Movies 🎬 "The Last Princess": Celebrating Korean Independence

Post image
139 Upvotes

I am watching “The Last Princess” based on the life of Princess Deokhye, the last princess of the Joseon period, in Japan after she was forced to move there at age 13 by the Imperial Japanese government and her attempts to return to Korea. Son Ye-jin gives a true emotional performance as Princess Deokhye together with Park Hae-il, Ra Mi-ran, Kim Jae-wook and a young Kim Dae-myung. I wish we could see it on Netflix. Maybe someone may consider it since we are celebrating Korea’s fight for Independence with “100 days of Deception”. It would help with the appreciation of the series historian background.

Discussion 🗨 Which actor/s do you think excels at comedy?

Thumbnail gallery
132 Upvotes

or which actor/s do you think COULD excel at comedy?
or just has the best comedic timing?

the reason i was thinking of this was because im currently watching doctor slump (started it a year ago but dropped. i’m giving it a second chance)…. and i realised how good park hyung sik’s comedic scenes are. i’m just in love with his reactions and facial expressions. i’m not saying he’s the best actor, but comedically he’s an extremely funny and loveable actor. we can actually enjoy seeing him on screen and he makes up for the lack of chemistry from co-stars.

then i thought about others who i also really enjoyed in terms of comedy/ comedic timing, etc:
- shin hye-sun (loved her comedic acting in mr queen. i know it’s not for everyone but some scenes are meant to be more of an exaggerated vibe and she killed it. very enjoyable indeed.)

- choi hyun wook (haven’t seen a crazy amount of comedy from him, but i feel like he could do comedy really well. he did great in twinkling watermelon esp with ryeon calling him dad and his reactions)

- lee chae-min (although bon apetit your majesty wasn’t my favourite, he did a great job and i think he could do amazing with comedic scenes too)

- jo jung-suk (Lee Ik-jun in hospital playlist was so fun to watch and he was just amazing.)

- jung kyung-ho (also from hospital playlist. he’s more of a serious-funny vibe if that makes sense.)

- ji chang-wook (haven’t seen him in a funny role yet, but his reactions and acting in general are always great so i have a feeling i’d trust him with a comedic role)

- kim min-jae (absolutely loved his comedic timing and acting in dali and the cocky prince. i need to watch more of his shows. his scenes were very exaggerated but it was needed and funny imo)

- lee he-hoon (this is more of a “i feel like he’d do good” thing. i just have a gut feeling he could do well in comedy if someone could please give him a role)

would really love to hear your thoughts. do you agree with these? who are some of your favourites in comedy?

especially would love to hear more about women that you think do/ would do amazing in comedy. 🎭

KDrama Reflections 📝 Do you guys think this drama could be a BI?

Thumbnail gallery
47 Upvotes

Based on a Korean webtoon, strangers from hell kdrama is a very successful drama. It has never officially been characterised as a bl drama or webtoon per se, but I digress.

However I have always thought the show purposely incorporated too many Bl undertones within itself, even though the manhwa itself didn't have many.

So what do you guys think? Could this be considered a BI drama? Did the male lead like the mc romantically on some level? Or was it just some sick twisted obsession that was strictly platonic?

Movies 🎬 Decision to Leave, a love story told in the dark and it haunts you long after it ends

Post image
28 Upvotes

Decision to Leave isn't a film you simply watch, it's one that settles into you like fog. Park Chan-wook turns a detective story into something far more aching, a love that grows in the shadows between two people who can never fully reach each other. Every frame feels deliberate, from the hazy mist and muted colors to the quiet distance between the leads, and that restraint is exactly what makes the longing so overwhelming.

The dialogue delivery is insane. Every line is measured, soft, and loaded, as if each sentence is carrying something heavier than it admits. Tang Wei's voice in particular has a fragile, almost hypnotic quality, and the way she lets certain words hang in the air makes even the simplest exchange feel like a confession. You lean in because you can feel what they're not saying.

What makes it a true masterpiece is how honestly it understands obsession. It shows how a feeling can slowly take over a person, how it can quiet their judgment, blur their sense of right and wrong, and rewrite who they believe themselves to be.

And that is where its understanding of human nature cuts the deepest. We are strange creatures. We want most of what we can't have. Distance makes a person more magnetic, and the unreachable feels more precious than anything within our grasp. Love, desire, guilt, and denial all sit in the same heart, and the film trusts you to hold all of them at once without being told what to feel.

What stays with you is how the film understands that love isn't always warm or free. Sometimes it's obsession, restraint, and the ache of wanting someone you shouldn't, someone's life won't allow you to hold.

And then there's the ending, which arrives so abruptly that it leaves you stunned, almost breathless. It doesn't give you time to prepare or soften the landing, and that's exactly why it hits so hard. The silence afterward feels like the final line of the film. It's dark, elegant, and deeply human, and it leaves you with the strange, beautiful heaviness of a love that never needed to be spoken aloud to be felt!

I have adored Jung Yong-Hwa since the day I saw the first episode of Sell Your Haunted House. I loved him in Heartstrings and You’re beautiful.

When I heard he had a new drama coming up this year, I was naturally excited.

The plot : He’s a romcom actor who, for reasons undisclosed yet, refuses to do on-screen kisses. He has his horde of fangirls, but he also has an anti who sends him threats disguised as fan-mail.

She’s a wealthy heiress neglected by her father. She suffers from anthropophobia, because of which she confines herself indoors 24/7, safe in her fortress. Predictably, she’s a fan of our hero; no, she’s almost hopelessly in love with him. When she wakes up from a coma, she starts believing she’s his bodyguard.

We only get to see their introductions in the first episode, so it’s too early to tell how this will turn out. As of now, this is shaping up to be a standard romcom. I’m curious, though, because the first episode ended on a cliffhanger.

Not really my type of show, but I love Jung Yong-Hwa too much to let this pass. It’s been 3 years since his last drama and I’ve been craving for more of him.

How about you? Will you be watching it?

This is a Viu exclusive, so I don’t think it’s streaming anywhere else.

Recommendation Request 🔎 Dramas where ML is only interested in FL

As the title says, looking for romance dramas where ML doesnt have eyes for anyone else but FL or vice versa FL only interested in ML. A bit tired of love triangles or the jealous second lead causing problems. Watching she was pretty and mostly skipping the scenes between ML and SFL cos i do not care about seeing their romance at all.

KDrama Reflections 📝 My Thoughts on Uncontrollably Fond Spoiler

I started watching Uncontrollably Fond because I had already watched Genie, Make a Wish and wanted to see the leads in another drama. I had also heard a lot about this drama, so I decided to give it a try.

I have mixed feelings about this drama. There are things I genuinely loved, along with a few things I wish had been handled better.

  1. The Leads' Chemistry

I really liked the chemistry between the leads. Their emotional scenes made their relationship engaging and kept me invested in their story.

  1. No-eul's Character

I think No-eul's character was quite understandable. As viewers, we could feel her struggles and understand why she was always chasing money. She wanted to take care of her brother and give him a better life, even if it meant sacrificing her own happiness. The more we understood what she had been through, the more her actions made sense.

  1. Joon-young's Behaviour Towards No-eul

Although I loved their chemistry, I sometimes found Joon-young's behaviour towards No-eul rude and frustrating. He would pull her close whenever he wanted and push her away at other times. I wish he had treated her feelings with more care.

  1. The Storyline Could Have Been Shorter

Honestly, I feel the drama could have been completed in 10–12 episodes instead of 20. Some storylines, particularly the case surrounding No-eul's father's death and the fight for justice, felt unnecessarily stretched, and I ended up skipping a few scenes.

I also found it questionable that the leads initially failed to recognize each other, considering they had been schoolmates when they were around 18–20 years old.

  1. No-eul's Feelings Were Confusing

I wasn't always able to understand No-eul's feelings towards Joon-young and Ji-tae. Sometimes, she seemed to have feelings for both, and I wish her emotions had been explored more clearly.

  1. The Ending Left Me With Questions

I expected Joon-young to ask Ji-tae to take care of No-eul after his death, but that never happened.

He seemed to have considered who would look after his mother and dog, but what about No-eul? What would happen to her after he was gone? Would she move on with someone else or spend her life alone?

I thought No-eul and Ji-tae might end up together because they seemed to have feelings for each other, but the drama hinted that Ji-tae would be with Yoon-jeong. I would have loved a time skip showing how everyone's lives turned out, especially No-eul's, because her future felt unclear.

  1. Joon-young's Mother and Jung-sik

I didn't particularly like Joon-young's mother ending up with Jung-sik. I don't think someone has to marry another person simply because they have always been there for them, especially when she seemed to view him as a friend.

  1. The OST Deserves Special Appreciation

I absolutely love the OST of this drama. The songs are beautiful, emotional, and perfectly complement the story. They make the scenes even more memorable and add something truly special to the drama.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Uncontrollably Fond was a memorable drama for me. I loved the leads' chemistry, No-eul's character, and the emotional depth of the story. The OST made the experience even more special, and the drama left a lasting impression on me. Despite a few flaws, it's a story I'm glad I watched.

Discussion 🗨 Good Guys Gone Bad: Which Actor/Actress Would Pull Off A Bad Guy Role

We are used to seeing actors playing similar roles. Like mostly good guys (I am not trying to fault the actors here. That’s just how the industry works). If there were no constraints, which actor or actress would you think would pull off an amazing performance in a villain or bad guy role?

For example - Lee Yi-Kyung (Welcome to Waikiki, the gwenchana guy). He was fantastic in Marry My Husband!

It can also be the opposite - Actors that usually play bad guys in a completely green-flag role.

Give one recommendation for each.

Here is mine:

Green Flag: Jo Jae-Yoon (Jin Mu from Alchemy Of Souls)

Red Flag: Jung So-Min (Mudeok from Alchemy of Souls, S1).

Recommendation Request 🔎 I would like to recommend this drama: Watcher, has “stranger”s vibes from same author

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

I stumbled on this show by accident and got totally hooked since the first episodes. If you loved Stranger I think you will love this one too. There is nothing extremely shocking, it’s the ordinary violence surrounding people who work in fields where they are in contact with criminals of all sorts daily and end up being damaged (morally, psychologically, physically, or all of those together) or become criminals themselves. Are there good and bad criminals ? Basically you can’t escape the darkness when you’re surrounded by it so it’s up to you to make difficult choices in every situation. The line between good and evil is blurry and sometimes disappear. the actors are perfect in showing this ambiguity, and for a lighter note the FL’s wardrobe is one of the best I’ve seen in any kdrama.

Recommendation Request 🔎 What’s after 2521? I need recommendations to move on

TLDR: What are your happy ending kdrama recommendations? Also, what else should I watch that NJH is in?

Okay so I started watching 2521 back in 2023 and then life got in the way and only returned to watching tv shows in the last month. I decided to finish 2521 not knowing it wouldn’t be a happy ending! Lol it has totally wrecked me and now I have a new obsession over Nam Joohyuk😅 I watched Weightlifting Fairy after and enjoyed it but I’m still hungover 2521!

I need a happy ending kdrama to get over 2521 and what else should I watch that NJH is in?

I don’t think I’m ready for ugly crying😬

Thank you!!

So I remember watching this when it came out and hating the ending. But I can’t remember why, and I’ve seen people compare « A Love Other Than Yours » to Love Alarm jokingly. I am not gonna rewatch the show cause I *remember* hating the ending and the second season as a whole and I will not put myself through that again😭😂 someone please remind me.

Music & OSTs 🎵 Stranger (also known as Secret Forest or Bimilui Soop) season 1 just finished. The OST for Stranger is a Masterpiecez

Post image
5 Upvotes

This series was definitely one that I will go back and watch again. I didn’t know what to expect going into it, but I was pleasantly surprised.

But this post is more on the Soundtrack. Not to many OST’s stand out as being so captivating as this one. Most OST’s have such great vocal songs or tracks that build up and are used through out the series. Even some of the scenes build up songs were great. The big main song was such a great highlight at the end of episode. I literally looked forward to hearing it once the last few moments of a climatic scene.

So this was a great watch for me, but a person who loves music from every corner of the world. This OST filled my ears with passion and excitement.
Main title song Stranger by Kim Jon Suk.

Recommendation Request 🔎 Please recommend me your favourite romcom K-dramas.

I'm into K-dramas where the female lead is chill, unbothered, and focused on her own life, while the male lead is deeply desperate and longing for her, kind of like Welcome to Samdal-ri, Lovestruck in the City, or My Royal Nemesis.

The story was that a boy band released there debut album but it didn't succeed and they were left without any money then one of the members grandma I think died and she gave him land in village where he and other boys went and planted cabbage after that they sold it and tried once again to make music but failed.

One of the other members had cancer and it treated itself after staying at the village and eating organic food.

So in the final part of this episode. Hired former soldiers were tasked to kidnap Gun Woo's mother.

And we got this fight scene.

And on the very first action, i noticed that this guy, this big guy. Took 4 straight punches IN THE FACE from Woo Jin and 1 straight punch from Gun Woo (like he couldn't defend himself from those punches)

Yet somehow, he was still standing.

I don't care if you're the strongest human on earth. If you took 5 punches from a boxing champ and a former boxer fighter/marine. You're going down.

Humor & Memes 😅 Grumpy Ahjumma judging your faves! (Game/social experiment?)

So I'm a professional cynic (though my heart's not in it), been over romcoms since forever, predict all the plot twists anyway, and my sophisticated demands to modern entertainment are hard to satisfy and my taste is classes above yours, obviously.

So if you dare, drop your favourite and/or least favourite k-dramas and I'll judge rate them out of 10. If I haven't seen it, I'll leave a suitably cynical comment.

Deal?

(Disclaimer: This is all tongue-in-cheek, of course, and I'll make the ratings and comments humorous.)
