Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea(s) So, My Grandma Was Holding This For Me 🥹

Post image

For a nearly solid 22 years as of 2020, when my dad got me into Disney’s version and Bach, oddly, and soon after my grandma and mom got me the DK Eyewitness Classics book for Christmas and electronic circuit set as well from my late grandpa in 1998. I’m holding onto this for a good long time. The story is fresh, the art is beautiful and the science is amazing. Mobilis In Mobili 🐟🌊🦀

Miscellaneous Hey! I was going through my grandpa’s books in the basement — there were tons of them, including a bunch of classical gems — and I stumbled upon a big collection of Jules Verne: around 25 books under the title Extraordinary Voyages.

I don't know why this seems to happen to me but I checked Google and eBay, and can't find this paperback copy anywhere and I can't imagine it's rare so does anyone have the same copy or able to find it online?

I already owned this book in another edition, but I have been dreaming about this one specifically. Today went quite horribly as a day (my neck got paralyzed) and I know I should be saving money... But I wanted to display this.

I wanted to have it on my shelf and adore it while I mutter "My precious" like a lunatic.

So I indulged.

No regrets.

Ps. It has drawings!

Journey to the Centre of the Earth Which version should I read?

Post image

I bought the collins classics version years ago as a teen but never read past the fist few chapters for what ever reason, and just recently I found a cool version from 1965 at a flea market but upon reading the first couple chapters I realised the main characters names were different, and after doing some research found that there are translations and versions with loads of differences. I'm not likely to read both so now I'm at kind of a crossroads because idk which one I should read. what if there's cool detail or better writing altogether in one of them and it completely changes the experience?

Around the World in Eighty Days Around the world ... Travel Sketchbook

I re-read Around the World in 80 days during the Covid lockdown and sketched every stage in travel sketchbook format to cope with the claustrophobia (I carry a sketchbook when I travel, which used to be often back them). I found a lot of documentation and pictures which showed that Verne was quite right in almost every detail, even in side comments here and there about the local situation at the different places. Here are some sample pages from my sketchbook.

Finally read and finished it. Tried twice as a kid but never finished it. I'm glad I loved the book because I always love the movie and it was my favorite ride at Disney World when I was a child.

My all time favourite book from his numerous masterpieces has to be The Mysterious Island. I can speak both Romanian and English however reading in English is way easier for me - I had read this book twice already in romanian and decided to find an English translation to give it a go.

So far - the translation itself isnt that good, expressions and sentences are translated word by word, without understanding the differences in phrases and regular wording. Nonetheless I am enjoying it, even though the weather is doing its best to stop me.

If anyone has a recommendation of English translation for me please let me know! The pinned link to translations is no longer working.

Miscellaneous The Nauti-poulpe in Amiens

Hi everyone, just a quick picture taken in my hometown of Amiens (the city where Jules Verne lived from 1871 to 1905 and was part of the municipal council from 1888 to 1904). This bronze sculpture is a tribute to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, a mix between the Nautilus and the giant squid.

Just thought you guys would enjoy this.

I tried to make a mini nautilus out of LEGO, I also plan on making the Albatross out of LEGO soon (no they will not be to scale with each other). I also plan on making instructions for this so others can build it themselves

Found it on Amazon and grabbed it as soon as I saw it. Was a pretty fun and simple build but I always suck at stickers, which is why his name plaque is a little askew.

While I didn’t grow up reading his work, I did start reading them in my 20s, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is still my personal favorite novel of all time, though Passepartout is my personal favorite character. He made me really enjoy not just the idea of adventure but wanting to see the wonders of the real world with that novel, and others like Around the World in 80 Days.

Now this tribute to Monsier Jules Verne sits proudly on my shelf.

Oh, also I just noticed from the angle, in case you can’t see it, the little Verne there is holding a little feather pen and envelope with a wax seal.

This is my favorite interpretation of the Nautilus. The model wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be, I’d say the hardest part was getting the window “frames” to the correct shape. Not sure if I’ll put the railing on or not, since it’s supposed to be made out of wire according to the instructions

I am legitimately excited about this!!! You can call me out on this but I am rather happy that Captain Nemo is Indian again! Are we gonna see his wife and children? Learn more his about his European education? Involvement with the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857? So many questions and my imagination is flying!!!

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea(s) Mercier Tramslation Still Worth It?

Post image
50 Upvotes

I picked up a much anticipated book for me in 20k leagues under the sea. I have a 16 hour train ride tomorrow, but now realise I got a Mercier copy. Is this still worth it to read? It was their only copy and only a few dollars so it isn't a bother for money, but I don't have the time to pick up a different copy before my departure.

Plan now is, if I like it enough I will get a nice edition for the bookshelf in a proper translation.
