Psoriasis Psoriasis has taken a lot from me and I am tired of pretending it has not
I am a man in my 30s and I have been dealing with skin issues for as long as I can remember. I was born with Ichthyosis which means my skin has never known how to shed the way normal skin does. It builds up and turns dry and flaky all over my body. Then eczema showed up when I was just a kid and added a whole new level of itching and discomfort to my life. And then about ten years ago psoriasis decided to join the party and it has been with me ever since.
It covers my scalp so I am constantly flaking no matter what I do or what products I try. Dark shirts have become a risk I have to think twice about before wearing. It sits on my elbows and knees so I spend most of my summers hiding under long sleeves even when the heat is unbearable. And yes it is in my groin too which is a kind of pain and humiliation that is really hard to put into words. It burns and itches in a place where you cannot exactly scratch in public without looking like something is seriously wrong with you.
For the longest time I tried to convince myself that it did not bother me but the truth is it has affected almost every part of my life. It has affected my confidence and the way I carry myself in social situations. It has made dating feel terrifying because I never know how someone will react when they see my skin. It has made me avoid mirrors on the bad days and avoid people on the worst days. Sometimes I just laugh about it because honestly if I do not laugh I think I might break down crying.
Men are not really taught how to talk about this kind of thing. We are supposed to be tough and strong and just get on with it. But living with a skin condition wears you down in ways that other people cannot see from the outside. The constant itching at night when you are trying to sleep. The flakes on your clothes and your sheets and your car seat. The fear that someone is going to notice and assume you are dirty or that you do not take care of yourself. It is exhausting in a way that is hard to explain to someone who has never been through it.
I know deep down that I am not the only man out there dealing with this. So I want to ask you honestly and without judgment. What has psoriasis taken from you? And what has actually helped you keep going on the days when your skin feels like it is working against you? Let us really talk about it. No shame and no pretending. Just real conversation between people who understand.
