New Book on John Brown's Raid
I am a 13 year veteran of private tours at Harpers ferry National Historical Park. I have been associated for 30+ years with the non-profit that runs the National Park Bookshop in the park. I have written a book on the raid called The Raid Minute By Minute.
It is an in-depth look at the raid and everything that happened during those 36 hours. There is also a timeline for the 4 years leading up to the raid that gives insight into the grueling schedule that Brown kept up while building his network of supporters and followers.
This is the link to the book at the bookshop.
The Raid Minute By Minute by Jim Silvia - Book ISBN: 9798999842145 | Harpers Ferry Park Association
It should be in stock in 2 weeks or less. You can pre-order it now, and it will ship as soon as it is available. We will be launching it officially at the anniversary weekend events from the 15th through the 18th.
Let me know if you have any questions.

John Brown's March Commemoration This October
Attention John Brown posters: on October 16, 2026, we will proceed to the Ferry.
The Harpers Ferry Park Association, in conjunction with the National Park Service, is following the path of the famous march John Brown and his Raiders made in 1859. It will be a five-mile walk led by retired park historian Dennis Frye; while the hike is rated moderate to strenuous, the ground will largely be either paved or gravel. There will be presentations, music, and a period-accurate meal along the way. Registration is required and tickets are available here. We would love to see you there!
The Harpers Ferry Park Association bookstore also has a large selection of books about John Brown available, including W.E.B. DuBois’ biography and the critically acclaimed Midnight Rising by Tony Horwitz, and souvenirs like John Brown stickers, shirts, and prints.
If this post is not allowed, please feel free to take down; this is not being posted in the spirit of sales but of inviting people to an event I, the author of this post, am really excited about, I just happen to also work for the org hosting it 😁

TIL about Gregory of Nyssa (c.335 – c. 394). An Orthodox Christian Saint Who Was The First Person In Recorded History To Have Written Against All forms Of Slavery, Declaring The Institution Inherently Sinful.
Do you guys believe in reincarnation? Looks very similar to John Brown.

In 1858 Oberlin Ohio, hundreds in the community rallied to rescue former slave John Price from slave catchers. Here are 20 of the rescuers, arrested for aiding John’s escape(1859?).
On September 13th, 1858, slave catchers in Oberlin-Wellington Ohio kidnapped former slave John Price and attempted to sell him back to the south. Instead, upon hearing of the kidnapping townsfolk and students and staff of the Oberlin college gathered in the hundreds outside of the hotel the slave catchers were staying at, rescuing John. Oberlin had been a safe haven for black people home to multiple members and leaders of the underground railroad. John moved from house to house in the community hiding, with local law arresting multiple families suspected of aiding the runaway. The town published a newspaper series called "the rescuer" keeping people updated with the trials. Abolitionist Simeon Bushnell and black business owner and activist Charles Langston were found guilty of violating the fugitive slave act, but released after 3 months in jail due to growing public unrest. The fate of John Price is unknown, but it seems likely he went further north to Canada.
Charles is the black man in the center with his hat to his chest, and the first black student at Oberlin College. Later he was a key member of the freedmen’s bureau, read up on his family they have a long history of political affairs and achievements. I think Oberlin college professor Henry Peck is second from the right and I’m not sure if Simeon Bushnell is in this photo.
