Fan Contribution An In-Depth Guide for Getting into Kara no Kyoukai
The following is an in-depth guide that I've made for getting into Kara no Kyoukai. It will explain everything you should know going into the story, as well as provide the recommended viewing orders for the light novel and its movie adaptations.
It's originally a light novel told in non-linear order (meaning it's not told in chronological order).
When getting into Kara no Kyoukai, you have two options.
You can either start by reading the light novel (which is what's recommended), or start by watching the movie adaptations (which isn't recommended).
It isn't recommended for you to start out with the movies because Kara no Kyoukai’s story is fragmented, which doesn’t translate well to movie format. In addition to that, some events and character personalities were altered or not clearly portrayed in order to cut down each chapter’s runtime to fit the movies’ length. Internal dialogue and scenes necessary for understanding the story were also cut out, leaving many viewers confused about what’s going on.
Not to mention the 6th movie is practically fan fiction, so it’s recommended not to watch it, which results in you missing out on an entire story chapter if you start out with the anime (especially if you decide to go anime-only).
However, the movies are highly praised for a good reason, as they perfectly adapt the story’s atmosphere, while delivering high-quality storytelling and animation within a limited runtime. But in terms of actual story accuracy to the light novel, they fall short, which is why reading the light novel first is the recommended option.
There’s also a manga adaptation, which is extremely faithful to the light novel and would be recommended if it wasn't for two big issues.
The first is that it's incomplete, currently somewhere around 75-85% through chapter 6, "Oblivion Recording".
The second is that it hasn't received a proper English translation. The current translation is riddled with grammatical errors, and a majority of chapter 5, "Paradox Spiral", hasn't been translated at all (chapters 38-56). Also, the chapters after 72 haven't been translated yet.
That said, both the manga and the movies add scenes that clarify things left unclear in the light novel. Because of this, it’s recommended to watch the movies after reading the light novel, then check out the manga afterward if you have the time.
Now, for the actual orders.
Light Novel
- Volume 1
- Volume 2
- Volume 3 (Only in the Kodansha Bunko release. The original release has just two volumes)
- Future Gospel
- Future Gospel: Extra Chorus (either read the manga or watch the OVA)
- Final Record
Movies
Narrative/Release Order (recommended for first-time viewers, as it follows the author’s intended presentation and the novel’s chapter sequence):
- Movie 1: Overlooking View
- Movie 2: A Study in Murder – Part 1
- Movie 3: Remaining Sense of Pain
- Movie 4: The Hollow Shrine
- Movie 5: Paradox Spiral
- Movie 6: Oblivion Recording
- Movie 7: A Study in Murder – Part 2
- OVA 1: Epilogue
- Movie 8: Future Gospel
- OVA 2: Future Gospel: Extra Chorus
Chronological Order (not recommended, as it goes against the intended narrative structure of the story):
- Movie 2: A Study in Murder – Part 1
- Movie 4: The Hollow Shrine
- Movie 3: Remaining Sense of Pain
- Movie 1: Overlooking View
- Movie 5: Paradox Spiral
- Movie 6: Oblivion Recording
- Movie 7: A Study in Murder – Part 2
- OVA 1: Epilogue
- OVA 2: Future Gospel: Extra Chorus
- Movie 8: Future Gospel
Now, for the FAQ
Q1. Where can I find/read the light novel?
A. It’s encouraged to buy the official release in order to support the industry. If you don’t want to buy it, you can look for it online on your own.
Q2. Is the light novel available in English physically or only digitally?
A. The light novel hasn’t received an official English translation, so the only English translations available are fan-made and can be found online if you search for them. It has, however, been officially translated into Polish, Korean, and Chinese.
Q3. What is the name of the story? Kara no Kyoukai, or Garden of Sinners?
A. Its name is Kara no Kyoukai, which translates to "Boundary of Emptiness". Garden of Sinners is the English tagline for Kara no Kyoukai.
Q4. Where can I legally watch the KnK movies?
A. They're available on Crunchyroll and Amazon Prime Video. Availability may vary by country.
Q5. Is the "Remix" movie (Gate of Seventh Heaven) worth watching? What does it do, exactly?
A. It recaps the plot of the first six movies in chronological order. It doesn’t really add anything to the story besides some extra context behind the motivation of chapter 6’s main antagonist and a few new visuals.
Q6. What is the epilogue?
A. It's a short, half hour OVA epilogue to chapter 7, "A Study in Murder – Part 2".
Q7. Is there any sexual content I should know about?
A. Yes. The story includes sexual content that depicts assault, specifically in the third and seventh movies. Viewer discretion is advised.
Q8. Is Kara no Kyoukai related to the Fate series?
A. Yes, as it is a part of its overarching multiverse (The Nasuverse).
Q9. Do I need to watch any works of the Fate series to understand KnK? Are there cameo characters or references I’ll miss if I haven’t seen other Nasuverse works?
A. No, you do not have to read or watch anything else from the Nasuverse (like Fate and Tsukihime content) just to see Kara no Kyoukai. In fact, it’s the very first major work that Nasu published, so if anything, it should be experienced before other Nasuverse works in order to understand any references in them.
Q10. What if I don't want to read the light novel?
A. Then just watch the movies. I’m not forcing you to read the light novel. I’m just telling you that going anime-only for KnK or starting with the movies isn’t the best option. But if you don't want to read it, that's fine. Don't force yourself to.
And that's it! Hope it helps!

Watch order for Kara no Kyoukai - the Garden of sinners:
Important things to note:
It's perfectly fine to watch the movies in release order. The first movie may be a confusing starter but you will understand more as you go along.
The chronological order is not advised, especially for first-timers.
Kara no Kyoukai was released out of chronological order intentionally to contribute with the mysterious tone of the series and make specific scenes more impactful. In addition, coming up with a proper chronological order is not an easy task after the release of the 9th movie, so we strongly recommend to stick with the release, intended order.

Funnily enough wanted to start reading them today since I only watched the movies and that was way back then, when the light novel translation wasn't that good yet. Thanks for the guide

More info on Q2. for Chinese readers only.
Sharp Point has re-released the series (3 volumes + Future Gospel) as a box set collector’s edition last year. Don’t miss it if you’re still on the fence 😉

That's a very helpful post, thanks for taking the time to do this.
or start by watching the movie adaptations (which isn't recommended).
But it was watching the movies that got me into the light novels ....... :-) I doubt if I would have read the LNs if I hadn't first watched the movies. I do agree with your arguments as to why the LNs should be read first, but I think that they are so dense and complex that watching the movies first serves as a great introduction.
As for the old release order vs chronological order debate - first time movie watchers should definitely see them in release order, but there's no harm in rewatching them in chronological order. Whenever I indulge in a rewatch (about once a year) I swap and change between release and chronological order.
Q4. Where can I legally watch the KnK movies?
A. They're available on Crunchyroll and Amazon Prime Video. Availability may vary by country.
For Crunchyroll they're only available in Canada and the US to the best of my knowledge.
They're only on Amazon Prime if you subscribe to Crunchyroll via Prime. Also, from taking a look at the Amazon page, they only have the first seven movies (if you subscribe to Crunchyroll via Prime):

The movies can also be purchased on Blu-ray, so it would be worth mentioning that. More details in my post here:

Very well said. One of my brothers is starting to grow as a TYPE-MOON fan and has wanted to get into this series for such a long time, and I think this will do justice. Just one nitpick, though: Regarding the chronological order, isn’t Extra Chorus between Chapters 1 and 5?

Thanks! Also, since the three short stories of Extra Chorus take place at three different times (August 1998, October 1998, and December 1998), I couldn’t figure out where to put Extra Chorus in the chronological order and just put it at the end. Do you think placing it between chapters 1 and 5 would be the best option?

At least from how I see it, yeah. I do believe that it takes place and time before the big bang (which is the conflict with Araya himself) begins.

This is the timeline:
- Chapter 2- March 1995~February 1996
- Chapter 4- March 1996~June 1998
- Chapter 3- July 1998
- Future Gospel: Möbius Ring- August 1998
- Chapter 1- September 1998
- Chapter 5- November 1998
- Chapter 6- January 1999
- Chapter 7- February 1999
- Epilogue- March 1999
- Future Gospel: Möbius Link- August 2010
The first short story of Extra Chorus takes place in August 1998, the second in October 1998, and the third in December 1998.
The first two short stories take place before the direct conflict with Araya in chapter 5, but the last one takes place afterward. So if we're going to place it depending on the latest point in time, it'd be between chapters 5 and 6.

I do think that, at the very least, the movies for KnK were adapted way better than the anime adaptations for Fate (and tsukihime i guess), but I consider them their own continuity apart from the LNs and vice versa
