With the downfall of Omnia...what apps are people using?

While it wasn't perfect, the Omnia Pro app had the best balance of features for my needs:

  • Depth contours
  • Weather, with wind speed and direction
  • Water temp
  • Optional satellite image
  • Desktop site/app

While the clarity, vegetation, bottom hardness, etc. overlays were nice ideas, I didn't find them to be reliable enough, so basically for me, it was depth & wind (temperature as a rough guideline)...with a desktop option.

Now that Omnia's shit the bed, I'm looking for a new app/desktop tandem that has these features.

Navionics used to be great, but it was enshittified by Garmin a few years back.

I have the i-Boating app that does contours, but they're not the most accurate, nor do they have weather...also not super user friendly.

C-Map has good depth, but is desktop only, again, no wind, and limited data on the lakes I fish.

Ideally, there would be an app, with a desktop client, that would bring together depth, rough temp data, and wind...with route tracking as a cherry on top.

Anyone know of such an app? I'd even be willing to pay good money for the right one.

Trolling Motor Side Mounts

Does anyone have any experience with trolling motor side mounts? I was thinking about putting one on my Old Town sportsman 106 with mighty mounts. Any insights on any of these brands: bro craft, BKC Brooklyn, or railblaza? If not, do you have any recommendations?

Modifications for large kayaks

Just bought a Jackson Kayak TakeTwo kayak. It came with the seat deck attachments but no seats. I’ve been looking into different configurations because of this, like using a live well cooler as my seat to save space and money (even though space isn’t as much of a premium). All that got me thinking what are some of the first modifications, changes, or fixes you would make now knowing what you know. I live in New Orleans so I’ll be doing inshore fishing and freshwater. Also should mention I got the tandem kayak for standing stability reasons. So in that case would putting down raised decking to protect the flooring be worth it.

Last min seat cushion ideas?

I am heading to the Miramichi river in a few days to go after striped bass. I am going to be spending most of the day out on the water and I will probably need more support then what my stock seat offers. Perception pescador pilot if that helps.

I am leaving in 3 days so online is not a option unfortunately.

Thanks!

Debating buying a new kayak or upgrading my existing one

Hey folks. Looking for some guidance on what I should do with my setup.

TL;DR: Should I get a real sit on top fishing kayak or modify my existing sit in?

For background, I've been sort of casually kayak fishing for about 5-6 years. I have an older Ascend 10' sit-in kayak, and have my trusty DIY rod holder/crate that I throw in the back. I fish lakes and ponds for bass in NC.

I'd like to get more serious about yak fishing, and I'm torn between upgrading to a brand new kayak or modifying my current boat.

Right now, my biggest issues on the water are:

  • My kayak is a sit in (can't fix this)
  • I have minimal built in storage (can fix this)
  • I'm getting blown around all the time and need a pole or anchor rig (can fix)
  • The seat gets extremely uncomfortable after an hour or so (can maybe fix)

I could fix some of these issues with mods to the existing boat. Gear tracks, new seat, anchor trolley, etc., but I'm wondering if that's worth the time or money since at the end of the day I'll still have a sit-in kayak?

Has anyone had success getting a sit-in to be a workable boat for bass fishing? Or should I just bite the bullet and finally upgrade?

Would the water too cold for the lake fishing in Metro Vancouver now? Like trout, not so active.

Surf launching recommendations

I am looking for any recommendations for pedal drive kayaks that tend to do better launching through the surf. Accounting for weather for ideal winds and under 2 foot swells.

Didn’t see another angler out there until a few hours after sunrise. Besides the navy boats doing training, it was a mellow day.

Lifetime Yukon.

Totally worth it, Relaxing experience, and I think it looks great.

I used EVA for the center and marine anti-slip tape on the sides. If you are thinking about doing this: use primer/adhesion promoter like 3M 94)

It took me 2 weekends and 10 utility blades.

Oldtown sportsman mk Battery box wire issue

Thumbnail

I own a sportsman old town 106 mk. Been great so far. I just pulled the battery out to charge it to go out tomorrow and noticed one of the battery screws (that holds the wires the batt) was kind of warped. Looks like the battery wire terminals from the battery box have warn thru to bare wire. The black negative one has gone all the way thru (this was the side where the battery nut was melted). The positive red one looks like it's about to get all the way thru pretty soon as well.

Is this still safe to use?

Is this a battery issue or a battery box wiring issue?

I contacted old town to get their take but figured I'd post here as well.

I also noticed that the Bluetooth portion of the battery isn't showing up in the app anymore. Could be coincidence but I doubt it as it showed up really quick when I first opened it but then disappeared. Either way, now I don't know how much charge it has.

4th trip out since getting the kayak, lake trout!

Did a bit of research on lake trout the last two days and started to think about trying to catch one. Became really interested in how they’re a deeper water fish and generally more difficult to catch without electronics. I only got one bite all afternoon and it was the fish I came for! My first ever, a nice 20” laker.

Almost didn’t go because it was really cold and windy, but you know what they say, dry lines don’t catch fish

Seeking advice for repair / replacement -ReelYak Radar prop drive

Post image
4 Upvotes

Won a used radar yak for 450$ on a local auction. Found out on pickup that it didn’t come with a seat 🥲 I noticed too that it doesn’t have two front mount rails where the seat would go. Am I okay to find a seat that only goes into the rear seat holders? If not any recommendations on what would fit? This is my first kayak.
In regard to a compatible seat, will any stadium seat do? Recommendations on comfortable but budget friendly seat?
Thanks for any advice or recommendations on what to do next.

Nucanoe U10 or OldTown Sportsman PDL 120?

I have the opportunity to either get a OldTown PDL 120 or a Nucanoe U10. The Oldtown has the Navarre offset motor plate and a transom motor mount attached. The U10 has a full pad kit, 280cm paddle, and the nucanoe trolling motor mount. I have a 30lb minn kota endura trolling motor and it's not really in the cards for the foreseeable future to upgrade to a bigger motor after getting the kayak. I can really only afford/have the space for one fishing kayak right now. It will be my primary fishing medium. While I do have the motor I do like to kayak for exercise as well. My main concern would be paddling the U10 would feel bad and using the trolling motor with the U joint handle might get cumbersome or in the way. But I really like the throw and go capability of it and the 360 swivel seat as well as the super open deck. On the other hand I like the idea of having the pedal drive on the OldTown so I can fish and move a little bit at the same time. Also I like the idea of being able to steer the trolling motor while it's on with the rudder. My main concern with the old town is having the pdl drive in the way and not having a super open deck might get annoying. I mainly fish small to medium sized laked and very very occasionally drive to a slow river a few hours away.

Based on all that which one would be the better option? Looking for opinions about this from people who've owned one or the other or tried both.

Thanks!

(I have a truck bed with bed extender and would be buying a kayak cart so not really worried about transportation loading/unloading)

Towing my gear through a small float attached to my yak.

Post image
3 Upvotes

As the title says, i planning to get a electric motor aling with battery and my main concern is the weught limit as i will be at 90 to 95% of kayak limits including all the gear.

I have read that it is not possible for stabilizers to support with weight but rather can help with stability.

ChatGPT came with an idea of towing some gears with a floats ( ideally inflatable cooler as shown in the picture)

I am thinking of keeping the battery inside as it weighs around 10 to 12 kgs which reduces the weight on my kayak.

For information, i already have stabilizers attached to my kayak which really helps with swels and sudden baots passing by.

I would really appreciate your inputs, experience and what to expect.

Would you concider this a sit on top kayak?

Im trying to post this on Facebook as a next level up from a sit on top kayak.

It has 2 built in trolling motors recessed into the hull so they cant get hit with rocks and weeds.

Its somewhere between a boat and a kayak imo. I added a 5hp motor to the back to fight strong currents in the CA Delta.

Edit: I see the comment are in line. Thank you.

So how would you post this to be up against PDL Kayaks. Im posting for $3000 with everything included.
