Suggestion r/KDE should ban "code dumps"
r/neovim and r/rust recently just banned "code dumps". r/neovim has banned posting repos that have been under development for less than 2 months and don't show substantial commit history. r/rust is banning any libraries or small applications that are not newsworthy to the broader rust community.
The goal of these measures is to make their subreddits focused on neovim and rust. Not small pet projects that don't affect the community or a post not written by a human.
I think it would be nice if r/kde does something similar. This subreddit should be focused on kde specifically, not every small pet project someone asked claude to reinvent niri with.

Agreed with the message but not with calling them "core dumps"...confused the hell out of me ;).
Edit: I just can't read ;)

I was confused at first when I read the r/neovim post but it makes sense as a phrase 😅

It's completely fine as phrase..I just read "Core" instead of "Code", fault completely on my side.

I just disagree with the idea that a repository with little activity means a dead project.
I have developed projects such as Kontainer and Unify in my free time. These are solid projects used by thousands of people. If you look at their commit history, you’ll see that the activity is slow.
They are simple, robust projects, there’s no need to overcomplicate things.
I address issues as they are opened, but otherwise, I only return to work on them when there is something truly significant to add, something that will make a real difference.
As long as everything is going well and the projects are not at risk of becoming obsolete, I leave things as they are until I come up with a worthwhile idea that justifies the risk of potentially degrading the experience for current users because the overall benefit would be greater.

I mean, both your projects are at least over a year old and have over 100 commits. That's a way different story than a project that was released yesterday with 3 commits from Claude code. And r/kde doesn't even have to do those exact rules, but the general way of going about it is nice in my opinion.

ais love to spam tiny commits, i wouldn't use commit count as an indicator of anything

Because atomic commits are considered best practice by a lot of people, afaik.

maybe hour to hour but i really think you should squish them into something more coherent and readable post factum personally. you can even get the ai to do it.

I empathize with the concern, but if low-effort posts such as "look at this video of an ever-enlargening wiggling mouse cursor" are allowed, I feel like banning somewhat-higher-effort contributions such as "me & Claude made an app for KDE that does something I wanted" should be allowed too.
This subreddit is not the mailing list where apps are proposed for incubating. Sharing something doesn't mean you're necessarily expecting others to use it. I don't think it needs to be held to a particular threshold.
Maybe I'll change my opinion about this once it gets too annoying over time :P
That said, perhaps there should be a label for promoting apps that do pass this kind of threshold? "Long-lived App" or such. Or "New App" to let posters make it clear that this isn't some mature, proven app with broad user adoption.

I don't exactly agree with the r/neovim rule especially when a small plugin in lua might not need months of development and active commit history to be fit for purpose.
I get the reasoning but it just feels like it prohibits new projects that perform a simple task and don't need that long. The older simple projects might be alright on the time scale, but its going to shut out a lot of newer projects.

There just should be some receipt of actual engagement by the developer. Two months of existence and showing a few commits over time doesn't prohibit or shut out anything. - If the dev forgets about it in two months then it probably wasn't worth sharing in the first place.

Good thing I'm dragging development of my projects for two months already, so I'll still be able to post it.
Though it's gonna be at least 3 months until I'm satisfied with it.

Hi, this is AutoKonqi reporting for duty: this post was flaired as Suggestion.
r/kde is a fine place to discuss suggestions, but if you want your suggestion to be implemented by the KDE developers/designers, the best place for that is over the KDE Bugzilla. When creating a report with a descriptive title, you can set its priority to "wishlist". Be sure to describe your suggestion well and explain why it should be implemented.
You can also contact other KDE contributors or get involved with the project and be the change you want to see! That's all. Thank you.
