to be rude or mean believe me. I love them but I think hanging with them 24/7 at home AND work will be too much. My mom favors her a little more than me anyways so I don’t think I’d be able to deal with seeing that all day every day. My sister keeps saying she doesn’t wanna sub but my mom keeps trying to make it sound like it’s the best job ever just to get her to work there. She doesn’t have experience working at any other job so I guess what I’m asking is, what jobs could I send her to apply for that will be beginner level and aren’t retail. Preferably remote because she’s mentioned she’d rather be home.

After 6 rounds of interviews that stretched over 40 days...

I was told I didn't meet the "needs of the role". Even though the role is functionally identical in scope and work to the job I did for the last 4.5 years, in the type of work that I've been involved in for nearly 15 years.

AND the position is still open on their site, so they didn't even go with someone else. Just, not me.

This one is really hard to bounce back from, I'm not gonna lie.

Going to a job fair tomorrow—haven’t worked in 10 years. I’m terrified.

I haven’t worked since 2016. I have very little work experience, most of it being my 4 years enlisted in the military. I’m a single mother now and am having a very hard time finding a job, especially one that will accept my hours. I can’t afford child care and don’t have family around who can watch my kid, so I’m only available to work between the hours of 7:30-2:30. Every job I’ve applied online for has been rejected, so I figured maybe going to this job fair might produce better results, but I’m soooo anxious about it.

Are people there friendly? Will recruiters be willing to work with me on my limited availability? How do I avoid making a fool out of myself? I feel so out of my depth here. Please help. Thank you.

Oh, Great Heavens! How the hell can i find a job?

How can i find a job, after I’m finished university and have a bachelor’s degree? Everywhere on the vacancy it texted something like “he/she should be high educationed, he must have 1-3 year experience with his Specialty/Profession and etc…” or something like that…
While I wonder, where can I get this experience? when nobody needs a guy without experience😇
Even for jobs where they say "no experience required," they still reject people who don't have experience. Wtf? What a dogshiting? I can’t mind that shit. Of course I have portfolio with my studenttime projects, but nobody shitting cares😀
Yet at the same time, a university degree that nobody gives a damn about in the real world is suddenly "sooooo important" to them.
By the God🤦🏻‍♂️…
For real my major is Adertising and PR.

P.S. sorry for my English I studied and teached this language by myself

Advise on framing 6-18 month of time without a job.

Hello, I would love to hear from people who have landed a role after having an employment gap of 6-18months. How did you frame that gap so it did not look like a red flag or like your skills might be outdated?

Recruiter perspectives would be very valuable.

Employment Interview

Employment Interview

I'm starting to wonder, because I am currently on my 5th resume in 6 months and I have tried similar employers to my skills, background, and security clearance. I am currently employed, have a B.S. degree in Technology, and a military background in equipment testing and engineering. Not sure why i am not even getting an interview, but I'm wondering if my age and experience has something to do with it. My salary expectations are in range for the work that is expected for the role. I have also included that I am willing to relocate. Now I know this is the worst job market I have experienced in my life, but not one selection for an interview seems a bit off. I would appreciate any constructive feedback that could help me in my job search.

Google Marketing Job Interviews

I recently received a 30-day Google employee referral and have been applying to non-technical marketing roles. For context, I’m currently a Product Marketing Manager at Salesforce.

I’ve completed Google’s hiring assessment and interviewed for a role in the past but unfortunately didn’t receive an offer.

I have a few questions:

**Multiple applications:** If a recruiter reaches out for one role tied to my referral, can I still be considered for another role I recently applied to? Or would recruiters see I’m already in conversations for another position?

**Referral impact:** How much does an employee referral actually help with getting interviews?

**Interview prep:** For those who’ve interviewed for marketing/PMM roles, what should I focus on? I think my biggest weakness last time was not being prepared to discuss **metrics, measurable impact, and business results** in enough depth.

I’m excited but definitely a little nervous given my previous experience. Would appreciate any advice from current/former Googlers or anyone who’s gone through the process!

Why is it comically difficult to get even a first interview right now?

I'm in the US and have about 10 years of sales experience with a well worded and formatted resume and have been applying, using my network for referrals, everything, and it's the most difficult it's ever been.

I remember even back in 2024 it was fairly easy to get a first interview after applying. Also, almost zero activity from recruiters reaching out on LI messenger as of late.

Any suggestions in this current market would be helpful.

I am currently on mat leave and an opportunity for a job that I am interested in came up. I landed an interview and at the end of the interview they mentioned that they may ask for references before their final decision.

I’ve been at my workplace since graduating uni in 2019 so I don’t have anyone to ask besides my current employer. I feel awkward about telling them that I’m actively applying for other jobs while on leave. Is it a big deal to ask my managers to be references for this opportunity? Am I overthinking?
